Here?s the survey data from SEMPO (the exact question was ?Do you or your primary search engine marketing service provider use a special technology solution with features such as ?bid management?, ?campaign management?, ?portfolio management? and ?dynamic optimization? for paid search campaigns??):
As you can see, there?s been a big rise in the number of companies that use a proprietary in-house solution (17% this year compared to just 4% last year) as well as those that license a third-party tool to use in-house, up to 22% in 2012 from 12% in 2011. A full 62% (almost 2 in 3) of companies now use some kind of software to help them manage PPC, whether it?s a proprietary or third-party solution and whether they manage it in-house or use an SEM service provider.

The SEMPO report doesn?t delve into why this shift is happening, but here are some possible explanations for the shift:
- AdWords is getting more complicated ? AdWords is constantly launching new features (such as Shared Budgets) or changing the way existing features work (take the ad rotation setting changes from a few months back). Some advertisers may feel they can?t keep up and are falling behind.
- People are advertising on multiple platforms ? Almost all companies using PPC advertising (97% of them!) run campaigns on Google AdWords, but more than half use Bing/Yahoo (65%) ?and Facebook advertising (56%) as well.
- The PPC software industry is coming into its own ? Search marketing is still a young industry. The available solutions are improving by leaps and bounds, and advertisers are beginning to realize that it?s a smart investment that delivers ROI ? and/or PPC vendors are getting better at convincing advertisers that software is worth the investment! There are also more and better solutions targeting small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), as opposed to just enterprise-level big spenders.
- Marketing departments are increasingly feeling the pinch ? With the economy still not fully recovered, it may be that fewer marketers are being held responsible for a larger number of roles. If, for example, a single search marketer is handling both SEO and PPC, they may need advanced tools that offer automation to get more done in less time.

October (which is just a few days away) is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Those of you who follow me already know my story; my mother and father both had breast cancer and I had a preventive mastectomy due to my own breast disease. While that's a sobering story, remarkable strides have been made in the fight. Breast cancer remains one of the most treatable forms of cancer with a very good rate of survival, if?it's caught early. That means being educated and proactive.
So here are five things totally within your power to do during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
1.? Start doing breast self-exams. You can go here for information on how to do your self exams.? Put them on your calendar so that you remember to do them once a month. Sometimes it's confusing and you might not be sure exactly what you are feeling for. If you need help, see your doctor.
2. Know when to get mammogram.? The National Cancer Institute recommends having a baseline mammogram at age 40 but if you have a family history of breast cancer, you may need to begin routine screening earlier. Again, talk to your doctor.
3. Know your family history. No one in your family has had breast cancer? Whew, so you're off the hook? Not so fast. The number one?risk factor for developing the disease is being a woman who is getting older. Yep, that's. it. Your risk increases if you have a family history but not having one does not make you immune.?
4. Talk to your teen. The last time I took my teen daughter to the pediatrician, she reminded me that I need to talk to Casey about breast cancer. You'd think I'd know that, given my own story, but even I needed to be reminded. Everyone needs to know what their breasts normally feel like, and discuss with their doctor anything they're unsure of.
5. Get involved. Spread the word about breast cancer. Take to Twitter, Facebook, or other social media and, at the very least, make sure your friends are aware that their chances of being diagnosed are 1 in 8. Encourage friends to check their family history, run, or take some other step toward your own good health!
Breast cancer does not mean a death sentence. Remember, early detection saves lives.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone inflation accelerated in September as energy costs soared but core prices stayed low, likely leaving the European Central Bank on track to cut interest rates soon.
Consumer prices in the 17 countries sharing the euro rose 2.7 percent year-on-year, the European Union's statistics office Eurostat said on Friday in a first estimate that marked a rise from 2.6 percent in August.
Markets had expected inflation to ease to 2.5 percent.
Energy prices jumped 9.2 percent after a 8.9 percent rise the previous month.
Core inflation, excluding both energy and unprocessed foods, fell to its lowest level in a year of 1.7 percent in August, the latest month for which the data has been published.
Together with recent data indicating that the euro zone economy entered a recession in the third quarter, Friday's inflation reading kept intact expectations that the ECB will not wait long before delivering a growth-boosting rate cut.
"It seems highly likely that the ECB will take interest rates down from 0.75 percent to 0.50 percent in the fourth quarter," said Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight.
"While the ECB could act as soon as its October meeting next Thursday, we lean towards the view that they will probably hold off to November."
Just 14 of 73 economists polled by Reuters this week expect the ECB to cut rates when it meets next Thursday but a majority expect the bank to have lopped off 25 basis points by the end of the year.
The ECB kept its main interest rate unchanged at a record low of 0.75 percent at its meeting earlier this month, taking another policy-easing route by agreeing to launch a new and potentially unlimited bond-buying program.
MUTED PRICE PRESSURES
Inflation fell steadily from 3 percent in November 2011 to stabilize at 2.4 percent in May, June and July, as the euro zone economy slowed sharply as a result of the sovereign debt crisis.
But it rose again for the first time in 11 months in August due to higher fuel and transport costs.
The ECB's target is to keep inflation below, but close to 2 percent, a rate it is not expected to drop back to for some time, though price pressures should ease further as the economy continues to struggle.
"Euro zone inflation should resume its downward trend before long as previous sharp increases in energy and food prices cease to boost the annual rate," said Martin Van Vliet, economist at ING bank.
"But with commodity prices remaining high and volatile, and further VAT hikes in the pipeline (e.g. in the Netherlands next month and in Finland in January), it is probably going to be a very gradual descent," he said.
Headline inflation might stay above 2 percent well into next year.
"The bottom line, however, is that underlying inflation pressures remain muted in most parts of the euro zone economy. This gives the ECB scope to ease monetary policy further," he said.
In September, Eurostat for the first time provided year-on-year prices changes in the index's components - food, alcohol and tobacco, energy, non-energy industrial goods and services.
It publishes a more detailed breakdown for September as well as monthly inflation figures on October 16.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is practicing for his first debate with Republican Mitt Romney before spending the rest of Friday fundraising in Washington.
Obama is at Democratic National Committee headquarters for his latest prep session for Wednesday's debate in Denver.
The president was then holding three fundraising events.
The first was at the Capital Hilton, with about 700 guests. Ticket prices began at $250 per person.
Obama was then speaking to about 90 people at the home of Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat. Tickets cost $20,000 per person.
The final fundraiser, back at the Hilton, was for 200 people. Tickets for that event start at $2,500 a person.
The money will go to Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state Democratic parties.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Soft horns and a tinkling piano form the backbone of "Fifty Degrees North, Four Degrees West," a jazz number with two interesting twists: it has no composer and no actual musicians. Unless you count bacteria and other tiny microbes, that is.
The song is the brainchild of Peter Larsen, a biologist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Larsen, it turns out, has no musical training at all; his interests run less towards the blues and more towards blue-green algae.
When faced with an avalanche of microbial data collected from samples taken from the western English Channel, Larsen recognized he needed a way to make sense of it all. "Thinking of interesting ways to highlight interactions within data is part of my daily job," he said. "I am always trying to find new ways to visualize those relationships in ways so that someone can make relevant biological conclusions."

In the case of the western English Channel data, however, Larsen decided that a visual representation of the data would not be as effective as one he could hear.
"There are certain parameters like sunlight, temperature or the concentration of phosphorus in the water that give a kind of structure to the data and determine the microbial populations," he said. "This structure provides us with an intuitive way to use music to describe a wide range of natural phenomena."
A colleague of Larsen's suggested that classical music could effectively represent the data, but Larsen wanted any patterns inherent in the information to emerge naturally and not to be imposed from without.
"For something as structured as classical music, there's an insufficient amount of structure that you can infer without having to tweak the result to fit what you perceive it should sound like," Larsen said. "We didn't want to do that."
While this is not the first attempt to "sonify" data, it is one of the more mellifluous examples of the genre. "We were astounded by just how musical it sounded," Larsen said. "A large majority of attempts to converting linear data into sound succeed, but they really don't obey the dictates of music -- meter, tempo, harmony. To see these things in natural phenomena and to describe them was a wonderful surprise."
According to Larsen, the musicality of the data is not limited to the organisms in the English Channel. In another set of analysis, he and his colleagues used a similar methodology to look at the relationship between a plant and a fungus.
"We expect to see the same intuitive patterns recurring in different environments," he said. "Sometimes, it can sound a little avant-garde, but it's not random because it reflects very real phenomena."

Vernon Parker, the black Republican congressional candidate in Arizona viewed as a rising star within the GOP, has been tapped by House Speaker John Boehner to give the weekly Republican address this weekend.
?Vernon Parker is an independent thinker and a rising star in the Republican Party who is committed to listening to the people of Arizona and restoring the American Dream,? Boehner said in a written statement.
Parker, the former mayor and town council member who served in President George H.W. Bush?s administration, is running for Arizona?s new 9th Congressional District.
He was raised by his grandmother in an underprivileged neighborhood, according to a biography from the speaker?s office.
?Growing up in a tough neighborhood with gangs, guns and violence, I told myself if I ever got out, I?d work hard to make sure others have an easier shot to succeed and achieve the American Dream,? Parker said.

At U.N., Rwanda defiantly rejects claims of Congo rebel support
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Rwanda defiantly denied claims at the United Nations on Thursday that it was aiding rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo and rejected U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon's summary of a meeting on the crisis, diplomats said.
According to Ban, most states attending a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Joseph Kigali "condemned all forms of external support" to the rebels.
Kagame said after the meeting that Rwanda rejected allegations it was supporting the M23 rebels and said that "solving the crisis will be impossible if the international community continues to define the issue erroneously."
M23 rebels, who have ties to a warlord wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, Bosco Ntaganda, have been fighting government soldiers in eastern Congo's North Kivu province since April. Some 320,000 civilians have been displaced.
"Most participants strongly condemned all forms of external support to the M23 and other negative forces in the DRC, and demanded the immediate and permanent cessation of such support," according to the meeting summary. "Some participants cautioned that those supporting the M23 could also be held accountable."
"They stressed ... the urgency of constructive engagement and dialogue between the DRC and Rwanda," it said.
Despite Rwanda's denials, a senior U.N. diplomat has said that privately Kigali was "a bit embarrassed, to say the least, and this could be one of the reasons behind the lull (in fighting) in the Kivu." He said if Rwanda withdrew support then the M23 group, numbering about 1,500, "could be subdued."
The DRC said last month it had asked the U.N. Security Council to place sanctions on Rwanda's defense minister and two top military officials for backing the rebellion.
A U.N. experts' report has accused Rwandan Defense Minister James Kaberebe, chief of defense staff Charles Kayonga, and General Jacques Nziza, a military adviser to President Paul Kagame, of being "in constant contact with M23."
"There can be no possible justification for such support, whether in terms of military hardware, or strategic advice. It must stop," Britain's Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, told the U.N. summit. "And there can be no impunity for those who violate human rights. They must be brought to justice."
INTERNATIONAL FORCE?
France said it would support sanctions against M23 and warned neighboring states against supporting the group.
"The M23 is benefiting from external support, including from neighboring DRC states," said French Minister for the Francophone countries Yamina Benguigui. "Nothing can justify the support of an armed rebellion led by war criminals. All support of M23, whatever it is, must stop."
As uneasy neighbors, Congo and Rwanda have gone to war against each other in the past. Rwanda has backed armed movements in the DRC during the past two decades, citing a need to tackle Rwandan rebels operating out of Congo's eastern hills.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met jointly with Kagame and Kabila on Monday in New York and pressed them to resolve the conflict.
In July the United States withdrew some $200,000 in military aid for Rwanda, Washington's first direct punitive action against the Rwandans over the crisis. Several other western European nations also have cut or suspended aid.
The United Nations said it was working with east and central African states on their proposal for a neutral force to tackle the M23 and other armed groups in eastern Congo.
"It is something that generates interest, but we are short of a real concept of operations - who would be in, who would do what, who would pay - and this is why more work needs to be done," said U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous after the meeting.
"We are already working (with them) to flesh out the concept because at the end of the day it will be submitted to the Security Council and the Security Council will want very precise explanations as to what it is all about," he said.
A resolution mandating military intervention in the DRC would have to be approved by the 15-member Security Council.
"Before endorsing any such support, we and the U.N. Security Council will want to understand the intended role and scope of the force," said Britain's Simmonds. Britain, the United States, France, China and Russia are veto-wielding council members.
A U.N. mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, has more than 17,000 troops, but the force is stretched thin across a nation the size of Western Europe and struggles to fulfill its current mandate of protecting civilians.
U.N. helicopter gunships frequently back up outgunned government forces, but even that firepower failed to prevent rebels from taking several towns in July. The U.N. force would work with any neutral force, but could not launch operations.

Spanish magazine publishes Mohammad cartoon
MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish political satire magazine El Jueves has published a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad on its cover, soon after violent protests rocked the Muslim world over a U.S. film and French caricatures deemed insulting to Islam.
El Jueves' latest edition, which hit Spanish newsstands on Wednesday, shows several Muslims in a police lineup under the title "But...does anyone know what Mohammad looks like?"
Any depiction of the prophet is considered blasphemous by Muslims but the issue has also caused a debate in the West about censorship and freedom of speech.
The magazine declined to comment to Reuters on Thursday on the motives for the publication.
But in comments to the Huffington Post, editor Mayte Quilez said it was a decision to take a humorous position on a contentious issue.
"If you can't depict Mohammad, how do you know it is him in the cartoons?" she asked.
Last week, French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad soon after protests against a film made in the United States provoked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Egypt, Libya and other countries.
The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11, and 15 people were killed in protests in Pakistan last Friday.
The Spanish Embassy on Wednesday sent a message to its citizens in Egypt asking for caution in the event of any backlash from the El Jueves cartoon but has not said whether it will step up security in other Arab countries.
"We're still analysing what steps to take," a foreign ministry source said.

In the paper, they describe a method of approximating the outline of a cat or other object using the Julia sets of polynomials.
What?s a Julia set? Let?s start with an example. Consider the polynomial z2, where z is the complex variable x+iy. To determine the Julia set, we iterate the polynomial, meaning we plug in a number for z, get an answer, and plug that answer back in to the original polynomial. If we start with the number z=2, we get the sequence of numbers 4, 16, 256 and so on. This sequence grows boundlessly as we keep iterating. But if we start with the number 1/2, we get the sequence 1/4, 1/16, 1/256 and so on, getting closer and closer to 0.
In this way, we can divide the universe of possibilities for z into two camps: those that march off to infinity, and those that stay bounded. The filled Julia set of a polynomial is the set of values whose iterates stay bounded?in our example, 1/2 or 3/4 or 999/1000.
At the number 1, something changes. Anything less than one stays bounded, while anything greater than 1 rises to infinity. The number 1 is on the boundary of the filled Julia set. The boundary of any filled Julia set is the Julia set.
Yet let?s remember that z can be any complex number, formed from a real part and an imaginary part: x+iy. These complex numbers can be plotted on an ordinary graph, with the real part marked along the x axis and the imaginary part on the y axis. For our z2 example, then, the Julia set isn?t just the number 1?it?s a circle in the complex plane with a radius of one.
Lindsey and Thurston?s work deals with finding the polynomials whose Julia sets aren?t just boring old circles. They want to find the polynomials (of the general form anzn +an-1zn-1+?+a1z+a0) whose Julia sets form complex outlines?the shadow of a cat, perhaps. (The number n, the largest exponent of z, is called the degree of the polynomial. Our example of z2 had a degree of two.)
Julia sets for polynomials of degree two are well-understood, although they?re often fractals rather than simple shapes such as circles. The story gets a lot more complicated as the degree increases because higher-degree polynomials are difficult to factor. (The much-maligned quadratic formula?the reason why we can easily discern the roots of degree two polynomials?is our friend!) A little bit is known about the possible shapes for Julia sets of degree 3 and 4 polynomials, but the shapes of the Julia sets of arbitrary polynomials are not yet understood.
Lindsey is a graduate student in mathematics at Cornell University. Her advisor is John Smillie, but Thurston was an unofficial second advisor, and it was his idea to start this research project. ?I was sitting in his house, and he was staring off into space and asked, ?I wonder if Julia sets can be made into shapes,?? she says. Thurston had been working on understanding the Mandelbrot set better, and looking at the shapes of Julia sets was a related pursuit. The Mandelbrot set, one of the most famous fractals, is closely related to Julia sets of degree two polynomials: imagine the polynomial?z2+c, where c can be any complex number. The number c is in the Mandelbrot set if 0 is in the filled Julia set of z2+c.
In their paper Lindsey and Thurston prove that for any simple closed curve in the complex plane?no matter how complicated?there is a polynomial whose Julia set is arbitrarily close to the outline of the curve. (A curve is called simple if it never intersects itself. You can think of simple closed curves as any way you can arrange a rubber band on a table without picking up any part of it.) In other words, says Lindsey, ?if you have any shape that doesn?t have holes or multiple pieces, it?s just one blob, we can make a Julia set that looks very close to that.? The cat picture at the top of this blog post is an approximation of the outline of a cat by the Julia set of a polynomial with degree 301.

Their work goes further: later in the paper, they show that you can approximate a pair of non-overlapping simple closed curves?imagine the inner and outer ring of a bulls-eye?by finding the polynomials for each curve and then combining them in a particular way. To illustrate, they approximated the shape of the famous Mandelbrot set as the outside curve and a heart as the inside curve.
Yet their work leaves a lot of open questions. ?Can you make Julia sets that have more than one hole, or two separate pieces, each with holes, things like that,? says Lindsey. In concrete cat terms, we can generate no-eyed cats and winking cats, but more research is needed to approximate cats with two open eyes or to draw multiple cats at once.
The adorable cat, butterfly and heart illustrations belie the depth of the mathematical connections in the paper. Not merely a recipe for cute pictures, the paper is an extension of Thurston and Dennis Sullivan?s work connecting the behavior of iterations of rational functions in the complex plane to advanced topics in geometry. Lindsey says, ?Both fields are looking at the long-term dynamics of something. As time goes to infinity, what happens??
Lindsey and Thurston?s paper is not the use of cat pictures to illustrate mathematics. Arnold?s cat map is a linear transformation applied over and over to a picture of a cat. The picture seems to get hopelessly stretched and jumbled up, but eventually Whiskers stares back at you, as good as new. Why cats? That is a question for psychology, not mathematics. But Lindsey says that her cat Magellan was the inspiration for the first picture in the paper. ?Magellan spends a lot of time sitting on my papers when I?m trying to do math, so it felt appropriate.?

Desalination no panacea for California water woes.
MARINA, Calif. (AP) ? In the Central California coastal town of Marina, a $7 million desalination plant that can turn salty ocean waves into fresh drinking water sits idle behind rusty, locked doors, shuttered by water officials because rising energy costs made the plant too expensive.
Far to the north in well-heeled Marin County, plans were scrapped for a desalination facility despite two decades of planning and millions of dollars spent on a pilot plant.
Squeezing salt from the ocean to make clean drinking water is a worldwide phenomenon that has been embraced in thirsty California, with its cycles of drought and growing population. There are currently 17 desalination proposals in the state, concentrated along the Pacific where people are plentiful and fresh water is not.
But many projects have been stymied by skyrocketing construction costs, huge energy requirements for running plants, regulatory delays and legal challenges over environmental impacts on marine life. Only one small plant along Monterey Bay is pumping out any drinking water.
From Marin County to San Diego, some water districts are asking themselves: How much are we willing to pay for this new water?
"We found that our demand for water had dropped so much since the time we started exploring desalination, we didn't need the water," said Libby Pischel, a spokeswoman for the Marin Municipal Water District. "Right now, conservation costs less than desalination."
Desalination plants can take water from the ocean or drill down and grab the less salty, brackish water from seaside aquifers. Because of their potential impacts to marine life, the California Coastal Commission reviews each project case-by-case.
There was great fanfare in 2009 when the last regulatory hurdle was cleared to build the Western Hemisphere's largest desalination plant in Carlsbad, north of San Diego.
At the time, it was proposed that the $320 million project would suck in 100 million gallons of seawater and be capable of producing 50 million gallons of drinking water a day. It was expected to come online by this year.
Since then, the plant owner, Poseidon Resources LLC, has been negotiating a water purchase agreement and is close to clinching a 30-year deal with the San Diego County Water Authority, a wholesaler to cities and agencies that provide water to 3.1 million people.
The compact is essential for Poseidon to obtain financing to build what has become a $900 million project, which includes the seaside plant and a 10-mile pipeline. The San Diego agency hopes the plant opens in 2016 and anticipates desalination will account for 7 percent of the region's supply in 2020. It estimates the cost is comparable to other new, local sources of drinking water, such as treated toilet water or briny groundwater.
Interest is still high, but "people are realizing that desalination isn't a magic fix to the state's water issues," said coastal commission water expert Tom Luster.
Water can be de-salted in different ways. Poseidon's project will use reverse osmosis. Other plants shoot ocean or brackish water at high pressure through salt-removing membrane filters. Because pumps must be used constantly to move massive amounts of water through filters, these facilities are extremely energy intensive.
Also, in many cases, desalinated water is pricier than importing water the old-fashioned way ? through pipes and tunnels. And it is cheaper to focus on conservation when possible: new technologies like low-flow toilets and stricter zoning laws that require less water-intensive landscaping have helped curb demand in communities throughout the state.
Desalination has been around for years in Saudi Arabia, other Arab Gulf states and Israel, which last year approved the construction of a fifth desalination plant. The hope is that the five plants together will supply 75 percent of the country's drinking water by 2013.
The process also has helped ease thirst in places such as Australia, Spain and Singapore. Experts say it has been slower to catch on in the United States, mainly because companies face tougher rules on where they can build plants and must endure longer environmental reviews. Poseidon, for example, is facing opposition by environmental groups over its proposed plans to build another facility in Huntington Beach. The company has received several permits for the Orange County project, but still needs approval from the coastal commission.
About six miles south of the ghost desalination plant in Marina, the mechanical whir coming from a nondescript cinderblock building in a Sand City industrial park is the only evidence that the state's sole operating municipal desalination plant is at work.
The $14 million facility has the ability to produce up to 600,000 gallons a day of drinkable water for the town of about 340 people. Sand City's plant now produces half that amount each day; a third is used by the city with the rest sent elsewhere in Monterey County.
City leaders hoped to develop the former military town into an artsy, Bohemian beachside destination. With no other possible water options, they turned to desalination. "We're just like Saudi Arabia. There's nowhere else to get water and we want to develop," said Richard Simonitch, the city's civil engineer.
It's not that easy in Monterey Peninsula, where regional water use from development has exceeded its yearly rainfall replenishment and desalination is one of the only options available.
Proposals have been fraught with mistakes, political infighting and scandal, and have cost Monterey area ratepayers tens of millions of dollars.
Earlier this year, state utilities regulators rejected Monterey County's desalination plan, citing problems with environmental review. The plan was also mired in alleged corruption by a county water official, who now faces criminal charges.
Still, desalination will be an important part of the Central Coast's future: the state ordered water suppliers to stop drawing from the Carmel River, its main source of the precious resource, starting in 2017. Even officials in Marina, with its shuttered plant, see a future in which demand will require their current desalination plant to resume operation and are planning another, larger plant to help make up for the expected water loss.
"Water politics in Monterey County is a blood sport," said Jim Heitzman, general manager of the Marina Coast Water District.

TOPANGA, Calif. (AP) ? He is, and likely forever will be, best known as good old Wally Cleaver, the big brother who had to bail out a goofball sibling facing one dilemma after another on the classic TV series "Leave it to Beaver."
For the last dozen years, though, Tony Dow has been carving out a new career, as a sculptor with pieces that have shown at numerous venues, including what is arguably the world's premier art museum ? the Louvre in Paris.
This weekend, more than 30 of Dow's pieces in bronze, steel and wood go on display closer to home at the Debilzan Gallery in Laguna Beach, and they could fetch several thousand dollars each from collectors. But despite his respected reputation as a sculptor, Dow acknowledges there could be as many people at Saturday's opening reception wanting to rub shoulders with the Beav's brother as see his art.
"I think it's hard, especially with the Wally image, to be taken seriously at pretty much anything other than that," he says with a chuckle and a shake of his head.
At 67, Dow has a head of grey hair and lives with his wife, Lauren, in the wooded Southern California arts colony of Topanga Canyon.
His reputation as a sculptor reached a new height four years ago when he had one of his bronze pieces accepted at 2008's Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a 150-year-old art show staged annually at the Louvre.
The modest, soft-spoken Dow is quick to point out that the work ? a distinctive abstract piece titled The Warrior ? was not placed in the museum's permanent collection. And if you went to see the show that year you would not have found it anywhere near Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa."
"But it was a show that was represented by 20-some nations, and the U.S. had 14 pieces there, and there were two sculptors, and I was one of them," Dow says between sips of mango-flavored lemonade as he relaxes on a recent hot, end-of-summer day in the living room of his home.
"So it was a big deal," he adds softly with a shy smile.
Dow doesn't complain that he's still associated with his "Leave it to Beaver" character. He loved playing Wally opposite Jerry Mathers' Beaver from 1957 to 1963, so much so that he reprised the role as an adult for a TV movie and 104 more episodes of "The New Leave it To Beaver" during much of the 1980s.
Even now, he still keeps in touch with all the old gang.
"Jerry, I talked to him just a couple days ago," he says of Mathers.
Dressed in a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, Dow still looks about as fit as the teenage Wally did. But you probably wouldn't recognize him as that character otherwise ? except for an occasional Wally expression or mannerism.
People who stop him while he walks through his picturesque neighborhood are more likely to ask about his dog Bodie, a dreadlocked Bergamasco Shepherd. It's in the hills of his neighborhood that Dow finds much of the rough-hewn, bark-covered wood known as burl that he carves into intricately detailed sculptures.
Dow is often described as an abstract artist, but a tour of his adjacent home studio shows numerous pieces reflecting a pop art and modern style as well.
The artist himself says he's never paid much attention to labels, although he does cite as major influences the great 19th century French sculptor Auguste Rodin and the modern British abstract artist Henry Moore.
"A lot of people say his work is Rodinish, but it's all Tony," says pop artist Stephano Sutherlin, who has staged several exhibitions of Dow's sculptures at his own gallery in Little Rock, Ark.
"He doesn't copy anybody," Sutherlin said by phone from the gallery. "He likes certain people, but it's his own work, and he's very well respected."
Dow, who painted as a youngster, began sculpting more than 30 years ago when he was still acting and directing. He planned to get serious about it when he retired from television.
"The dream was to get a barn space somewhere at the beach and have a studio," he says. But the beach turned out to be too expensive, and he and his wife instead settled in Topanga in the late 1980s.
It was 12 years ago that art took front and center in his life. Dow laughs when he remembers the day when he decided it was time to take the leap from acting to sculpting. He was up for a role in a TV show and a 28-year-old executive asked, "Have you ever done comedy before," recalls Dow, co-star of one of the most classic TV comedies in history.
"Well, I sort of looked at him and I thought, 'Hmmm, maybe it is time for me to retire. Maybe it is time to take the art seriously.'"
