EE expands 4G LTE again, total now stands at 74 towns across the country

EE, the UK's only 4G LTE carrier has announced another round of expansions, taking their total coverage up to 74 towns across the country and over 50% population coverage. The latest list sees another 13 towns in various areas of the country supported by 4G LTE.

EE customers in Ashton-under-Lyne, Chatham, Gillingham, High Wycombe, Merthyr Tydfil, Oldham, Oxford, Rochester, Runcorn, Sale, Stafford and Wigan should now be seeing 4G LTE. This follows on from the announcement of their new, 30-day LTE SIM-only contracts that offer the chance to try 4G for themselves without the weight of a long contract.

These regular expansions from EE are good news for their customers, and we still wait on for their rivals to launch their own LTE networks. Recently Vodafone stated they were aiming for a September launch, in part through not wanting to launch 4G without the iPhone. The iPhone 5 will currently only support EE LTE in the UK.

So, anyone seeing LTE for the first time on their EE iPhone 5? What do you think of the speeds you're seeing?

Four dead after planes collide and crash near Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) ? Two small planes collided and then crashed in the desert on Friday, killing all four people aboard the two aircraft, officials said.

Phoenix and Daisy Mountain Fire Department officials said the collision and crash involved two single-engine planes with two people in each aircraft.

Officials said the crash occurred in extreme north Phoenix, about 15 miles northwest of Deer Valley Airport.

One of the planes was registered to Bird Acquisition LLC, which does business as TransPac Aviation Academy, a school for commercial pilots in north Phoenix.

The business said Friday that it was still gathering information about the crash and declined to immediately comment.

Several bystanders reported seeing the planes collide but the flight directions of the planes before the crash or other details weren't immediately available, officials said.

"Both of them collided. We don't know how or what," said Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Nunez. "The skies are clear."

An initial report said three people were killed and two people were injured. Fire officials with the Phoenix and Peoria city fire departments and Daisy Mountain Fire Department later said four people had died and there were no survivors.

Television news footage showed only charred wreckage left from one of the planes, while the other was fairly intact.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate.

It could take months before the cause is determined, Gregor said.

Federal investigators were en route but it typically takes several months for the NTSB investigation to determine a probable cause for air accidents, Gregor said.

Pebbly rocks testify to old streambed on Mars

May 30, 2013 ? Detailed analysis and review have borne out researchers' initial interpretation of pebble-containing slabs that NASA's Mars rover Curiosity investigated last year: They are part of an ancient streambed.

The rocks are the first ever found on Mars that contain streambed gravels. The sizes and shapes of the gravels embedded in these conglomerate rocks -- from the size of sand particles to the size of golf balls -- enabled researchers to calculate the depth and speed of the water that once flowed at this location.

"We completed more rigorous quantification of the outcrops to characterize the size distribution and roundness of the pebbles and sand that make up these conglomerates," said Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson, Ariz., lead author of a report about them in the journal Science this week. "We ended up with a calculation in the same range as our initial estimate last fall. At a minimum, the stream was flowing at a speed equivalent to a walking pace -- a meter, or three feet, per second -- and it was ankle-deep to hip-deep."

Three pavement-like rocks examined with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) during the rover's first 40 days on Mars are the basis for the new report. One, "Goulburn," is immediately adjacent to the rover's "Bradbury Landing" touchdown site. The other two, "Link" and "Hottah," are about 165 and 330 feet (50 and 100 meters) to the southeast. Researchers also used the rover's laser-shooting Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument to investigate the Link rock.

"These conglomerates look amazingly like streambed deposits on Earth," Williams said. "Most people are familiar with rounded river pebbles. Maybe you've picked up a smoothed, round rock to skip across the water. Seeing something so familiar on another world is exciting and also gratifying."

The larger pebbles are not distributed evenly in the conglomerate rocks. In Hottah, researchers detected alternating pebble-rich layers and sand layers. This is common in streambed deposits on Earth and provides additional evidence for stream flow on Mars. In addition, many of the pebbles are touching each other, a sign that they rolled along the bed of a stream.

"Our analysis of the amount of rounding of the pebbles provided further information," said Sanjeev Gupta of Imperial College, London, a co-author of the new report. "The rounding indicates sustained flow. It occurs as pebbles hit each other multiple times. This wasn't a one-off flow. It was sustained, certainly more than weeks or months, though we can't say exactly how long."

The stream carried the gravels at least a few miles, or kilometers, the researchers estimated.

The atmosphere of modern Mars is too thin to make a sustained stream flow of water possible, though the planet holds large quantities of water ice. Several types of evidence have indicated that ancient Mars had diverse environments with liquid water. However, none but these rocks found by Curiosity could provide the type of stream flow information published this week. Curiosity's images of conglomerate rocks indicate that atmospheric conditions at Gale Crater once enabled the flow of liquid water on the Martian surface.

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 science instruments to assess the environmental history in Gale Crater on Mars, where the rover has found evidence of ancient environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

Sony CEO Hirai: Xperia Z coming to a US carrier shortly

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai had some good news to deliver on stage at D11 -- for US fans, at least. According to him, the Xperia Z, which currently serves as the company's flagship smartphone, is expected to arrive on a US carrier shortly. Unfortunately that's the extent of the details Kaz was willing to offer up, as we expect he wants to give the unnamed operator the opportunity to make the announcement itself. With that said, we have our suspicions that T-Mobile may be involved, thanks to its recent appearance in the FCC with T-Mobile radios. He did, however, mention that this success story is in part thanks to the company's increased marketing efforts in this part of the globe. We'll keep you updated with the news as it trickles out.

Update: David Beren from TmoNews grabbed a few shots of the Xperia Z with T-Mo branding, which certainly adds credence to our suspicions that the Z will wind up with the UnCarrier.

From NES to Xbox One, How The Big Three Described Their Consoles

What do you call the box that plugs into the TV and plays games? "Game console"? Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have been changing the terms they use for their Entertainment Systems, PlayStations, and Xboxes ever so slightly, ever so purposefully, for two decades. Have a look.

Let's start with Nintendo.

Kotaku researcher extraordinaire Andr?s Neltz has helped pull press releases for each of Nintendo's six game console releases. We've added emphasis so you can see the important stuff.

From NES to Xbox One, How The Big Three Described Their ConsolesS

Back in the '80s, Nintendo starts with a faint effort to describe themselves as not making a game console. They then commit to admitting they're making a game machine for the next five generations.

NEW YORK, October 14, 1985 ? Nintendo of America Inc., the American subsidiary of the Japanese electronic games manufacturer, has introduced a home video entertainment system that includes an interactive video robot and the Zapper light sensing video gun. The Nintendo Entertainment System includes a Control Deck, two Controllers, R.O.B., the video robot, the Zapper and two game packs - Gyromite and Duck Hunt.

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 9, 1991 ? Following nearly three weeks of hectic shipping activity from its Redmond headquarters, Nintendo of America Inc. Monday announced that its 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES) is now available in stores nationwide. The new home video game system joins Nintendo's portable Game Boy and the Nintendo Entertainment System as the third in the company's record-breaking entertainment product line-up.

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 30, 1996?Meeting overwhelming consumer demand, Nintendo of America Inc. today launched Nintendo 64, the world's first 64-bit home video game system, to the U.S. market at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $ 199.95(a). Expected to be the number-one selling home video game system this holiday season, and one of the nation's top 10 "most wanted" gifts on children's holiday wish lists, Nintendo projects it will sell its entire supply, more than one million Nintendo 64 units, in North America over the next six months.

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 15, 2001 ? If you're creeping through a harrowing haunted house in search of your missing brother...facing off against a turtle-back behemoth high atop a castle...or directing the actions of a hundred miniature sprouts across the floor of a mountainside garden...you know you've finally entered the innovative, one-of-a-kind realm of NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM). On Sunday, Nov. 18, video game players will find themselves immersed in the incomparable game play offered by the world's only new single-purpose video game console, as 700,000 NINTENDO GAMECUBE systems go on sale across the country.

REDMOND, Wash., November 16, 2006 ? Nintendo's new Wii(TM) video game system not only changes how people play games, but redefines how they interact with both the system and their televisions. With the Wii Menu, Nintendo offers a gateway to new experiences through a collection of interactive channels people can use to customize their gaming and entertainment options.

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 16, 2012 ? Nintendo's Wii U? console ? the first new home video game system in six years ? arrives on Nov. 18, aiming to change the landscape of games and entertainment with its new Wii U GamePad controller. With more than 30 launch-day games for all types of players, Wii U arrives just in time for the holidays and is poised to be the must-have gift of the season.

From NES to Xbox One, How The Big Three Described Their ConsolesS

Here's Sony, spanning four generations, declaring themselves the maker of a game system, then backing off before finally returning to that claim this year:

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Sept. 7, 1995?Months of anticipation will culminate this Saturday, Sept. 9, with the formal introduction and availability of the Sony PlayStation, the highly-anticipated video game system that is the $ 5.2 billion industry's most auspicious debut of the decade.

FOSTER CITY, Calif., September 27, 2000 ? As the company prepares to release the highly-anticipated PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system in the North American market, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today the schedule of launch activities to support the biggest consumer electronics launch in history.

Los Angeles, CALIF., May 16, 2005 ? At a press conference held in Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION?3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world?s most advanced Cell processor with super computer like power.

New York, February 20, 2013 ? Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today introduced PlayStation?4 (PS4?), its next-generation gaming platform for the home, alongside the videogame industry's brightest and most creative minds at PlayStation?Meeting 2013.

From NES to Xbox One, How The Big Three Described Their ConsolesS

Microsoft technically always acknowledged games, but there's this other term that crept its way in...

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 15, 2001 ? Today the Microsoft? Xbox? video game system rocks the continent with its arrival on store shelves at thousands of retailers across North America.

REDMOND, Wash. ? Nov. 21, 2005 ? In less than 24 hours, gamers and adrenaline junkies alike will converge on thousands of retail outlets to be among the first to purchase the Xbox 360? next-generation video game and entertainment system from Microsoft Corp. Droves of dedicated fans are expected to line the streets as more than 4,500 retailers open their doors at 12:01 a.m. to answer the demand for the Xbox 360 console and 18 launch games, including ?Perfect Dark Zero?,? ?Project Gotham Racing? 3? and ?Kameo?: Elements of Power?,? from Microsoft Game Studios.

REDMOND, Wash. ? May 21, 2013 ? A new vision for the future comes to life today as Microsoft Corp. unveils Xbox One, the all-in-one gaming and entertainment system created for today and the next generation. At Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash., the company showcased how Xbox One puts you at the center of all your games, TV, movies, music, sports and Skype.

There.

That may not explain everything there is to know about Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's game console ambitions, but the essence of this seems right: Nintendo is gaming-centric, Sony has flirted with being the same and Microsoft's wanted to make an entertainment set-top box for quite some time.

But can't anyone just say they're making a game console? Anyone???

July 10, 2012 - OUYA is a new game console for the TV, powered by Android. We've packed this little box full of power. Developers will have access to OUYA's open design so they can produce their games for the living room, taking advantage of everything the TV has to offer.

Oh, okay. Thanks, Ouya.

Skagit River bridge collapses in Washington State; I-5 closed near Mount Vernon

*Photos below are courtesy of the Everett Herald and HeraldNet.com, and credit to photographers Jennifer Buchanan and Jon Bauer...

------------------------------------------------------------

The Skagit River bridge collapsed on Thursday night, around 7 p.m. PST, leaving cars in the river and a highway closure between Burlington and Mount Vernon, in Washington State.

Two men and one woman were rescued from the water and all are in stable condition at nearby hospitals, so it doesn't appear anyone has received life-threatening injuries. Rescue boats were also sent to recover a car and a pickup truck (towing a trailer) that went off the bridge and into the river.

Traffic on the Interstate-5 highway has been stopped in both directions, and is now completely closed (as of 9:57 a.m. PST). The Skagit River bridge is a four-lane section of the highway, located on the I-5 between Burlington and Mount Vernon, Wash.

This weekend (May 24-26) figures to be very busy for traffic in the area and along the I-5, as thousands of people are heading south for Memorial Day weekend and attending the Sasquatch Music Festival near George, Wash.

Travelers from B.C. to Sasquatch and to anywhere else south of the accident (such as Seattle, Tacoma, or Bellevue) are being advised to take alternate routes.

Southbound traffic intended to cross the bridge is now being rerouted at Highway 20 to Burlington Boulevard (Burlington) and northbound traffic is being rerouted at College Way to Riverside Drive (Mount Vernon).

------------------------------------------------------------

I-5 Skagit River Bridge Alternate Routes ? Washington State Department of Transportation (May 24, 2013)

------------------------------------------------------------

The stretch of the I-5 that crosses the bridge carried over 70,000 vehicles per day and is a major route for travel and trade between Seattle and Vancouver and British Columbia and the United States. There is currently no timetable for traffic to return to normal, with some saying it could be weeks.

"Now we begin the recovery stage dealing with a major interstate highway that is nonfunctional at the moment," said Marcus Deyerin, a spokesman for the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team. "We were extremely lucky that it wasn't worse."

News 1130 reported on Friday morning that a caller to Komo News Radio blamed the collapse on a truck driver whose vehicle struck the bridge.

"That caused the collapse," the caller said. "It hit the steel girder. It was in the right-hand lane, I was in the left-hand lane about 50 feet in front of the truck. The truck struck the very first steel girder on the right-hand side. When it got over in the right-hand lane it started to get down in height, if he would have been in the fast lane, he would have cleared. The right-hand top corner of the box struck the corner of the bridge and made it collapse. I watched the whole thing in my mirror."

Washington State Patrol confirms they are inspecting to the truck and speaking with the driver, who has been identified as William Scott of Spruce Grove, Alberta and drives for Mullen Trucking.

"He's a little bit bewildered," said Ed Scherbinski, vice president of Mullen. "He looks in the (rearview) mirror and the bridge is coming down behind him."

State Patrol blamed the accident ? which occurred on the northbound side of the bridge ? on the height of the load, which was a housing for drilling equipment. The trucking company, however, said it had a state permit to carry their load across the bridge.

According to the Everett Herald, the website NationalBridges.com "classifies the Skagit River bridge over the I-5 as 'functionally obsolete', which indicates the design is not ideal, but it is not rated as 'structurally deficient.'"

In September, 2011, the Skagit River bridge was listed on the Washington State Department of Transportation's "Structurally Deficient Bridges" list.

According the Department of Transportation, "Structurally deficient means that a bridge requires repair or replacement of a certain component, such as cracked or spalled concrete or the entire bridge itself.

"Being structurally deficient does not imply that the bridge is in danger of collapse or unsafe to the traveling public."

Healthy Community Challenge Day returns June 1 - Marysville Globe

MARYSVILLE ? The city of Marysville invites area families to get started on getting fit this summer at the fifth annual Healthy Communities Challenge Day, a free community celebration designed to inspire citizens to reach their health, nutrition and fitness goals.

Challenge Day will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at Allen Creek Elementary School, located at 6505 60th Dr. NE in Marysville. Registration for Snohomish County?s Get Movin? summer fitness program will also be available on site, to help motivate families to adopt more active lifestyles.

?Marysville strives to go the distance in being a more fit and health-conscious community,? Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring said. ?Take the challenge, and help us kick off a healthy summer at Challenge Day.?

Challenge Day offers participants a venue to explore and learn more about fitness, nutrition, gardening, physical health and recreation, and to meet face-to-face with many community organizations, with a host of interactive activities and demonstrations thrown in.

Challenge Day will feature numerous health and fitness activities including:

? Free health screenings.

? Fitness demonstrations.

? Live entertainment.

? Hula Hoop giveaways.

? Take-home garden seeds.

? Community services.

? Face painting, and much more.

This year?s Challenge Day will host more than 70 vendors, with an emphasis on interactive activities and fun, according to city of Marysville Recreation Coordinator Andrea Kingsford.

?From the climbing wall to hula hooping, Frisbee golf and Zumba demonstrations, there are plenty of ways to get involved and get active,? Kingsford said.

Challenge Day will feature live entertainment, including performances by Maketa Wilborn and X8 Interactive Drumming at 11 a.m., the Hot Dog Jumpers and a jump rope giveaway at noon, and Seattle musician Johnny Bregar with hand-clapping, foot-stomping children?s music, blending blues and Cajun-flavored Americana tunes.

Marysville Parks and Recreation will promote its 95210 for Health campaign, a community-wide strategy developed by Community Health Solutions that promotes child health and life-long healthy habits for individuals. It?s not a ZIP code, but rather five daily habits for good health ? at least nine hours of sleep, five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, two hours of screen time, one hour of physical activity, and zero sugary drinks or tobacco.

Marysville Together partners with the city to put on Challenge Day, aided by their primary sponsor, the Everett Clinic, and numerous other sponsors, according to Kingsford, who also chairs the coalition. Marysville Together is a community partnership that, since the 1980s, has promoted safety, diversity and awareness, and responded to the needs of youth, working together toward a safer and healthier community.

Challenge Day also serves as a venue to celebrate the accomplishments by individuals and organizations involved in the Marysville Healthy Communities Project. Since 2007, the project?s community-based collaborative response has been aimed at reducing obesity in the community and the chronic diseases associated with it.

?Through the Healthy Communities Project, we are seeing real changes in lifestyle in Marysville that will help reduce obesity in our community and the chronic diseases that are linked to it, like diabetes,? city of Marysville Parks and Recreation Director Jim Ballew said.

Miles of new trails ? including the Bayview Trail and bike lanes ? as well as pedestrian improvements, the Wilcox Farm Community Garden, free walking and swimming programs, a kickball league and other recreational programs are just a few examples of environmental changes that have occurred over the past five years.

For more Challenge Day information, contact Marysville Parks and Recreation at 360-363-8400, or visit the Marysville Healthy Communities Project website at http://marysvillehealthycommunitiesproject.com.

Suspected Oregon teen bomb plotter due in court

By Teresa Carson

CORVALLIS, Oregon (Reuters) - An Oregon teenager arrested on suspicion of making explosives and plotting what police said was a Columbine-style attack on his high school was due in court on Tuesday to face charges in the case.

Grant Acord, 17, was taken into custody at his mother's home on Thursday after police got a tip that he had produced a bomb and was planning to detonate it at West Albany High School, some 70 miles southwest of Portland.

A search of the residence in north Albany turned up six home-made explosives, including pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails and napalm bombs under the floorboards of Acord's bedroom, authorities say.

Prosecutors were expected to file attempted murder charges against Acord at the afternoon hearing in Corvallis, Oregon. Under Oregon law, he would be tried as an adult.

A Corvallis criminal defense lawyer for Acord could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.

"My heart goes out to everyone affected by Grant's struggle with PANDAS, a rare form of OCD," the boy's mother, Marianne Fox, said in a statement released through her attorney, Alan Lanker.

"I grieve for my son, but understand and support the efforts of law enforcement to keep our beloved community safe," Fox said. "This is a challenging and confusing time for everyone who knows Grant. I will have no further comment while I wait with the rest of you to see what unfolds."

Lanker said that Acord's parents were divorced and that the boy lives primarily with his mother.

In their search of the residence, officers also discovered diagrams of the high school, which "led us toward the conclusion that he was planning a Columbine-style attack," according to Captain Eric Carter of the Albany Police Department.

Carter was referring to the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado, in which two teenagers armed with guns and home-made bombs killed a teacher and 12 other students before committing suicide.

"He was definitely following a detailed checklist," Carter said of Acord. "It appears he had a systematic, well-documented plan, this was not just an errant note."

According to the website of the International OCD Foundation, PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. It says the disorder is caused by an immune reaction to strep and the symptoms are similar to those of childhood obsessive compulsive disorder and tic disorders.

'No insurance accepted' ? one possible future of medicine under ...

You?ve probably heard of colleges like Hillsdale and Grove City College that don?t take federal loans and instead charge much lower tuition rates. Here?s the story of a?family physician who has stopped taking health insurance and instead posted reasonable prices for basic primary care visits and procedures. Michael Ciampi, a doctor in South Portland Maine, is demonstrating one possible future for primary care medicine in the age of Obamacare.

Last week, California revealed its new Obamacare rates, and it?s a lot less pretty than the media have portrayed it. Middle-of-the-road health insurance plans on the new exchange there will cost 80 percent more for individuals?than the current market average. The price of the cheapest plan next year for a single 40-year-old man will be about twice as expensive as the cheapest plan currently available?for him at EHealthInsurance.com.

If California provides any indicator of where the system is going, then Ciampi is offering one possible alternative that many doctors and patients could ultimately choose when prices just become too unreasonable. A secondary health care market could emerge in which the healthy pay low prices out-of-pocket for basic services, then carry the legal minimum insurance plan or even pay the relatively low fines (or ?taxes?) for remaining uninsured until they get really sick.

Ciampi?took his revolutionary step in April, the Bangor Daily News reports.?No Medicare, no Medicaid, no private insurance ? just pay him directly when your visit is over. He has posted his prices online, and he claims that without all the insurance paperwork, he?s been able to reduce prices dramatically so that patients can pay out of pocket without much trouble:

?

[T]he decision to do away with insurance allows Ciampi to practice medicine the way he sees fit, he said. Insurance companies no longer dictate how much he charges. He can offer discounts to patients struggling with their medical bills. He can make house calls...

?I?ve been able to cut my prices in half because my overhead will be so much less,? he said.

Before, Ciampi charged $160 for an office visit with an existing patient facing one or more complicated health problems. Now, he charges $75.

Patients with an earache or strep throat can spend $300 at their local hospital emergency room, or promptly get an appointment at his office and pay $50, he said.

This isn?t the only possible path forward, but it is one, and Ciampi expects other doctors will follow suit. If he succeeds in this endeavor and remains profitable, he will have demonstrated just how badly third-party payers inflate the costs of health care.

Windsor humane society not just for cats and dogs ... - Metro News

If your ideal animal companion has feathers or hooves, the Windsor-Essex Humane Society may still have you covered.

Although dogs and cats make up the bulk of the creatures at the shelter, the humane society is drawing attention to some of its other potential pets.

?We have a lot of people who are surprised when they come to the adoption centre and see how many rabbits and guinea pigs we have,? said director Melanie Coulter. ?And people don?t really think of us in terms of farm animals either.?

The shelter is currently stocked with a trio of horses, as well as a pigeon named Owl and a goat named Buster. There?s also the usual bounty of bunnies and guinea pigs, as well as a lone hamster called Theodore.

Anyone can adopt any of the animals, Coulter said, provided it?s ?a good match for the household.?

For more information, visit the humane society?s website.

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Kuwait media say the Gulf nation's oil minister has resigned after criticism of a $2.2 billion compensation payment over a collapsed business deal.

There was no immediate official comment Sunday on the reported resignation of Hani Hussein, but he has faced calls to be questioned in parliament over the payment to Dow Chemical Co.

Some lawmakers have demanded an investigation into the settlement this month with Dow. The payment was for the 2008 withdrawal of Kuwait's state-run petrochemical company from a planned plastics joint venture.

The websites of several newspapers, including pro-government Al Watan, reported Hussein's resignation was accepted.

Kuwait is one of OPEC's top exporters, but the resignation is not expected to bring disruptions. Kuwait's oil policy is set by a special panel controlled by the ruling family.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Protesters rallied in dozens of cities Saturday as part of a global protest against seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces, organizers said.

Organizers said "March Against Monsanto" protests were held in 52 countries and 436 cities, including Los Angeles where demonstrators waved signs that read "Real Food 4 Real People" and "Label GMOs, It's Our Right to Know."

Genetically modified plants are grown from seeds that are engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, add nutritional benefits or otherwise improve crop yields and increase the global food supply.

Most corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in the United States today have been genetically modified. But critics say genetically modified organisms can lead to serious health conditions and harm the environment. The use of GMOs has been a growing issue of contention in recent years, with health advocates pushing for mandatory labeling of genetically modified products even though the federal government and many scientists say the technology is safe.

The 'March Against Monsanto' movement began just a few months ago, when founder and organizer Tami Canal created a Facebook page on Feb. 28 calling for a rally against the company's practices.

"If I had gotten 3,000 people to join me, I would have considered that a success," she said Saturday. Instead, she said an "incredible" number of people responded to her message and turned out to rally.

"It was empowering and inspiring to see so many people, from different walks of life, put aside their differences and come together today," Canal said. The group plans to harness the success of the event to continue its anti-GMO cause.

"We will continue until Monsanto complies with consumer demand. They are poisoning our children, poisoning our planet," she said. "If we don't act, who's going to?"

Protesters in Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina, where Monsanto's genetically modified soy and grains now command nearly 100 percent of the market, and the company's Roundup-Ready chemicals are sprayed throughout the year on fields where cows once grazed. They carried signs saying "Monsanto-Get out of Latin America"

In Portland, thousands of protesters took to Oregon streets. Police estimate about 6,000 protesters took part in Portland's peaceful march, and about 300 attended the rally in Bend. Other marches were scheduled in Baker City, Coos Bay, Eugene, Grants Pass, Medford, Portland, Prineville and Redmond.

Across the country in Orlando, about 800 people gathered with signs, pamphlets and speeches in front of City Hall. Maryann Wilson of Clermont, Fla., said she learned about Monsanto and genetically modified food by watching documentaries on YouTube.

"Scientists are saying that because they create their own seeds, they are harming the bees," Wilson told the Orlando Sentinel. "That is about as personal as it gets for me."

Chrissy Magaw was one of about 200 protesters who walked from a waterfront park to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Pensacola.

She told WEAR-TV that knowing what you eat and put into your body is the most important decision you make every day.

In Birmingham, Ala., about 80 protesters turned out at Rhodes Park, some dressed as bees and butterflies, Al.com reported.

SI Reasoning, an activist, artist and musician who lives in Vestavia, Ala., described Monsanto's handling of GMOs as a "huge, uncontrolled experiment on the American people."

Monsanto Co., based in St. Louis, said that it respects people's rights to express their opinion on the topic, but maintains that its seeds improve agriculture by helping farmers produce more from their land while conserving resources such as water and energy.

The Food and Drug Administration does not require genetically modified foods to carry a label, but organic food companies and some consumer groups have intensified their push for labels, arguing that the modified seeds are floating from field to field and contaminating traditional crops. The groups have been bolstered by a growing network of consumers who are wary of processed and modified foods.

The U.S. Senate this week overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization, a lobbying group that represents Monsanto, DuPont & Co. and other makers of genetically modified seeds, has said that it supports voluntary labeling for people who seek out such products. But it says that mandatory labeling would only mislead or confuse consumers into thinking the products aren't safe, even though the FDA has said there's no difference between GMO and organic, non-GMO foods.

However, state legislatures in Vermont and Connecticut moved ahead this month with votes to make food companies declare genetically modified ingredients on their packages. And supermarket retailer Whole Foods Markets Inc. has said that all products in its North American stores that contain genetically modified ingredients will be labeled as such by 2018.

Whole Foods says there is growing demand for products that don't use GMOs, with sales of products with a "Non-GMO" verification label spiking between 15 percent and 30 percent.

Skagit River bridge collapse: Looking for a temporary fix to get traffic moving

It may be months before the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River near Seattle is repaired. Until then, authorities are considering a temporary?bridge of the type used in Europe during World War II.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / May 25, 2013

Workers inspect a damaged beam on a section of bridge adjacent to a collapsed portion of the I-5 span at the Skagit River in Mount Vernon, Wash. A truck carrying an oversize load struck the four-lane bridge, sending a section of the span and two vehicles into the river.

The I-5 bridge that got clipped by a truck and fell into the Skagit River in Washington State may have been old, its design officially ?functionally obsolete.? But the temporary fix to get traffic moving again along this busy highway corridor linking Seattle north to Canada may be of a type that?s even older.

Authorities are considering a ?Bailey Bridge? like the ones used in World War II to get Allied tanks and other military vehicles across rivers in Germany and Italy after D-Day. Such bridges are designed to be portable and temporary, constructed quickly then taken apart to be used elsewhere.

The Washington State Department of Transportation built a 180-foot Bailey Bridge over the Chehalis River in 2007, after a flood washed out a county bridge, the Seattle Times reports.

For highway use, such bridges can clear spans up to 200 feet long, according to Bailey Bridges, Inc. in Fort Payne, Ala. The I-5 bridge over the Skagit River is 160 feet long, so the idea there is feasible.

For such a system to work, however, the existing concrete piers under the bridge?s road surface would have to be sound.

That?s just one of the things state and federal authorities need to investigate as they piece together what happened to send a portion of the bridge plummeting into the river Thursday evening, then figure out a permanent solution.

?Patience is going to be the watchword,? Gov. Jay Inslee said at a press conference Friday.

Gov. Inslee, a former member of Congress who won the governorship last year, says it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge, which averages 71,000 vehicles a day. Meanwhile, other bridges crossing the Skagit have backed up traffic through residential and business areas.

What?s known for sure so far is that a truck with a large load clipped one of the metal trusses that are part of the essential design holding up the bridge. That section of the bridge collapsed immediately, sending a pickup truck and an SUV into the river. No one was killed, and injuries to drivers and passengers were minor.

While the Federal Highway Administration lists the bridge as "functionally obsolete? because it?s an old design, it had not been classified as structurally deficient.

The bridge has a maximum clearance of about 17 feet ? higher than the truck?s load in this case ? but the clearance curves down to 14 feet 5 inches along the sides, where the collision occurred. The tractor-trailer was hauling drilling equipment southbound.

The truck?s owner ? Mullen Trucking in Alberta,?Canada ? had a permit to carry the oversize load on the Interstate 5 highway. The driver has not been cited for any infractions.

It's not rare for trucks to strike bridges in Washington State, the Associated Press reports. The state Department of Transportation lists 21 bridge-strikes involving trucks last year, 24 in 2011, and 14 in 2010.

Officials performed a special inspection six months ago on the bridge that collapsed because there were indications it had been struck by a different vehicle.

A report released Friday said the checkup was done due to "impact damage," and inspectors identified tears, deformations, and gouges on the northbound side of the bridge.

In that Nov. 29, 2012, impact, an overheight truck struck a metal overhead truss on the bridge. An inspection crew determined the bridge to be safe, with only minor repairs required. Those repairs were added to an existing list of bridge maintenance items to be completed at a future date.

The collapse of the bridge north of Seattle highlights recent calls by President Obama and state officials to repair the nation?s infrastructure.

?Regardless of how this happened, the collapse of the Skagit River Bridge in Washington State is a timely reminder of our nation?s need to invest in critical infrastructure upgrades,? Ed Rendell, Co-Chair of Building America?s Future and former Governor of Pennsylvania, said in a statement. ?Our nation?s bridges, roads and highways are deteriorating before our eyes, and today?s incident was a call to action,?

?According to our report??Falling Apart and Falling Behind,? America currently has more than 69,000 structurally deficient bridges, many of which haven?t been updated in decades,? Mr. Rendell said. ?If the US wants to remain competitive in the global economy and provide safe, efficient transportation systems for our nation, then I urge state and local officials to act now and find creative ways to fund these projects, so that future collapses and accidents can be avoided.?

UK zookeeper dies from tiger attack injuries

LONDON (AP) ? A young zookeeper who was mauled by a Sumatran tiger at an animal park has died, British police said Saturday.

The woman, 24-year-old Sarah McClay, was in the big cat's enclosure at South Lakes Wild Animal Park in northwest England's Cumbria when she was injured Friday, police said in a statement.

The park's owner, David Gill, told BBC radio that McClay had worked at the park for several years and was "very proficient" in handling big cats, but that the park had strict safety protocols in place against entering the tiger's enclosure.

"For some unknown reason, an inexplicable reason, because there is no reason for why she did it, she opened the door and went into the tiger enclosure and straight into the tigers, and now we'll never know why," Gill said.

McClay was taken to a hospital by air ambulance, but died later from her injuries.

Cumbria police said Saturday they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The tiger has been locked in its enclosure since the attack and there are no threats to the public, they said.

Judge orders Philadelphia faith-healing couple held in son's death

By Dave Warner

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Philadelphia couple charged with murder after their baby died without medical care must be held in jail whether or not they make bail, a judge ruled on Friday.

The couple, Herbert and Catherine Schaible, believe in faith healing, and those who share their beliefs might be willing to harbor them if they decide to flee, Judge Benjamin Lerner told a court hearing in Philadelphia.

The Schaibles were charged with third-degree murder on Wednesday after the April 18 death of their seven-month-old son Brandon from bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and strep.

The Schaibles were already on probation for involuntary manslaughter stemming from the death of another child, Kent, who died in 2009 at the age of two, also of bacterial pneumonia.

The judge ruled that while Herbert Schaible, 44, and his wife, who is 43, may not be wealthy enough to flee on their own, they might be able to find others around the country who do not think they did anything wrong.

"There is a community around the country that might be willing to harbor them," the judge said.

The Schaibles are members of a Philadelphia church, the First Century Gospel Church, which, according to its website, is committed to relying on God alone for physical healing, with no drugs or human remedies.

Defense attorneys argued that neither Schaible was a flight risk, and attorney Mythri Jayaraman, representing Catherine Schaible, said her client had turned herself in.

The judge said the couple could face up to 50 years in prison if they are convicted.

The Schaibles have seven other children, all older than the two who died. They have been in foster care since Brandon's death.

Review of Joyce Herzog's Choosing and Using ... - At Home & School

For any parent needing more information about how to choose appropriate materials for their child out all of the MANY curriculum choices now available to homeschoolers, the?Choosing and Using Curriculum Set?by Joyce Herzog?is a solid resource.joyce herzog

From a general list of questions to ask about the curriculum you are considering, to specific recommendations for language arts, history, and math, this 108-page paperback provides some thoughtful considerations for both newbie and seasoned homeschoolers.?Joyce Herzog has divided the learning and teaching process down into manageable pieces, and her dependable guidance is based on her own extensive education and 30 years of teaching and homeschooling experience.

The book contains 28 chapters covering such topics as:

  • Curriculum Types
  • Education Styles
  • Grade Levels
  • Independent Learning
  • Starting the school year ?right?
  • Early Childhood Training
  • How to choose a math curriculum
  • Choosing a reading method
  • How to Interest a Child in Reading
  • Comparing handwriting styles
  • Adapting Materials for Special Situations

The resource ebook is a hyperlinked 39-page .pdf that contains:

  • General Resources
  • FREE Resources
  • Links to help with special needs such as Deaf, Blind, Autistic, Speech and Language Development, and Dyslexia

You will also find some links for legal advice, special needs support groups, and homeschool magazines.

choosing and using curriculum joyce herzog

What I find most helpful is the general recommendations that assist with choosing and customizing any?education resource. Homeschoolers are now a significant consumer demographic, and it seems every day there are new websites, programs, and textbooks geared for home education. To have a list of questions and guidelines to apply to anything new and shiny that we see in those catalogs and magazines is a valuable tool.

For instance, Chapter Fifteen compares seven popular learn-to-read methods, and explains their strengths and weaknesses. Then Chapter Sixteen provides a comparison of several reading programs and which method they use. These are the kinds of examples that homeschoolers find helpful to make important, money-saving decisions about what to use in their homeschool.

Each chapter of?Choosing and Using Curriculum?is a snapshot- a few pages, easy to read in one sitting, outlined for easy reference. Specific curriculum recommendations are obviously limited to a few per subject, as an exhaustive resource would be hundreds of pages. My only concern about the physical book was the many spacing and typographical errors that undermine the professional appearance of the book.

Choosing and Using Curriculum Set?is a one physical book and one ebook set for $15. Joyce Herzog offers many more resources on her site- the?Scaredy Cat Reading System,?Learning in Spite of Labels, and?Timeless Teaching Tips?are just a few.

Jennifer Aniston strips in new movie trailer

Celebs

One of your 1990s "Friends" just got a heckuva lot more friendly. In the new trailer for her upcoming movie "We're the Millers," Jennifer Aniston plays a stripper who agrees to pretend to be a suburban mom to help Jason Sudeikis smuggle marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico.

And Aniston seems to have her character's job down pat. She's seen sashaying around a stripper pole and giving Sudeikis a lap dance while wearing a platinum wig and black lingerie.

In the plot, Sudeikis is roped into a deal by rich guy Ed Helms -- who owns his own orca! -- and agrees to enlist a fake family and drive an RV across the Mexican border to pick up the pot. The hope is that a friendly looking family won't invite suspicion at the border crossing, and Sudeikis also enlists a sullen runaway (Emma Roberts) and a geeky neighbor boy (Will Poulter) to pretend to be his kids.

Of course, it doesn't quite work out. Later in the film, thefake family is confronted by armed drug dealers. Aniston then strips down to peach lingerie and gyratesto Mickey Avalon's "Stroke Me" to prove she's really a stripper and not a soccer mom. She's got all the right moves, and somewhere back in the 1990s, Ross Geller is passing out from shock.

Aniston and her "Friends" also made the news this week when the actress and former co-stars Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry joked about a possible reunion in a skit for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

"We're the Millers" hits theaters Aug. 9.

DNA damage: The dark side of respiration

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Adventitious changes in cellular DNA can endanger the whole organism, as they may lead to life-threatening illnesses like cancer. Researchers at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich now report how byproducts of respiration cause mispairing of subunits in the double helix.

The DNA in our cells controls the form and function of every cell type in our bodies. The instructions for this are encoded in the linear sequence of the four subunits found in DNA, the bases adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). Random changes in the sequence can lead to cell dysfunction, and may result in unrestricted cell proliferation and malignancies. Mutations can be induced by a variety of agents. For example, cellular respiration, i.e. the reduction of inspired oxygen to water, which powers cell function, also generates highly reactive oxygen species that can damage DNA, with the purine bases G and A being particularly susceptible to this kind of attack.

"Reactive oxygen species are responsible for two different sorts of DNA damage, as they induce formation of both 8-oxo-G and FaPy-G," says Professor Thomas Carell of the Department of Chemistry at LMU. In 2004, work done by Carell and his team defined how 8-oxo-G generates mutations. However, the basis for the mutagenic effect of FaPy-G has remained obscure ? until now. In their latest publication, Carell and his colleagues describe how FaPY-G leads to mispairing of bases in the double helix.

Pernicious partner swapping

One G in one strand of the double helix normally matches up with a C on the other, forming a G:C pair. But as a consequence of damage by reactive oxygen species, the guanine base may be transformed into FaPy-G, so that we get a FaPy-G:C base pair. "We have now shown that, in the course of DNA replication prior to cell division, FaPy-G interacts with adenine, leading to the formation of FaPy-G:A base pairs. This partner swap is unusual, since unmodified guanine normally does not team up with adenine," Carell notes.

FaPy-G is subsequently recognized as abnormal and is removed by DNA repair enzymes. The missing base is replaced by a T ? which is the usual partner for A. The net result is that the original G:C base pair has been converted into an A:T pair, and the base sequence has undergone a potentially dangerous mutation.

This outcome is made possible by the fact that the cell's damage-control systems find it surprisingly difficult to distinguish the normal guanine base from its aberrant derivative FaPy-G during DNA replication. "That this defect then leads to mispairing with adenine is one of the main reasons for the spontaneous development of tumors," says Carell. "So with every breath we take, our risk of getting cancer goes up by a teeny-weeny bit." Further insights into the reasons why FaPy-G often eludes the cell's detection and correction systems could help to improve the treatment of cancer, as the inhibition of DNA repair processes in tumor cells increases their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs.
