Mayor keen on London Grand Prix

Recommended 6 times

Bernie Ecclestone's desire to host a Grand Prix in London has been met with positivity from Boris Johnson

The Mayor of London has given his conditional support to proposals from Bernie Ecclestone to host a Grand Prix race in central London.

The Formula One boss has reportedly long been interested in bringing the sport to the UK's capital and is now set to unveil plans for a 3.2-mile route that would involve cars starting at the Mall and passing Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.

Boris Johnson did raise reservations about noise and air pollution but certainly appeared to amenable to the prospect of holding such an event in London as he discussed the matter at the launch of a new cable car system across the River Thames.

"I am always interested in projects that attract jobs and bring growth," he said.

"The question of air quality and noise impact will have to be looked at. I am broadly positive, providing we can satisfy the air quality and noise issues."

If rumours are to be believed, then a London Grand Prix could cost around ?35 million to stage with cars reaching a top speed of around 180mph. The Mayor insisted he would see if there was "a really good economic case" for it to go ahead.

Erik's Personal Finance Challenge! | Life Half Crunched

We all have things that we like to spend our hard earned money on. Some people like to gamble, some buy clothes, and some enjoy collecting things. With online shopping meccas such as Amazon and the ever addicting Ebay, the temptation to splurge is unavoidable. I personally enjoy treasure hunting at antique stores. You can find me on any given day, usually when I get off of work after the midnight shift, searching for remnants of the past. Unfortunately, these habitual rituals lead to emotional spending.

Emotional spending is like an addiction. We spend not for necessity, but rather for the fulfilled feeling that we experience on getting the ?best deal? or finding something on pure impulse that we ?think? we need. With that being said, I offer a solution. My challenge to you comes in a simple five day exercise. For five days, simply follow these steps and at the end of the exercise, you may be surprised that some of the best things in life are truly free!

?

Day 1

I want you to take this day and prepare yourself for the next five days by reviewing the steps you will need to follow. This is an important step in keeping you focused.

Day 2

Stock up at the local warehouse or grocery store! Yes, you need to spend money to save money. Make a detailed list of groceries that will last you the whole week. I can?t remember all the money I wasted on take-out food or on delivered pizza only because I had nothing to prepare for dinner.

Day 3

Keep a minimal amount of cash on your person. I find that the more cash I carry, the more cash I don?t have at the end of the day. Money literally vanishes from my pocket and ends up being used on small ticket items: one dollar here, three dollars there? You get the picture.

Day 4

Reduce the amount of time you spend aimlessly searching the web. Web surfing is the equivalent to channel surfing after midnight! You are bombarded with ads so flashy and alluring that you become hypnotized into buying anything offered! The advertisers are so crafty that if you were searching for dream vacation ideas, you will have seemingly magical pop-up ads that solicit cruise lines, airlines, and all inclusive resorts. You are no match for the technology used by advertisers.

Day 5

Finally, you reached your last day. Take this day and get outside! It doesn?t matter if it is fall, winter, spring, or summer. Go outside and enjoy the scenery. Take a walk, ride a bike, or just simply observe what?s around you. This simple exercise will not only get you out of the house, and away from the temptation of T.V. and the internet, it will also provide you with exercise, a clear mind, and maybe even allow you to get to know your neighbors a little better.

?

After your five day exercise is complete, reflect on the habits that you refrained from participating in. Do you feel any better? Do you have some extra cash lying around? More importantly did you learn a little more about yourself? Repeat this exercise often, and have an open mind to new ways of doing things. You never know, you may start to replace some old habits along the way!

Seafood Plant Evacuated After Military Shell Found

MILFORD, Del. (AP) ? Authorities are investigating the discovery of a military explosive that prompted the evacuation of a Delaware seafood plant.

The device was discovered Friday morning at the Sea Watch International plant. Some employees were evaluated at a hospital as a precaution, but a Seawatch official said none was sickened

Seawatch chief financial officer Jerry Gordon also said it did not appear that the device contained mustard gas.

But an explosive ordnance disposal unit from Dover Air Force Base responded to the scene, and military officials said the round tested positive for a chemical agent, which Army technical experts will work to identify.

Several years ago, scores of unexploded shells found mixed in with crushed clamshells used to pave driveways and parking lots in
Delaware and Maryland?s Eastern Shore were traced to loads of clams dredged from the ocean floor and delivered to the Milford plant.

A detailed technical introduction to the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free-electron Laser (SACLA) appeared online in Nature Photonics. The attention on the world's second XFEL facility comes in response to its record-breaking size and performance: SACLA boasts the shortest wavelength in the world (0.63 Angstroms), an extremely broad wavelength range (0.63 - 3 Angstroms) and a very high peak output of 10 GW. SACLA achieves this performance despite having an overall length of only 700 meters, a fraction of the 2 - 4 km taken up by XFEL facilities in the United States and Europe.

The unique design and original Japanese technologies have enabled SACLA's extremely compact size and its remarkable performance. SACLA is certain to set the standard for XFEL design at new facilities under contemplation across the world.

In March, SACLA was made for use by researchers from within and outside of Japan. The SACLA team continues to work to improve the facility's performance, aiming in the medium-term future to realize the formation of a single-mode laser, and in the longer-term future to develop even more compact XFEL.

Ernst: Terra Ceia citrus grower is final piece of Old Florida

Published: Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 2:48 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 2:48 p.m.

The Citrus Place has been going out of business for years. Or so the stories go. They're not hard to believe.

Old Florida has been disappearing. And the Citrus Place in Terra Ceia at the foot of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is as Old Florida as it gets. The roadside business on U.S. 19 has been selling home-grown and home-squeezed citrus for 37 years.

Its owner, Ben Tillett, 81, was born in the house behind the store and lived there most of his life.

He thought he was getting out of the business in 2005. As the real estate market hummed, land around him was going for $100,000 an acre. Tillet was ready to cash in. He had a serious buyer. Someone was going to open a storage complex for boats and motor homes. That deal fell through, although he has sold his childhood home, and he and his wife, Vera, have moved to a newer house nearby.

This week, as howling winds closed the Skyway bridge, the store was open as usual. Well, maybe not quite as usual. This is the first year it's stayed open past May. The Tilletts are trying something different, selling frozen juice they've stored in six freezers.

"You'd be surprised how business drops off when the tourists leave. It's getting hard to show a profit," Ben says. "What we're attempting to do now is something to stay alive."

Although his father farmed, Tillett never really intended to get into citrus. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, got a business degree from Florida State in 1958, worked for an oil company in Miami for a year, then returned home and got a job teaching English at Manatee County High School.

He was a tough teacher, big on grammar and spelling. He quit in 1979, partly because he felt the administration cared more about athletics than academics.

And, the U-pick grapefruit sideline business he had started a few years earlier had also picked up. People seemed to like the local oranges and grapefruits, which, Tillett claims, have higher sugar content and thinner skins than fruit from Florida's interior.

Tillett was more than a retailer. He also managed a number of citrus groves in the area in addition to his own. He'd handle the fertilizing, watering and the spraying for insects and weeds, then split the profits with the owners. The six or seven groves under his care each year comprised 50 to 400 trees.

The arrangement kept alive Terra Ceia's agricultural tradition, which has now all but vanished as land prices have favored residential use. Tillett still oversees two groves, but they're in Parrish and Ruskin.

The uncertainty of supply has undercut what used to be a profitable shipping business. At one time, Tillett sent out as many as 4,000 boxes of fruit a season through an association in Orlando. "We had to give up gift fruit shipping," he says. "We had to know what we were going to have. I was going 100 miles, trying to find fruit."

It's hard to pin down cause and effect for the decline of citrus in Florida. Rising land prices, diseases such as canker and greening, government regulations to combat canker and greening, permit fees, the cost of testing, the unavailability of labor and a change in consumer habits have all played a role.

And it's the little guys who get hurt the worst. They don't have the depth and breadth of business to absorb the skyrocketing overhead.

The Tillets, joined by their son, Sid, are trying. Over the years they've added ice cream, specialty cheeses from Ohio and pecans from Georgia to their inventory. They sell arts and crafts, including some of Vera's knitting. This year, they introduced homemade soups and sandwiches.

In December, they started selling clams, raised from seeds germinated in a laboratory on Terra Ceia. "I was very skeptical at first," Tillett says. "They're small, but they're tender, and they're selling like you wouldn't believe."

The times change, surely enough. Terra Ceia's truck farms and citrus groves and tomato packing houses and gladiolus growers are gone. But it's nice, every once in a while, to get a glimpse of how things used to be and to cheer for folks like the Tilletts, who bridge the gap.

Australian government spends big money on unified communications

The use of video conferencing and other telecommunications systems to improve productivity in businesses and institutions has been widely reported over the past handful of years, and not least of all right here on our blog. One of the most interesting areas of focus where unified communications can make a difference is in government ? some of the most important practices are run by nations? governments, so it would stand to reason that improving upon these practices and services with more sophisticated and streamlined technology would be a positive move. Recently, Future Gov Magazine reported that the Australian government has spent $475 million USD on unified communications. Reporter Shahida Sweeney explains how the specific body of government involved in the spending, the Department of Human Services, oversees many functions:

?As Australia?s lead citizen service delivery agency, the Department of Human Services provides strategic policy advice to the Australian?Government.

This department also manages services and payments nationally, including Medicare, Centrelink, and Child Support. Combined, these services reach thousands of Australians?nationally.?

The integration of more connected and widely available communications tools will allow the government to connect more readily with its citizens to handle specific issues regarding any and all of these services. Anything that can be done to speed up practices in government will be a good thing, because they have plenty on their plate every day as it is.

The money should pay for itself in a reasonable period of time, too. Investing in unified communications means saving money otherwise spent on travel. With emote communications capabilities, including video conferencing, the Australian government should be able to getmore things done with less gas usage and so on.

This year the FASEB MARC Program is sponsoring summer research experiences for 48 undergraduate students at 12 SROP host institutions for a total of $182,431. Thirty-six SROP mentors representing 12 FASEB member societies will be providing summer research experiences for the students over a ten-to-twelve-week period.

The FASEB MARC Program is funded by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health. A primary goal of the MARC Program is to increase the number and competitiveness of underrepresented minorities engaged in biomedical and behavioral research.

Flu immunity is affected by how many viruses actually cause the infection

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Not only does the type of flu virus affect a patient's outcome, but a new research report appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that the number of viruses involved in the initial infection may be important too. Scientists from Canada found that when mice were infected by relatively high concentrations of the flu virus, they not only developed immunity against the virus that infected them, but this also promoted the generation of a type of immune cell in the lungs poised to rapidly react against infections with other strains of the flu, as well. Mice that were infected with a relatively low concentration of the virus developed weaker immunity against the strain that infected them, did not build up this crucial population of immune cells in the lungs, and showed only delayed immunity toward other flu strains. This discovery could pave the way for new prophylactic strategies to fight flu infections and provides a novel basis for vaccine design.

"Hopefully, the findings of our study will help to develop better vaccine preparations that will be more effective in inducing protective cellular immunity to fight against infectious pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi," said Martin V. Richter, Ph.D., the lead researcher involved in the work from the Department of Medicine at the Universit? de Sherbrooke and Centre de Recherche Clinique ?tienne-Le Bel in Qu?bec, Canada.

To make this discovery, scientists infected two groups of mice with two different infectious doses of influenza A (H3N2) and analyzed several aspects of inflammation and immunity during the initial infection as well as during reinfection with a different strain of virus. The first group was infected with a low dose of the virus whereas the second group was infected with a high dose of the same virus. Mice infected with the high dose showed increased morbidity, a greater degree of lung inflammation, but also a greater recruitment of influenza-specific immune cells (CD8+ T cells) into their lungs, and a better generation of long-lived respiratory CD8+ T cells called memory CD8+ T cells. In contrast, the mice infected with the low dose of virus suffered less from primary infection but all of the immune responses were induced to lower levels. Consequently, reinfection of mice, 60 days after primary infection, revealed that mice previously infected with a higher dose showed increased protection due to greater magnitude of the memory CD8+ T cell pool present in their lungs before reinfection. This is the first demonstration that the initial infectious dose has an important impact on the generation of specific types of immune memory cells and on the degree of immune protection against reinfection.

"Recent experience with emerging and mutating strains of influenza virus highlight how very few changes in this virus could lead to a catastrophic flu crisis," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "While considerable efforts have been invested in predicting new emerging flu strains for our yearly vaccines, it is impossible to prepare for every possible way the flu can mutate. This new research shows that it may be possible to enhance current vaccines to offer broader protection against different flu strains, known and unknown."

Fundraiser to honour selfless Calgary brain cancer research advocate

There are everyday headaches, then there are excruciatingly painful headaches that make working, walking and even thinking nearly impossible chores.

It was the latter sort of pain that sent Calgarian Alyson Woloshyn to hospital three years ago to find out what was causing the aches in her head.

The diagnosis was grim.

In the spring of 2009, Woloshyn, 32, was diagnosed with one of the most deadly forms of cancer, called glioblastoma.

The aggressive brain cancer usually strikes middle-aged men.

Woloshyn, who worked in client services at the University of Calgary, was young, fit and female ? and, according to the odds, had little more than a year to live.

?When the prognosis is 12 to 18 months, that?s a tough, tough thing to deal with,? said Woloshyn?s longtime partner, Jared Long.

?Alyson was really empowered. There were things she could control and things she couldn?t. She certainly turned her focus onto the things she could control.?

One of those things, it turns out, was advocating for brain cancer research.

Indeed, Woloshyn?s enthusiasm for helping others diagnosed with brain cancer became her trademark as she struggled with the deadly disease.

Since her May 2009 diagnosis, the Calgary woman raised more than $50,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Woloshyn died on May 27.

Those who knew her, however, are determined her legacy will live on.

To that end, a research fellowship now carries her name.

According to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the Alyson Woloshyn Cancer Research Clinical Fellowship is set to be awarded to a top-ranking candidate to carry out research related to brain cancer. The fellowship is intended to allow the researcher to work in Alberta for up to three years.

Alberta Cancer Foundation?s Darren Neuberger, who counted Woloshyn as a friend, said the tribute is fitting.

Neuberger first met Woloshyn in 2009 following a U of C medical student?s club speech on young adult cancer, soon after her first brain surgery.

?I remember when I walked away, thinking, ?Wow, this girl is crazy. She?s essentially been given the worst diagnosis you can hear as far as brain cancer. She was so bubbly, she was so enthusiastic.?

Oncologist Dr. Jacob Easaw, head of the brain cancer program at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, treated Woloshyn as she went through surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy.

?The problem with a brain tumour is there?s nowhere for it to grow. The skull is fixed, it can?t expand,? said Easaw.

The brain pressure causes the severe headaches, but it can also lead to a life-threatening situation called coning, when the brain is forced even further down.

While the median age for a glioblastoma multiforme ? the most aggressive form of brain tumour ? is about 55 in Calgary, Easaw said he?s starting to see younger and younger patients.

?We?re starting to see this occurring more and more frequently in younger patients and we don?t know why.

?The science really hasn?t caught up.?

The puzzling trend is just one of the many questions researchers are tackling, he said.

?What made Alyson different and unique, and really special, was the fact she really had a focus on, ?How can I help other people?? ? said Easaw.

The fellowship in her name will help train new brain cancer doctors, who will, in turn, treat other patients, he added.

Friends have organized a Woloshyn Fellowship fundraiser event, set for Thursday at 5 p.m. at Soho Bar and Grill.

The evening is being billed as a pre-Stampede event, said friend Cathy Parker, who noted Woloshyn, a Stampede volunteer, was a big fan of the 10-day show.

Even though Woloshyn knew her own prognosis wasn?t great, she wanted to do all she could to ensure others who receive the same diagnosis face a better chance.

?When Alyson was given a terminal diagnosis, she said, ?What can I do to leave a legacy and leave the world a better place for the ones I leave behind? To me, that?s so selfless,? Parker said.

More information is available by contacting woloshynfellowship@gmail.com or visiting albertacancer.ca/woloshynfellowshipfundraiser.

Galaxy S III supply crunch may have cost Samsung millions in sales

Samsung?s flagship smartphone for 2012, the Galaxy S III, launched in the United States earlier this month and while the sleek new smartphone has seemingly been well received, supply issues could have a serious impact on launch-month sales. According to Reuters, a manufacturing glitch ahead of the European Galaxy S III launch and supply constraints ahead of the smartphone?s U.S. launch could end up costing Samsung 2 million unit sales or more in just one month.

?Samsung might have been caught off guard by the demand, not because they did not believe in their own products, but because they might have over-estimated the competition,? Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi told Reuters. ?In other words, aside from the iPhone and HTC?s One X there?s not much out there at the moment, which would have certainly helped Samsung.?

Samsung will seemingly rebound quickly from its Galaxy S III launch debacle, however ? the company announced on Monday that it expects to sell 10 million Galaxy S III handsets by the end of July. BGR reviewed the Galaxy S III earlier this month and while we found it to be a terrific smartphone, we didn?t think it was a game-changer like the Galaxy S II smartphone was in 2011.
