Congo rebels begin slow retreat from Masisi

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? Rebels believed to be backed by Rwanda began retreating from the territory they seized last week and pulled out of the region of Masisi, their military leader said Wednesday, in a sign that international pressure has stemmed the advance of the fighters.

Gen. Sultani Makenga, the military chief for the eight-month-old rebellion known as M23, said his fighters intend to abide by an ultimatum issued by neighboring nations that called for their withdrawal from Goma by Friday. He said he had ordered his fighters to retreat along the southeastern axis from Masisi to Goma, and they will then leave Goma via the northern route to Rutshuru.

But in Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. is waiting for M23 to act and that it is unclear if the rebels definitely plan to withdraw from Goma, a strategic city in eastern Congo's mineral-rich region.

"We do see some movement of M23 troops, but we can't tell whether this is preparatory to a withdrawal or whether it's just sort of a redeployment," she said. "But we are continuing to press and to urge those with influence to press as well."

She said the top U.S. diplomat for Africa, Johnnie Carson, met with Congolese President Joseph Kabila and Prime Minsiter Augustin Matata Ponyo on Wednesday, hopbing to press all parties to support the plan that would see the M23 withdraw from Goma before a longer-term resolution is reached.

M23's military commander made assurances that the rebels will complete a pullback.

"My soldiers began to retreat from Masisi yesterday. We will go via Goma and then after that we will retreat to 20 kilometers (12 miles) past Goma toward Rutshuru," Makenga told The Associated Press. "I think that by Friday we will be able to complete this."

The M23 rebel group is made up of hundreds of soldiers who deserted the Congolese army in April. Since then they have occupied numerous villages and towns in mineral-rich eastern Congo, culminating in the seizing of the crucial, provincial capital of Goma last week. Although they claim to be fighting because the Congolese government has not upheld their end of a March 23, 2009 peace deal, an in-depth report by the United Nations Group of Experts says that M23 is a Rwandan proxy fighting in order to control eastern Congo's lucrative mines.

Congo's government spokesman Lambert Mende, who is based in the country's capital over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) to the west, confirmed that they had received reports of troops pulling out of Masisi.

"Yes, there are reports of movements (of their fighters out of Masisi) but we won't label it a retreat until it's over. They have played this game with us before, where they say they are moving and then find a reason not to," Mende said. "There will be no negotiations with Congo until they are 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside the Goma city limit."

A regional bloc representing nations in the Great Lakes region of Africa had issued a deadline calling for M23 to retreat no later than Friday to 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside of Goma. They issued their ultimatum from Kampala, the capital of neighboring Uganda.

In Goma, there was skepticism over the rebels' claim and confusion, after the leader of M23's political wing insisted that the fighters were not leaving the city of 1 million that is the economic heart of one of Congo's mineral-rich regions.

M23 Vice-Minister of the Interior Theophile Ruremesha told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Congolese President Joseph Kabila's government needs to meet their wide-ranging demands for them to leave the city. "Kabila has to meet our demands if we are to pull out," he said.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with African Union Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to discuss the situation in Congo.

"With regard to the M23 rebel group, there is only one way forward: they must meet their commitments under the Kampala accords to cease their attacks, withdraw from Goma and pull back to the July lines," Clinton told reporters on Wednesday. "Under the Kampala accords, President Kabila's government has agreed to hear and address the grievances of the M23 leaders and we call on leaders and governments from throughout the region to halt and prevent any support to the M23 from their territory."

But both Clinton and Zuma sidestepped the issue of Rwanda's support for the rebels. Asked why Rwanda is not being called out publicly, Zuma said: "Our approach to this matter is that is doesn't help us in finger pointing, we just need a solution. ... For us, what is important is to get a resolution to that problem and the rest will be taken care of because Rwanda is part of the Great Lakes," she said. "Rwanda was there (at the Kampala meeting). It supported the decision so for us, that is what is important."

Clinton ducked the question, adding: "I would fully support the chairperson's comments. We have consistently called on all parties, including Rwanda, to play a positive role in helping bring about a peaceful resolution to this conflict and that includes ending any and all support for M23. Any military assistance from anyone to the M23 is in violation of the UN arms embargo."

In Goma, while some fear the M23, a group which in only eight months has a record of carrying out executions and of forcing children into its ranks, other residents of this lakeside city are afraid of the undisciplined Congolese army that was pushed out of Goma by the rebels on Nov. 20. Dozens of people came out for an anti-Kabila rally.

"I want Kabila to leave because he hasn't helped the people and our country hasn't moved forward since he came to power," said one of the marchers, Augustin Katombo. "I think M23 should stay because we don't want the army to come back."

About 1,500 U.N. peacekeepers were in Goma when M23 attacked on Nov. 20 and government forces fled, but the well-armed U.N. peacekeepers did not intervene, saying they lacked the mandate to do so. One of their main missions is to protect civilians.

A U.N. group of experts said in a detailed report last week that M23 is backed by neighboring Rwanda, which has provided them with battalions of fighters and sophisticated arms, like night vision goggles.

2013 Shaping Up as Great Year For Career Move! | Business 2 ...

While I am certainly not a prophet, the facts strongly suggest?with a high degree of probability?that 2013 could be THE YEAR to seriously consider making your next career move.

How can that possibly be? you might be asking yourself. Isn?t there still considerable turmoil, trouble and economic uncertainty not only in our own country but around the world as well? Well, yes, there is, but there are also a LOT of very positive developments today, and many of these developments are expected to accelerate as we enter 2013. Let?s consider just a few of them:

  • While the news media consistently focus largely on the number of new jobs created each month, rarely if ever do they focus on a fact such as this: So far in 2012, over four million jobs have been filled each and every month of the year. (Coincidentally, millions of other jobs go unfilled month after month, primarily because of a chronic disconnect between the qualifications of potential employees and the qualifications required for the open positions.)
  • After being in the doldrums for a number of years, the housing market has apparently ?bottomed out? and is finally starting to get back on track. Home prices in a number of key geographic areas of the country are starting to creep back up, resulting in a steady reduction in the numbers of homeowners who have been ?under water,? i.e., they owe more on their homes than the fair market value. We are also seeing increases in both the number of building permits and new housing starts. Mortgage rates are at historic lows.
  • We are also seeing an energy boom. Where once we were nearly totally dependent upon foreign oil, it is estimated that, by 2020, the U. S. will produce more oil than Saudi Arabia!
  • Many companies that have been making-do with far fewer employees for the last several years, while fattening up their bottom lines, are really beginning to feel the pressure to add new employees to meet the steadily increasing rate of new business in some key business sectors, e.g., manufacturing, technology, et al. Hiring still remains relatively slow, but unlike just a few years ago, real companies today have real jobs that they need to fill, and provided business continues to grow, the pace can be expected to pick up considerably through 2013.
  • After a number of years of debt deleveraging, i.e., reducing or eliminating the practice of borrowing money to acquire assets, both individual households and businesses are once again, at least tentatively and still cautiously, moving back into the credit markets, thereby providing a much-needed stimulus for the overall economy. And because consumer spending is far and away THE most important driver of the overall economy, this development has HUGE potential!

All of these developments of course have one very important thing in common: They all produce jobs! For example, for every new home built three new jobs are created. As a result of the energy boom, 1.3 million energy related jobs are expected to be created between now and 2020. Because sizeable numbers of households have been cleaning up their own ?balance sheets? for the last several years, by reducing (or eliminating) unmanageable debt, many are now in a far better position (and frame of mind) to buy new vehicles, make home repairs or remodel, take vacations, as well as to make many other necessary (or even ?discretionary?) purchases. The result of this increased consumer spending? You guessed it, more new jobs!

Time to Look at the ?Forest,? Not Just at the ?Trees?

Have you been keeping up with these recent business and economic developments/trends? Are you even aware of them? Chances are, you may not be. Why? Because, if you are like so many currently employed people, you probably have been so busy these past several years looking at the ?trees? that you felt you really didn?t have the time to even consider looking at the ?forest?! Well, now would be a good time to start doing that.

Are you dissatisfied with your current job, maybe even considerably dissatisfied with it? Would you really like to change your situation, but aren?t quite sure how to go about accomplishing that goal?* Are you among those currently employed men and women who remain somewhat ?shell-shocked? as the result of work experiences during the last several years, e.g., watching friends and colleagues lose their jobs, doing the work of two or more people with little or no additional compensation and/or genuine appreciation from your employer? Are you sick and tired of being told how ?lucky? you are to still have a job? Are you still ?keeping your head down? and not even considering the improved?and improving?career opportunities that are right now before your eyes?

If any part(s) of the preceding paragraph describes you and your current career situation, then 2013 could definitely prove to be the year you can begin to turn things around for yourself and your career! But you must make sure you are adequately prepared, that you have properly branded yourself to be seriously considered for the genuine career opportunities that either now loom or soon will be looming on the job market horizon.

In future blogs throughout the remainder of this year and into the next, I will be discussing tactics and strategies you can utilize to create and maintain the type of professional brand you will need to effectively compete for future career opportunities. In the meantime, I would love to hear from you and learn about your experiences in today?s job market, as well as about your plans for the future job market. Health Fitness House: Pain Management New Risks in Common ...

People always take pain and pain medication for granted. Usually, they seek pain management treatment only when the pain grows worse or becomes intolerable and only when pain killers cant seem to give them relief anymore. But before that much-avoided visit to the doctor, how do people handle or manage pain on their own?
Most of them take over-the-counter pain medication which is, of course, fine when it comes to treating occasional bouts of pain from ordinary and common known causes. When it comes to chronic pain or pain that keeps on recurring for weeks, months or years, some people attempt to play doctor by giving themselves pain medication in doses according to their own liking. This is extremely dangerous and harmful to the body due to the many side effects that are associated with prolonged use and large doses of over-the-counter pain killers.

KINGSTON, R.I. November 28, 2012 A team of archaeologists from the University of Rhode Island, the Israel Antiquities Authority, and the University of Louisville have discovered the remains of a fleet of early-19th century ships and ancient harbor structures from the Hellenistic period (third to first century B.C.) at the city of Akko, one of the major ancient ports of the eastern Mediterranean. The findings shed light on a period of history that is little known and point to how and where additional remains may be found.

The discoveries were presented on November 15 and 17 in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research by URI assistant professors Bridget Buxton and William Krieger on behalf of the Israel Coast Exploration project.

According to Buxton, three of the four well-preserved shipwrecks found off the coast south of Akko were first detected using a sub-bottom profiler in 2011. Later, storms stripped off several meters of inshore sediments and temporarily revealed the wrecks, as well as an additional large vessel. The wrecks are now reburied.

During the brief time the shipwrecks were exposed, the Israel Antiquities Authority investigated one of them: a 32 meter vessel which still preserved its brass gudgeon (rudder socket) and many small artifacts, such as plates, a candlestick, and even a cooking pot with bones in it. Laboratory analyses completed this summer by the IAA revealed that the ship's wood came from Turkey. The team believes these ships may have belonged to the Egyptian navy under Admiral Osman Nurredin Bey, whose ships were severely damaged in his attempt to capture Akko in the Egyptian-Ottoman War of 1831. The town eventually fell to Egyptian land forces under Ibrahim Pasha in 1832.

"These ships have occasionally been exposed and buried again by storms since we found them," Buxton said. "We're in a race against time to find other ships in the area and learn from them before storms totally dislodge or destroy them."

Although shipwrecks from the 1800s are not the highest priorities in a region where civilization goes back thousands of years, Buxton is excited by the discovery for what it tells her about where much older ships may be found.

"Like many underwater archaeologists I'm very interested in finding a well-preserved example of an ancient multi-decked warship from the Hellenistic age," said Buxton. "These ships were incredible pieces of technology, but we don't know much about their design because no hulls have been found. However, a combination of unusual environmental and historical factors leads us to believe we have a chance of finding the remains of one of these ships off the northern coast of Israel."

Buxton believes that the ships they are looking for are likely buried in the coastal sediment, which has built up over the centuries through natural processes. However, time is not on their side. "That protective silt is now being stripped away," she said. "And it's being stripped away a lot faster than it was originally dumped, by a combination of development, environmental changes, and the effects of the Aswan Dam." The Nile River has historically deposited large quantities of silt in the area, but the dam has significantly reduced the flow of silt.

The archaeologists found the ships and another early modern vessel within Akko's modern harbor while testing their equipment in preparation for an ongoing survey out in deeper water. The sub-bottom profiler detects anomalies below the sea floor. "It's the gift that keeps on giving," Buxton said. "We found so many targets to explore that we didn't have time to check all of them, but even just having information about where things are helps Koby (Jacob Sharvit, director of the IAA Maritime Antiquities Unit) know where to look after any big storms."

One line of buried targets detected off the southern seawall of old Akko is particularly suggestive. Continuing excavations in this area over the summer revealed an alignment between these targets and a newly-discovered slipway and shipshed structure, which continued out under the sea floor 25 meters from the Ottoman city wall. The feature resembles other naval shipsheds found in places such as Athens where they were used to haul up ancient warships. The excavation project was initially undertaken to strengthen the eroding sea wall, but it also revealed Hellenistic masonry, pottery vessels, an ancient mooring stone, and a stone quay 1.3 meters below the modern sea level. The possibility that much more of the Hellenistic port lies well-preserved under the sea floor is exciting for the archaeologists, because it means that shipwrecks from earlier centuries that have so far not been found at Akko may simply be buried deeper down in the sediment.

"We've got fragmentary historic records for this area in the Hellenistic period, and now we've found a very important feature from the ancient harbor. Ancient shipwrecks are another piece of the puzzle that will help us to rewrite the story of this region at a critical time in Mediterranean history," she said.

Located on the northern coast of Israel, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Akko is one of the few cities in the Mediterranean with more than 5,000 years of maritime history. Also known as Acre, Ake and Ptolemais, its port was an important waypoint for the Phoenicians, Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans and other ancient maritime empires. In the Hellenistic period, it was bitterly fought over by the rival empires of Egypt and Syria.

"Understanding the history and archaeology of Akko's port is crucial to understanding the broader issues of maritime connectivity and the great power struggles that defined the history of the Eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic Age," Buxton said.

Can Reality TV Boost Self-Control? | World of Psychology

Can Reality TV Boost Self-Control?Flipping through one of Psychology Today?s recent issues, my eyes focused on a short article ?Just Give In. Five Indulgences that actually boost self-control? by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D.

What are these five indulgences? Personally, I was hoping chocolate was on the list. (Unfortunately, it?s not!) McGonigal narrows it down to these five things: a single espresso, an afternoon nap, a snack, YouTube and reality television.

The author writes that ?Willpower diminishes as the day wears on, but anything that reduces stress, boosts your mood, or recharges your energy can also reboot your self-control.?

Even ?reality TV??

Last night, after watching various contestants on a popular reality show sing for 90 minutes, I felt like falling asleep. Willpower? I must be watching the wrong program. Survivor might give me some energy: watching people trudge through swamps and sleep in tents, screaming at each other and falling in ?love? the next episode.

I kept reading, hopeful that the small paragraph devoted to the indulgence of reality television would explain our culture?s obsession with watching other people. People on a screen and not, say, upstairs in a different room or a phone call away.

?Willpower is contagious,? the author continues. ?Many reality shows feature people working hard to overcome obstacles as they lose weight, face their fears, or organize their clutter.?

I paused reading and recalled a past co-worker who spent, unfortunately, at least 30 minutes every single day talking about her favorite show, The Biggest Loser. We worked side-by-side and so this was particularly irritating, but even more so was the fact that she spent time talking to me ? and anyone else who would listen ? about her diets. She had a new diet every week and none of them worked.

I guess the show?s ?willpower? did not translate to her lifestyle. Sort of like how I can?t sing a note despite watching all of these silly singing shows.

The article concludes with ?You can ?catch? extra self-control just by watching someone pursue a goal.? Hmm. While the author of this article believes that television can boost willpower and productivity, I disagree. Watching television is a sedentary activity and it uses very few brain cells ? feeding your dog uses more. [Ed. - Although it may be a common popular perception, there's also little research that supports the idea that reality TV shows can help a person with their own willpower or act as a personal motivator.]

So, what?s the verdict? The reality is that watching reality television is a form of escape. I doubt it promotes ?self-control? (am I the only one who eats dinner while watching television?) but it has ingrained its way into our culture.

That aside, watching the presidential debates far exceeds the drama I have witnessed in any episode of Survivor. In the end, ?real life? is reality.

Droopys Pride to capture the big prize in Sheffield Stadium Standard - Dup

Droopys Pride is running well these days. His current good form makes him the most appealing contestant in Sheffield Stadium Standard - Dup, to be hosted by Sheffield on Tuesday, November 27th.

The black dog has matchless skills. His ability to make strong finishes always makes him the one to watch out. E. Parker?s charge is producing good results these days. He put his journey back on the winning track at the end of October, when taking the top prize by a length?s distance.

Another comprehensive victory came to him early in November, when he beat Fire Height Spec by three and a quarter lengths. The son of Blackstone Gene had every chance of striking hat-trick, but failed unfortunately. On the thirteen of this month, Sheffield?s audience saw him missing the gold by one and a quarter lengths.

It was a disappointing loss. Droopys Pride reacted quickly, and got his act together. On his latest trip, he showed an impressive performance. Despite getting crowded at the first bend, he succeeded in establishing dominance at the fourth bend. Making no mistake afterwards, he claimed the first place by one and a quarter lengths.

Having made a few solid efforts lately, the skilful hound is all set for more. So, one needs a special thing to stop him from taking the honours. Among his opponents are: Trickys On Fire, Endova Rossi, Change Of Shift, Droopys Cinders and Hather Siobs. The 500 metres meeting, which holds a winning prize of 200 pounds, is scheduled to begin at 19:58 GMT.

Droopys Cinders is well drawn, looking to make a break for freedom. Her recent form is a concern though. Change Of Shift has kept good company, and cannot be underrated. Hather Siobs, on the other hand, will be picking up momentum from the third corner. The black bitch is coming from Sunderland, where she enjoyed mixed fortune.

Endova Rossi has run some big races around here in the past. Another bold effort is likely. Trickys On Fire, from the sixth box, can come up with a strong wide-running - a threat to the selection.

By The Associated Press

FORT MEADE, Md. ??Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history, is seeking to avoid trial by arguing before a military court at Fort Meade, Md., that he has already been punished enough.

Manning is expected to testify Tuesday in a pretrial hearing that is set to run through Sunday, that he was locked up alone in a small cell for nearly nine months at?Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va.,?and forced to sleep naked for several nights ??treatment his?lawyers say constituted illegal punishment.?

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but that rarely happens. The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

In a 1956 case, U.S. v. Bayhand, a military appeals court ordered all charges dismissed against a soldier who had been forced during his pretrial confinement to do hard labor alongside a sentenced prisoner. The court ruled that the soldier had been given an illegal order.

Since then, there have been few, if any, cases in which pretrial punishment has led to dismissal of all charges. Lt. Col. Eric Carpenter, chairman of the criminal law department at the judge advocates school in Charlottesville, Va., said he couldn't find one but he couldn't say for sure that the remedy hasn't been granted.

Manning has also offered to take responsibility for the leak by pleading guilty to reduced charges. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on the offer and prosecutors have not said whether they would still pursue the charges against him.

He was kept at the Marine Corps brig from July 2010 to April 2011. The military contends the treatment at Quantico was proper, given Manning's classification as a maximum-security detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others. He was later moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he was re-evaluated and given a medium-security classification.

A United Nations investigator called the conditions of Manning's time at Quantico cruel, inhuman and degrading, but stopped short of calling it torture.

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy, the most serious of the 22 charges.

He is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks while he was working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Protecting your Children's Inheritance | Fifty Plus Advocates

By Linda T. Cammuso

When parents name a child in a will or trust, or list the child as a joint owner on an asset (e.g. a bank account) or as a beneficiary of life insurance or an IRA/401K, the asset becomes the child?s property upon the parent?s death.

Today more than ever, parents are concerned about how children and grandchildren will handle their inheritances. Statistically, inherited money is spent at a significantly faster rate than a person?s earned or saved money. Whether because the children are young, in debt, struggling with an addiction, or simply not good with money, many parents fear that their life savings will quickly vanish in the children?s hands.

In addition to voluntary spending, children also stand to lose inherited assets involuntarily:

?With a skyrocketing divorce rate, many inheritances will be lost to children?s spouses in future divorce proceedings.

?Inheritances can be quickly lost to bankruptcies, foreclosures and other creditor problems.

?Children in high-risk professions may become the target of a lawsuit and lose their inheritance to a judgment creditor.

?Children who are disabled may lose certain benefits (such as SSI or Medicaid) if the inheritance raises their assets beyond program limits.

?A child with college-age children can suffer adverse college financial aid consequences from the receipt of an inheritance.

The good news is that some simple modifications to your estate plan can protect your children?s (or other beneficiaries?) inheritance from virtually all financial threats. With a straightforward trust arrangement, your children can benefit from their inheritance yet not have it considered their asset for creditors, divorces, public benefits or even their own unwise spending.

Your estate plan presents a unique opportunity to provide a level of asset protection for your children (or other beneficiaries) that they would not be able to achieve for themselves once the inheritance comes into their name. This is because the laws of most states (including Massachusetts) do not allow a person to establish a trust with their own assets and benefit from it while at the same time shielding it from their creditors. Yet, a person can establish a trust with their assets, for the benefit of someone else, and with the right language protect the trust assets from the third party-beneficiary?s creditors.

Bottom line: if you leave all or a portion of your children?s inheritance in trust for their benefit, you can protect it both from them and their outside financial exposures.

Gastric bypass surgery helps diabetes but doesn't cure it, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? After gastric bypass surgery, diabetes goes away for some people -- often even before they lose much weight. So does that mean gastric surgery "cures" diabetes? Not necessarily, according to the largest community-based study of long-term diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery. For most people in the study, e-published in advance of print in Obesity Surgery, diabetes either never remitted after gastric surgery or relapsed within five years.

Among the two thirds of the study's patients whose diabetes at first went away, more than a third re-developed diabetes again within five years after gastric surgery. After adding in the one quarter of patients whose diabetes never remitted after surgery, most (56 percent) of the study's patients had no long-lasting remission of their diabetes following gastric surgery. However, when diabetes did go away, the research team extrapolated, it stayed away for a median of eight years.

Which kinds of obese people with type 2 diabetes are likely to get the most benefit from gastric surgery? "Our results suggest that, after gastric surgery, diabetes stays away for longer in those people whose diabetes was less severe and at an earlier stage at the time of surgery," said principal investigator David E. Arterburn, MD, MPH, a general internist and associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. "Gastric surgery isn't for everyone," he said. "But this evidence suggests that, once you have diabetes and are severely obese, you should strongly consider it, even though it doesn't seem to be a cure for most patients."

The multi-site study tracked 4,434 adults at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and HealthPartners for 14 years: from 1995 to 2008. The research arms of all three of these integrated health care delivery systems -- and Group Health Research Institute, where the study's results were analyzed -- belong to the HMO Research Network. The patients had type 2 diabetes that was either controlled with medication or else uncontrolled, and they were also obese enough to be candidates for gastric bypass surgery.

"Diabetes is an increasingly common disease that tends to keep getting worse relentlessly," Dr. Arterburn said. More than 25 million American adults have diabetes -- and as populations age and keep gaining weight, 50 million are predicted to have it by 2050. Already, diabetes accounts for 5 percent of all U.S. health care spending. And it raises the risk of blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"Prevention is by far the best medicine for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Once you have diabetes, it's really hard to get rid of. Attempts to treat it with intensive lifestyle changes and medical management have been disappointing." For instance, the National Institutes of Health recently halted the Look AHEAD study of intensive lifestyle changes for people with diabetes. Despite improvements in risk factors like body weight, fitness, and blood pressure, sugar, and lipids, that study showed lifestyle changes did not lower the outcomes that matter most: heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"No wonder so many were excited to learn that diabetes can remit after gastric surgery -- even, in some cases, before any significant weight loss -- and many were hoping that gastric surgery might be a 'cure' for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Our study is the first major evidence that diabetes often recurs after gastric bypass surgery." Still, he added, even after diabetes comes back, having had a long period of post-surgery remission is likely to have many positive effects, such as fewer complications of diabetes: less damage to eyes and kidneys, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The researchers are now funded by the National Institutes of Health to study that possibility in this same population. Dr. Arterburn is also leading a randomized controlled pilot trial of intensive behavioral treatment vs. gastric surgery at Group Health with colleagues from the University of Washington.

It's still not clear whether diabetes relapse happens because of gaining weight back or because of underlying the progression of diabetes. But patients' weight -- before and after surgery -- was not strongly correlated with remission or relapse of diabetes in this population.

As part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) program, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded this project under contract HHSA290-2005-0033-I-TO10-WA1, led by Dr. Arterburn.

Syrians want to know: 'Are you okay after Superstorm Sandy?'

With the sound of mortars in the background, Syrians in Aleppo express concern for our American correspondent and his storm-battered homeland.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / November 18, 2012

Syrian women work on their field in the village of Tarafat, Syria in October. Many Syrians have expressed concern for Americans hit by hurricane Sandy.

I had just sat down to interview a commander of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo and we were exchanging the normal pre-meeting pleasantries as some distant gunfire cracked in the background. After 20 months of conflict here, most artillery and gunfire goes unnoticed unless people are close enough to be directly affected.

With this as the backdrop for our interview, I was taken off guard when he asked if my friends and family were all right after Superstorm Sandy.

As a Californian living abroad, I was aware of Sandy. I had seen a few pictures of the aftermath, but I hadn?t even followed the Sandy news close enough to know that it had been classified as a ?superstorm,? as a opposed to a hurricane. Yet here was a man whose nation is being torn apart by a violent civil war that had claimed the lives of several friends and tens of thousands of Syrians, and he?d been following Sandy news.

I initially thought the comment was a one off, a lone hurricane watcher, perhaps he was a Syrian with an interest in meteorology. Yet it has happened again and again and everyone who asks knows that it was a superstorm, not a hurricane.

Working in the midst of a war like Syria, it?s easy to assume that for those involved the conflict, the situation is their entire life and there is little time for details, like a destructive storm thousands of miles away. But Superstorm Sandy is just one of the odd questions about America you might encounter in Syria as people try to take a mental break from the war.

One night, I found myself with a group of FSA fighters watching Jumanji on an Arabic movie station that gives Arabic subtitles. We got into a debate about whether the child actress in the film was a young Drew Barrymore or someone else. (It was a teenage Kirsten Dunst.)

A few days later, I sparked a heated discussion when I jokingly asked a Syrian activist wearing a glove on only one hand if it was a tribute to Michael Jackson. The person wearing the glove argued that while Michael?s music was impossible not to enjoy, it had been tainted by the scandals surrounding his personal life. His friend argued that art is not defined by the artist and Michael Jackson remains hands down one of the best singers ever, regardless of what happened off stage.

In all the conflicts I have ever covered, I find myself in these conversations.?Everyone tries to hold on to a normal world of news and pop culture to take them beyond their current hardships.

Credit Expert Completely Destroys Occupy Wall Street's Financial

A couple of months ago, Occupy Wall Street quietly published its own version of a personal finance manifesto.

In a nutshell, "The Debt Resistor's Operations Manual" is 122 pages of some of the dodgiest financial advice we've ever seen.

Though there are a few decent pieces of information, it's all lost as soon as they start encouraging cash-strapped consumers to lie, cheat, and steal their way to a debt-free lifestyle.

In one particular passage, Occupy hashes out several steps to living credit-free. We ran them by credit expert John Ulzheimer, President of Consumer Education at?SmartCredit.com and blogger for?Mint.com.?

And he found it all quite amusing.

Below, we list a few parts of Occupy's strategy, along with Ulzheimer's reaction.

Occupy Wall Street:? For housing utilities, if you have a roommate, you can ask them to put the accounts in their name. If you live alone, ask a relative or friend.

John Ulzheimer: And as far as turning your family into lenders, family members don't want to lose money any more than lenders want to lose money. They'll know after the first "default" that you're not worthy of borrowing money. So technically, you're still being assessed, just by family members. Further, nothing tears a family apart faster than lending money to other family members. ?Suggesting that people borrow money from family members is step one toward family disharmony.

OWS: Opt for services that don?t require credit checks. If a company requires a check, try to talk them out of it. Build up an old-fashioned trusting relationship by spending time?talking with the person. They may choose to bypass the?credit check.?

JU: The problem is that most lenders and service providers pre-determine their underwriting standards so talking to someone or building the trust of one person in a large bank is meaningless because the decision to let you have the service has already been made by someone else you'll never meet in a city you'll never visit.

OWS: Create your own credit report: put together a portfolio showing you are a trustworthy person (reference letters,?job history, life narrative).

JU: That's as worthless as the paper it's written on. ?Lenders and service providers don't consider self made credit reports because of the chances that they're not honest...The only way to reject the system, other than ceremonially, is to never, ever borrow money for any reason from any company. Otherwise, you're in the system. You may not like it, but you're in the system.

OWS: Build networks of mutual support in your community so you?rely less on outside services.

JU: I'm sorry but I'm laughing reading this. ?There are over 100,000,000 people in this country (part of the 99%) that have great credit and don't have any issues getting loans or services at great rates and terms. Again, like their letter to the CFPB, it appears that whomever is in charge of OWS's "credit strategy" doesn't understand credit. And you can quote me on that one.

NEC shows 2014-era portable DNA analyzer that could outpace your favorite crime drama

NEC shows 2014era portable DNA analyzer that finishes faster than most crime dramas

NEC gave us promises of truly on-the-spot forensics when it unveiled its first portable DNA analyzer back in 2007, although the reality hasn't been quite in line with the dream: its current system takes an hour to get a result and won't win any awards for sleekness. From what we're seeing of a next-generation analyzer due in 2014, those expectations are more likely to be met. The new version puts the full DNA extraction, amplification and separation processes on a newer chip that meets NEC's original goal of producing output in 25 minutes -- faster than a short cop drama, if you include the commercial breaks. Few beyond the police will be casually tossing the analyzer around given its 70.5-pound weight and $120,000 price, but a much slicker design at least gives it the profile of a small, rolling suitcase. The upgrade could be vital for identifying suspects and victims in record time; if our only worry is that NEC takes all the mystery out of our favorite TV shows, we'll be more than satisfied.

Eight policemen wounded in Russian prison protest

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Eight Russian policemen were injured trying to disperse a crowd outside a prison where 250 inmates staged a roof-top protest demanding the release of a group of fellow prisoners from a punishment cell, authorities said on Sunday.

Russian state television showed pictures of a group of inmates standing on the roof of the prison holding white banners reading "people, help" in the town of Kopeysk near the industrial city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals mountains.

Details of the incident remain unclear with human rights activist Oksana Trufanova telling the Echo Moskvy station that OMON special police troops attacked a group of inmates' relatives outside the prison.

"They beat us with batons. Their eyes were shining. I had never been in such mayhem," Trufanova said. Police said 38 people were detained, but denied OMON officers had beaten people outside the prison.

Trufanova said the protest was a consequence of regular beatings in Kopeysk prison. The local prison authority said in a statement the situation inside the prison was now stable and under control.

Police said the troops were attacked by groups of drunken youths who were throwing bottles and shouting obscenities. Prison mutinies in Russia are relatively rare.

More than 700,000 Russians are currently behind bars and human rights activists regularly complain of poor living conditions, cases of torture, beatings and disease in prisons.

Conditions in Russian prisons came to international attention after Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer for equity fund Hermitage Capital died a Moscow prison. The Kremlin's own human rights council says he was probably beaten to death.

The local prison authority said the protesters had no demands other than the release of a group of their fellow inmates from a punishment cell. It said the group had violated prison rules and the demand to release them was illegal.
