Church of Scotland Moderator joins Twitter

(John Young)

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Lorna Hood

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has embraced mass communication in the 21st century by joining Twitter.

The Right Reverend Lorna Hood once claimed she was "the loneliest person on the internet" with only one Facebook friend but she's hoping for a few more followers than that on Twitter.

Despite some reservations, Mrs Hood has said she is looking forward to engaging with other Twitter users and has set herself the modest goal of attracting 500 followers by Christmas.

She got the ball rolling with her first tweet on Tuesday in which she joked that she "had to give in to Comms team".

"Looking for the Idiots' Guide," she said.

After just a day on the social media network, she is well on the way to her goal of 500 followers, with just under 200 following her so far.

Mrs Hood said she joined the website in a bid to reach out to churchgoers across the globe and to further involve the Kirk with the changes taking place in the digital age.

She said: "Jesus has many followers. I'd be happy with four or five hundred followers by Christmas. I'm looking forward to tweeting and talking with everyone who uses Twitter."

Lawson, Saatchi are granted preliminary divorce

LONDON (AP) ? Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson and art baron Charles Saatchi have taken the first legal step toward finalizing the end of their marriage.

In a hearing at London's High Court lasting less than a minute, District Judge Anne Aitken granted the couple a decree nisi ? the first of two stages of divorce.

The divorce of 70-year-old Saatchi and 53-year-old Lawson can become final after six weeks and a day, with the granting of a decree absolute.

The couple separated after a newspaper published photos last month of Saatchi grasping his wife's throat during an argument at a London restaurant.

A Moderate Verdict

Bradley Manning Verdict Pvt. Bradley Manning is escorted by military police after he was found not guilty of aiding the enemy

Reporters and leakers all over Washington, D.C., are heaving a sigh of relief: On Tuesday, a military judge found Pvt. Bradley Manning not guilty of ?aiding the enemy.?

Manning, whose sentencing begins tomorrow, will probably still be spending at least a couple of decades in prison for 19 other crimes, but his conviction on most of those charges had been expected; he?d already pled guilty to some of them. But ?aiding the enemy? was the most serious accusation. It?s labeled a capital crime; although prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty in this instance. He would have been put behind bars for life. More broadly, a guilty verdict on the charge of aiding the enemy would have turned the climate for investigative journalism?already as tense as it has been for many years?into a toxic dust cloud.

Prosecutors had argued during the trial that the documents Manning supplied in 2010 to WikiLeaks?which, in turn, provided them to the New York Times and other publications?were read by Osama Bin Laden, who took comfort from them. Therefore, they contended, Manning had aided the enemy.

It was an explosive argument. Few officers or enlisted personnel had ever been tried for ?aiding the enemy??codified at Article 104 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice?and none had been convicted on that charge merely for leaking classified documents to a news agency (or, in WikiLeaks? unusual case, an intermediary to news agencies).

Had the judge accepted the argument and found Manning guilty of the broad new charge, the implications would have been profound. By such a verdict?s logic, The New Yorker could have been accused of aiding the enemy for publishing Seymour Hersh?s article about the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib. Hersh?s intention may have been to call attention to war crimes being committed by U.S. officers in Iraq, but a prosecutor could certainly have argued that the story served al-Qaida?s interests; and it?s certainly true that the revelations over Abu Ghraib were used as recruitment tools by jihadists worldwide.

In fact, by this logic, any published criticism of an American war, or of U.S. foreign policy generally, could be interpreted as ?aiding the enemy? if copies were found in enemy hands. For that matter, news reports of Southern racism in the 1950s could have been prosecuted on those grounds because the Soviet Union?the enemy in the era?s Cold War?cited those reports in its anti-American propaganda campaigns, especially in the developing world.

True, Manning was tried in a military court by military prosecutors and a military judge. A newspaper or magazine, in these hypothetical scenarios, would be tried in a federal court by Justice Department prosecutors and a civilian judge. The standards are different. Precedents from military trials are rarely cited?and have no legal standing?in civilian courts.

Still, judges and prosecutors are free to cite legal arguments from any type of court they wish. Steven Aftergood of the Secrecy News website notes that, in the indictment against Stephen Kim?the State Department official who recently leaked information about North Korean nuclear testing to a FoxNews reporter?the Justice Department prosecutors cite an argument used by Chief Judge Denise R. Lind; the military judge in the Manning case. Specifically, they quote Col. Lind as saying (on Pages 59?60) that the accused ?had reason to believe the information he communicated could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation.? They add that Lind said the actual damage done by the leak is irrelevant to the fact that he had ?reason to believe? the information ?could be used? to ill effect.

In the Manning verdict today, Judge Lind herself didn?t buy that argument. We don?t yet know why. Was it because she thought the prosecutors hadn?t made their case that Manning knew, or had reason to believe, that Osama Bin Laden would read the news reports based on his leaks? Or did she think the argument was absurdly broad on the face of it?

A federal judge in Virginia came to that latter conclusion in the 2006 case, United States of America vs. Lawrence Franklin, et al., in which a Pentagon official (Franklin) was indicted for leaking classified information to two executives of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee?and, more alarmingly, the two AIPAC executives were indicted for receiving that information, a crime under the rarely invoked Espionage Act of 1917.

Initially, the presiding judge, T.S. Ellis, allowed the charge to stand, noting that the law ?applies to academics, lawyers, journalists, professors, whatever.? He added that if there?s a problem with that, the law should be changed; but judges can only interpret and apply the law, not nullify it. In the end, though, Ellis went against his earlier pronouncement and dismissed the indictment against the AIPAC analysts, on the grounds that the statute was too vague, broad, inconsistently applied, and draconian. (Franklin, the Pentagon official, was convicted, however for violating his security oath.)

There is another possible reason for Manning?s acquittal on the charge of aiding the enemy: It?s possible the judge simply thought he wasn?t guilty. The charge was always a bit of a stretch for the prosecutors. Article 104 of the UCMJ states that the crime applies to any person who

?(1) aids, or attempts to aid, the enemy with arms, ammunition, supplies, money, or other things; or (2) without proper authority, knowingly harbors or protects or gives intelligence to or communicates or corresponds with or holds any intercourse with the enemy, either directly or indirectly. (Italics added.)?

For the judge to find Manning guilty under Article 104, she would have had to conclude that ?other things? includes classified documents, and that giving intelligence to the enemy ?indirectly? includes giving it to WikiLeaks, which gives it to a newspaper, which is read by the enemy. Such stretches wouldn?t have been unprecedented, in civilian or military courts, but, again, Judge Lind chose not to go there.

It may be that the prosecutor overreached. In his summary remarks, he lambasted Pvt. Manning as not only a leaker, a thief, a security threat, and all the rest, but also a ?traitor.? Whatever one thinks of Manning and his motives, this went too far. Article 3 of the U.S. Constitution states: ?Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.? (Italics added.) One could make a stretch and claim that Manning?s actions gave aid and comfort to some enemies; but there?s no way that he could be seen as ?adhering? to enemies or as ?levying war? (which later Supreme Court decisions have interpreted to mean physically waging war against the United States).

Whether what Manning did was right or wrong in the broader book of morality, it did violate military law. He knew that; and, in his plea, he accepted responsibility for it, accepted his fate, but always insisted that he had no intention to aid the enemy. The military court?s assent on that point was wise, beneficial for free speech, and for the country.

THE BARGAIN DOLL: Eat Healthy, Drink Healthy!

For someone who is on a #ProjectSexy mode like me, the biggest challenge in my fit lifestyle is food. Working out is not enough to achieve that perfecty toned body, but diet should come hand in hand as well. However, one of the biggest challenge for me is where to find that healthy food when I'm not at home. Where to eat? What to eat?

?Since I'm always on-the-go (and a gym rat too), I'm happy to share to you some of the basic health tricks that are fitting for our lifestyle!

1. NEVER GO FOR THE NO CARBS DIET! Common misconception: ?carbs and fats are enemies?. A proper diet is synonymous to a balanced diet. Meaning, you do not have to eliminate an entire food group, as the trick lies solely on watching your consumption. Carbs and fats aid the body in producing the energy needed in everyday work. So when you?re out, just go for low-fat alternatives; then for carbs, as they say, the darker the shade, the healthier.

2. NO CHIPS FOR SNACKS!?Snacks are crucial in keeping the body?s blood sugar level up. Apart from giving energy, they can also curb hunger pains. Even if it?s too tempting to grab a bar of chocolate or a cheeseburger, you might as well shift your mental image of?merienda?into the likes of yogurt, fruits, or low-calorie energy bars.?

3.NO MORE HIGH CALORIE DRINKS!. Reduce drinking beverages filled with calories that do not nourish the body. Coconut water has been the go-to drink of health enthusiasts primarily because of its natural hydrating properties and ability to flush out toxins. Plus, it has seven times more Potassium content than one banana. (OMG NO MORE MILK TEA & FRAPS FOR MEE)

Good thing there's a drink that?totes all the goodness of refreshment, nutrition, anti-oxidants, and potassium every day in just one drink. Tropicana Coco Quench?has made it easy to bring the natural freshness of real coconut water in a convenient Tetra Pak packaging, with up to 8-month shelf life. It comes in an on-the-go 330ml pack that you can just stash in your bag for a full day ahead.

Hope you enjoyed this little fitness trick! :)

Much Love,

The Bargain Doll

France wants mandate for EU-US trade talks published

PARIS (Reuters) - France called on Monday for the European Commission to make public its mandate to negotiate EU-U.S. free-trade talks, citing what it said was an atmosphere of mistrust over efforts to forge a landmark pact.

The U.S. and EU launched the negotiations earlier this month despite European concerns about U.S. spying that had threatened to delay the start after nearly two years of preparation. France moreover only agreed to the talks after securing assurances that its entertainment industry would be ringfenced.

"The first week of discussions on a transatlantic partnership agreement closed in a climate of doubt," Trade Minister Nicole Bricq wrote in French newspaper Liberation.

"The U.S. once again showed its splendid ambivalence. It is a country where everything seems possible and whose dynamism and energy we French envy. At the same time it is a prickly power incapable of resisting the temptations its supremacy gives it."

Stressing the need for transparency in the talks, Bricq said she had asked EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht to break with usual procedure and make the EU's negotiation mandate public.

"It doesn't contain any secrets. It's a political statement that calls for an agreement that respects our values and interests. It deserves to be debated," she said.

The Commission's mandates to negotiate international trade deals are not made public because it could weaken the EU's hand by revealing its limits to Washington and U.S. lobbies. That said, unofficial leaks of the mandate are common.

"If the talks with United States are for a partnership, and if we are working as equals, then our practices need to change so that we speak the same language," she said.

Bricq also said the Commission should regularly inform the European Parliament of the progress of the talks. At present, the Commission must do so at the end of each round.

The first round of talks, which took place in Washington from July 8 to July 12, mainly set the stage for more substantive negotiations in the weeks and months ahead as the two sides strive to reach a deal by late 2014.

(AP) ? Derek Jeter returned to the New York Yankees' lineup ? again ? with customary flair, making an immediate impact on a team desperate for power.

Jeter homered on the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay's Matt Moore, connecting Sunday soon after being activated from the disabled list for the second time this month.

"Hopefully I can help in any way, but we need contributions from a lot of people," said Jeter, who made his season debut at shortstop. "It's not like I'm some savior coming in here all of a sudden we're just going to start winning."

The captain's drive ended the Yankees' nine-game homerless drought. It was New York's first long ball by a right-hander since June 25.

Jeter received a loud ovation and came out for a very quick curtain call, waving his cap from the next-to-top step of the Yankees dugout.

To make room for Jeter, the Yankees placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the disabled list with a right rotator cuff strain. Hafner has slumped to a .205 average. He hit the last of his 12 homers on June 25, a span of 67 at-bats.

Jeter, a 13-time All-Star, had his much-anticipated return July 11 ? as the designated hitter ? after missing the Yankees' first 91 games because of a twice broken ankle. He was first injured during the opener of the AL championship series in October.

But he sustained a Grade 1 strained of his right quadriceps running out a groundball against Kansas City and went right back on the DL.

Fourth in the AL East, the Yankees have gone 4-8 during his second absence and are 54-50. New York has scored fewer runs than all but three teams in the American League this season.

Manager Joe Girardi hopes he'll be penciling the Yankees' career hits leader in the batting order nearly every day from now on.

"It changes our lineup. There's no doubt about that," he said. "And just his presence is important to this club. It's been important for such a long time."

A favorable schedule should help keep Jeter playing every day at the start. The Yankees have off-days Monday and Thursday next week, then only play six games before their next open day.

Girardi said he's been preaching a cautious approach for Jeter when he runs the bases, at least in the first few games of his comeback, to protect the leg. But the always-all-out Jeter had difficulty embracing the concept while dressing in the Yankees clubhouse before Sunday's game.

"I'll try it," Jeter said. "It's kind of hard because I've never really done it. It's not like I'm going to be jogging to first base. I can't do it. I don't think I can do that. We'll see, I'll try."

A career .313 hitter, Jeter was eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday but the Yankees instead had him participate in a simulated game that was shrouded in secrecy. The location of the workout was not disclosed until after the Yankees' 1-0 loss to the Rays.

"I don't know, it wasn't my idea. They needed to see some things," Jeter said. "Evidently they saw what they needed to see."

NOTES: RHP David Phelps (forearm strain) said he will make his second rehab start Tuesday, for Double-A Trenton. ... Injured INF 3B Jayson Nix (strained right hamstring) should be activated when the Yankees visit the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Arsene Wenger interview on management in Japan - full transcript

By Sami Mokbel

|

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was at his engaging best last Friday, as he took a question and answer session in front of a group of local businessmen during the club's tour of the Far East.

Among other topics, the Frenchman spoke candidly about why he wants to persist with the club's policy of recruiting the planet's best youngsters, what it takes to become a top level footballer, how he deals with the inflated egos of modern-day players and what ingredients he feels are needed to assemble a winning team.

Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel was in the audience at the Royal Pines Hotel, in Saitama, Japan, as Wenger gave an intriguing insight into the inner works of his mind. The full transcript is below.

Candid: Arsenal manager gave an in-depth interview about many issues that surround the club

Candid: Arsenal manager gave an in-depth interview about many issues that surround the club

?

In a highly competitive, globalised, market, how does Arsenal find the best talent?

Arsene Wenger: One of our strengths is young people know we will give them a chance. But what we look for is their motivation to be successful.

But what is motivation? How can you tell if somebody is motivated? How can you remain motivated?

AW: Well for me, motivation is a person who has the capability to recruit the resources he needs to achieve a goal. For example, earlier today I went for a jog in Saitama, but I couldn?t find my way back. I was motivated to come back to the hotel, but I couldn?t find my way. So, I was highly motivated and slowly I found my way back.

The best talent: Finding the best players is about both mental and technical attributes

The best talent: Finding the best players is about both mental and technical attributes

But what does that show?

AW: It shows that motivation is essential but not enough. You also need consistency in your motivation and that is what we try to test in players as well. For me that is a very underrated quality. I could have said: "Right, I can?t find my way back to the hotel so let?s see if I can find a taxi." But because I?m sportsman I decided not to get a taxi and that I would find my way back no matter how long it would take me, so I continued to run. That?s what I mean in the consistency of your motivation, the stamina of your motivation.

When you look at people who are successful, you will find that they aren?t the people who are motivated, but have consistency in their motivation. You have many people who start diets on January 1. Some of them last until mid-January, some give up mid-June and some of them last.

We are interested in the ones that last because that makes a successful sportsman. That doesn?t necessarily mean successful sportsmen are happy people, but it means they are determined and they are ready to hurt themselves to be successful and that?s the type we are looking for. The people that are very demanding with themselves and each other for a long time. That consistent motivation is applicable to football, business, anything you do in life.

Global gathering: Arsenal look all over the world for their players

Global gathering: Arsenal look all over the world for their players

But where do you look for that talent?

AW: We look all over the world. It?s simple as that. I?ve spent a long time in the game, and I still think it?s a little miracle how popular this game has become on a worldwide level at such a high speed. Today, when something happens in London, they know it in Saitama at the same minute. So that means Arsenal are a worldwide club and we are interested in worldwide talent. The world is small.

Previously a young boy in Saitama never had the chance to become a world class player, but today he has that chance. Because if he has the talent and determination then he will get the chance somewhere and that?s what we try to do. We try to look all over the world to find players who have the talent and desire because unfortunately, in football, there is more money than talent.

What is your experience of nurturing talent in to world class players?

AW: I believe one of the best things about managing people is that we can influence lives in a positive way. That?s basically what a manager is about. When I can do that, I am very happy. That?s not the only part of my job because the essential part is to win on a Saturday afternoon, but it is an important part. In a world where we only care about stars, it is important to say to players: "You are not a star yet, but you can become one and I will give you a chance."

At Arsenal we are proud to do that, and we have fought against the policy of only buying stars. You have to understand that a player who is a star was at one stage an unknown person who had talent. We want to be the club who gives this guy a chance.

Nurturing: Wenger is proud of his record of turning young talent into leading players

Nurturing: Wenger is proud of his record of turning young talent into leading players

You working with some of the most highly-paid athletes in the world so how big is the factor of egos in your job as a manager?

AW: If you?re asking me if the egos are big? Yes. You must know that a person, no matter how big a star he is, is ready to listen to you if it meets his needs. The condition for him to know if you meet his needs is to test you first. Is the manager capable of making him the player he wants to be. Unfortunately in management, you cannot cheat for a long time. When you are in a squad of 30 people, the players detect at a huge speed the weakness in your personality.

So that?s the moment of truth, when a person sits in front of you. They observe you and then they try to decide if you can help them. If they think you are the man who can help them, they will respect you. The next step for them is deciding whether they are in a squad who can help them to be successful. We had that problem when we were under financially restricted conditions. ?For some players we didn?t have enough stars to be successful as quickly as they wanted to be. Of course, that?s one of the problems we face in our job.

Is leaving your idea of football art only achievable by results on the pitch?

AW: A manager is a guide. He takes a group of people and says with you I can make us a success, I can show you the way. But first you have to have a clear idea of what you want. You have to have a clear concept and make it understandable so they can work with you, and that?s not very easy. That?s why it was very interesting for me to work in Japan when I did, because you have to make your ideas as clear as possible and you have to adapt to the difference of culture. And sometimes you have to maintain your own ideas against the results.

Pressure: People often forget these young players are playing in front of huge crowds and are under huge pressure to perform

Pressure: People often forget these young players are playing in front of huge crowds and are under huge pressure to perform

Is there a difference between man-management in football and in business?

AW: Not really. The only difference is that most of the time in business you manage people who have maturity. In football, you manage people who are 18, 19, 20-years-old. The responsibilities are quite big for them. We forget that these players have to perform under huge public pressure, in front of 60,00 people, with a huge responsibility to win games. I?m not sure how I would have responded to it if I was 20, rich, famous and a big star ? it?s not easy to handle.

That?s the main difference between man-management in football and business. The other big difference is that you can work in an office and be at 70 per cent of your potential and do your job well. You can?t be a footballer and be at 70 per cent of your potential and play well. And that?s where the stress comes from. One player being weak can cost you the game, the player knows that. That?s where the pressure comes from.

Every minute of every day a footballer tests himself, that puts the body under pressure, because you know you can only perform in a game if you?re 100 percent. Look at the Tour de France. Chris Froome won, but he can lose it in one day, by just having one bad day in the office. That?s top level sport.

Is there a market in Europe for Japanese players?

AW: For a manager it is a dream to have a Japanese player. If you tell him to run 10 laps, you haven?t even finished the sentence yet and he is already started. In Europe you have to convince the player that he has to run 10 laps.

No weak spots: The key to success in football is to have strong players throughout the team

No weak spots: The key to success in football is to have strong players throughout the team

What are the key ingredients of a winning team?

AW: You can?t have any weak positions. You need players who can make the difference. You need a team who can stop the other team from scoring goals, so a good goalkeeper and good defence and you need to score. You need one guy who can pass the ball, the quarterback, to one guy who can score the goal, the receiver. Once you have a guy who can give passes to score, you will always have a chance to win football games. The rest is based on teamwork and attitude.

How do you cope with having a multi-cultural squad?

AW: By creating a culture of our own. ?I?ve had years with people from 18 different countries. For example, being on time isn?t the same for a Japanese man as it is for a Frenchman. When a Frenchman arrives five minutes late, he still thinks he is on time. In Japan when it?s five minutes before the set time he thinks he is too late.

That means you have to create a new culture and identify how we all want to behave and create a company culture. That way, when someone steps out of line, we can say: ?Look, my friend, that?s not what we said.? So it?s important to have clear rules and everyone knows and agrees with it.

Multi-cultural: Wenger has created his own culture and identity at Arsenal

Multi-cultural: Wenger has created his own culture and identity at Arsenal

Do you have a go to method to inspire your team when they are feeling down?

AW: We live in a life where everyone tells us what we don?t have. Most of the time, I remind my team and my players the qualities they do have. None of us have all the qualities in life but the good thing is that we can all be successful without having all the qualities. Players shouldn?t forget the qualities they don?t have.

In business, a lot is dependent on individuals meeting personal objectives and often penalising those that don?t meet those objectives?

AW: Success in life is balance between individual achievement and co-operation with others. The West is totally focused on individual achievement, you have to be successful no matter what. Even if you have to kill your partners, even if you have to cheat a little bit ? only one thing counts and that is individual success at any price. But the Japanese culture is geared more towards co-operation with others.

Your success is graded on how you much you integrate into the collective spirit of your company. And sometimes even that can be to an excess because individual performance is not acknowledged as much as collective success. But in Europe we have gone completely the other way, the sense of co-operation with others has dropped dramatically.

The sense of happiness is linked with a good balance between the two. That?s what team sport is about. A good footballer should feel he can express himself, but also be helpful to the group. If one of the two is missing you will never be completely happy. That?s magic of team sport.

How do you deal with those who aren?t meeting their objectives?

AW: If they are underperforming, our biggest power is to drop the player. One of the difficulties in our job is that we have 25 people who fight to play on Saturday and on Friday night we have 14 who are unemployed and we tell them on Monday, let?s start again you have another chance. That?s the difficulty with our job.

Tributes underway for fallen Vegas police rescuer

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A funeral is underway for a Las Vegas search and rescue officer who fell to his death saving a stranded hiker last week.

Hundreds of uniformed officers with black stripes across their badges filled the auditorium of a Henderson megachurch to honor David Vanbuskirk.

The 36-year-old died after falling from a helicopter hoist line July 22 at Mount Charleston, northwest of Las Vegas. The hiker he was rescuing survived.

A procession of police motorcycles escorted Vanbuskirk's flag-draped casket through the Las Vegas Strip en route to Central Christian Church. Casinos displayed his photo on their massive electronic marquees as the motorcade passed.

Vanbuskirk's death marks the first time a Las Vegas officer has died on duty since 2009.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Dozens of police motorcycles drove two-by-two down the Las Vegas Strip, leading the flag-draped coffin of a search-and-rescue officer past massive electronic casino marquees bearing his photo.

The procession was the first of a series of tributes taking place Monday in honor of David Vanbuskirk, 36, who died after falling from a helicopter hoist line July 22 while rescuing a stranded hiker at Mount Charleston.

A viewing, graveside service and memorial in a Henderson church that seats 2,900 also were planned.

Authorities are still investigating how Vanbuskirk died performing a maneuver he'd done dozens of times before. The officer was on the search and rescue team since 2007 and worked for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 1999.

National Transportation Safety Board officials said they expect to release their preliminary report on the accident later this week.

Rescuers responded shortly before 9 p.m. that day to reports that a hiker was disoriented and stranded on a rocky ledge just above Mary Jane Falls. The area was marked with signs warning hikers to stay out or face fines, according to Jay Nichols, spokesman for Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

A wildfire had been burning in the area, and park workers closed some trails to protect hikers from smoking material, ash pits and falling trees. The night of the rescue, conditions were breezy with a bright moon, officials said.

After landing, Vanbuskirk attached a safety harness to the stranded man, who was hiking alone. Vanbuskirk signaled to the four rescue workers in the helicopter above to hoist them both up from the craggy ledge. But the officer somehow detached from the line in midair and fell a "nonsurvivable" distance to the ground below, officials said.

The hiker was safely rescued and was interviewed, police said.

It was the first time a Las Vegas officer had died in the line of duty since 2009.

Vanbuskirk grew up in the Las Vegas area, was married and lived in Henderson. Gov. Brian Sandoval ordered flags at state buildings to be lowered over the weekend and on Monday in Vanbuskirk's honor.

Ashton Kutcher Discusses Playing Steve Jobs in Biopic on Tonight Show

Published on 07-25-2013 11:11 PM

Many of you likely know Ashton Kutcher from his earlier years where he played characters with low IQs, but the 35-year old has made a second successful career out of tech entrepreneurship. In a recent interview with Jay Leno, Kutcher appeared rather emotional about the late Apple cofounder, Steve Jobs, whom he portrays in the upcoming biopic titled ?Jobs.? Kutcher said he skipped out on an opportunity to meet the Apple cofounder six months before his death in 2011, a move which he regrets.

Those of you who are interested in watching the video can do so below:

A transcript of the video can be found below for those of you who would prefer to read it instead:

I had an opportunity to meet him about 6 months before he passed away. I was working that day and couldn't go. In hindsight, I had the opportunity to meet the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation and I missed it. That really affected my decision to take on the role.

It was actually the day that he died... for me, I hear people talk about they knew where they were the day Kennedy died. And for me, I'll never forget the moment I heard that he died. And I pulled my car to the side of the road, and kind of took a moment. I got home and I realized, I sat down on my computer and started doing some work and I realized all the relationships I have in my life are held together by glue that he laid down.

And all the work that I do, in whatever capacity that I do it, and all the entertainment I consume.. here I have my Apple computer and my iPhone... all these things, and I realized that I had taken him for granted, and taken for granted the contributions he actually gave to society.

And I actually had a real emotional moment that day. I actually reached out to a couple of my friends. I do a lot of work in the tech venture space, and they had the same response. So when I got offered the role, I wanted to ensure that his legacy was told from someone who admired him.

"Jobs" hits theaters on August 16th for those of you who are interested in watching it.

More than 1,000 inmates escape Libyan prison

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? More than 1,000 detainees escaped from a prison near the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in a massive jailbreak Saturday, officials said, as protesters stormed political party offices in Libya's main cities.

It wasn't immediately clear if the jailbreak at the Koyfiya prison came as part of the demonstrations. Protesters had massed across the country angry over the killing of an activist critical of the country's Muslim Brotherhood group.

Gunmen outside of the prison fired into the air as inmates inside began setting fires, suggesting the jailbreak was preplanned, a Benghazi-based security official said. Those who escaped either face or were convicted of serious charges, a security official at Koyfiya prison said.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to speak to journalists.

Special forces later arrested 18 of the escapees, while some returned on their own, said Mohammed Hejazi, a government security official in Benghazi. Three inmates were wounded in the jailbreak and were taken to a local hospital, he said.

There also was confusion initially about how many prisoners broke out, with numbers of escapees ranging as high as 1,200.

Benghazi's security situation is among the most precarious in post-revolution Libya. Last year, U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in the city.

Meanwhile Saturday, hundreds gathered in the capital Tripoli after dawn prayers, denouncing the Friday shooting death of Abdul-Salam Al-Musmari. They set fire to tires in the street and demanded the dissolution of Islamist parties.

The two incidents highlighted Libya's precarious security situation and the challenges the North African country faces as it tries to restore security nearly two years after the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

In Tripoli, protesters appeared to be inspired by events in neighboring Egypt, where millions took to the streets Friday to answer a call from the army chief, who said he wanted a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by supporters of the country's ousted president, Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.

"We don't want the Brotherhood, we want the army and the police," Libyan protesters chanted, repeating a slogan also used in Egypt. Libya's nascent security forces are struggling to control the country's militias, most of whom have roots in the rebel groups that overthrew Gadhafi in 2011.

Al-Musmari, who used to publicly criticize the Brotherhood, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Benghazi.

Some protesters stormed the headquarters of a Brotherhood-affiliated political party and another Islamist-allied party in the capital, destroying furniture. Witnesses say a Brotherhood party office was also stormed in Benghazi.

Protesters angry with the Libya's weak central government also targeted the liberal National Forces Alliance (NFA), ransacking its headquarters. The party came on top in Libya's first free parliamentary elections last year.

Security forces in Libya have been unable to impose their authority on the country since Gadhafi's ouster. Militias, many made up of former rebels who fought in the civil war that toppled Gadhafi, have grown in the strength and in many areas rival the security forces in their firepower and reach. The armed forces also rely on militias for help securing the country in some cases.

On Saturday, a colonel was killed by gunmen in Benghazi. Another three security members were killed a day earlier when gunmen opened fire on them.

Security members are frequently targets in the country.

In a press conference Saturday, Prime Minister Ali Zidan said that an investigation was launched into the circumstances around al-Musmari's slaying. He said a foreign criminal investigation team will join Libyan investigators in Tripoli and Benghazi on Monday. He did not offer further details.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the Libyan government to "conduct a prompt and thorough investigation" of al-Musmari's death, believed to be the first targeted killing of a political activist.

"Libya's fragile transition is at stake if political killings go unpunished," said Nadim Houry, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "This makes investigating al-Musmari's murder all the more urgent."

Libya's top religious figure, Grand Mufti Sheikh Sadeq al-Ghariani, warned his countrymen earlier in the week against copying Egypt and bringing down the Libyan government. Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, was ousted by the military on July 3 after millions took to the streets demanding his removal.

Al-Ghariani's warning was posted Wednesday on his official website against unspecified parties "trying to create crises in electricity and gas, and those taking advantage of tribal loyalties to the ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi." Long hours of blackouts and the severe shortage of fuel contributed to Morsi's unpopularity.

Best Week in Washington Sports: The people of Richmond

John McDonnell/The Washington Post

(John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

My colleague Chris Cillizza has a great weekly feature called ?Worst Week in Washington,? where he spotlights a political figure who has landed on the wrong side of the press. I?m stealing a page out of his playbook, and it was my original intention to award a ?Worst Week? to a D.C. sports figure every Friday. But I?m generally not a cranky person, so I decided that the Bog version should be all puppies and chocolate-chip cookies. So here?s ?Best Week in Washington Sports.??

When RGIII and the Redskins landed in Richmond for training camp, they thrust the city into the national spotlight, if only for the next three weeks.

?The brand of the city just took a giant step,? Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones told WTVR. ?Whenever the Redskins are mentioned, then Richmond is going to be associated with it. So people are going to say Richmond is a great town.?

The mayor also bragged about the increase in foot traffic on the streets of Richmond, which he hopes will lead to a positive effect on the city?s economy. More than 10,000 combined fans showed up to the training facility for the first day of camp. That number will only go up on Saturday, when fans who work during the week will get to ditch their ties in favor of their favorite jerseys.

Whether the short-term flurry of activity will actually create the boost Richmond is looking for has yet to be determined. But for now the city has hope.

?It says we?re capable, that we have vision,? Jones said. ?We have the ability to break out of the mold of just being a historical city. We also want to be a contemporary city. A city where people want to come, where tourists want to visit and we can be a sports town.?

Well, a sports town for three weeks, at least.

Sex After a Heart Attack: Women Want Information

Many women who've had heart attacks want more information about how to safely resume sex afterward, a new study suggests.

Researchers conducted detailed interviews with female heart attack patients and found that many held fears about engaging in sex after a heart attack, and wondered whether their hearts could handle the exertion.

Some said their partners were concerned that sex would trigger another heart attack. "I had to convince my husband that I wasn?t going to die in bed," one woman was quoted as saying.

Despite these fears, most women said they started having sex again about four weeks after their heart attack. Often, women said they engaged in sex because they wanted to return to a "normal" life.

"You don?t always want to be the lady that had the heart attack," one woman in the study said.

However, most women said their doctor did not give them any advice about resuming sex after their heart attack. Those who did speak with their doctors reported that they initiated the conversation themselves, and that the doctor did not provide a very satisfactory answer.

"Cardiologists, in the very immediate, are trying to save lives," said study researcher Emily Abramsohn, a public health researcher at the University of Chicago. "What they're concerned about is patients' hearts," Abramsohn said. But the study shows "women want to be treated as a whole person."

Cardiologists can ease concerns by speaking openly with patients about sex after a heart attack, Abramsohn said. Women who have these concerns should know that they are not alone in feeling this way, and "it's OK to ask," for more information from your doctor, Abramsohn said.

Although nearly three-quarters of men, and close to half of women reported being sexually active before their heart attack, only about 47 percent of men and 35 percent of women say that they received counseling about when they could resume sex, according to prior research.

Some doctors may not think to discuss sex with older patients ? the average age of women in the study was 60 ? but studies show that older men and women value their sexual life, Abramsohn said.

The American Heart Association says that sex is probably safe for patients after a heart attack as long as they are in stable condition, and have no complications. Those who are unstable or who have severe symptoms should be treated and stabilized before having sex. Heart attacks rarely occur during sex because sexual activity is usually relatively short in duration, AHA says.

Patients who receive nitrate therapy for chest pain due to coronary artery disease should not use erectile dysfunction drugs, the AHA says.

The study was small, and it's possible that those who agreed to take part had views that were not reflective of the majority of women (for instance, they were especially concerned about sex after their heart attack).

The study is published today (July 24) in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Google Play Movies & TV and Music apps updated with Chromecast support

As you should have expected after the news of the Chromecast broke, there are some app updates on the way. The YouTube app doesn't need an upgrade, because Chromecast uses the same flinging method as Google TV, but Google Play Music and the Movies & TV app both needed upgrades to work with the new device, and both have received the updates.

If you check your Google Play Store updates right now, you should see updates for both apps. Other than support for Chromecast, you won't find much else new in the Play Music app, just some bug fixes and a slight UI tweak to make context menus easier to tap.?

But, the Play Movies & TV app does have a few extra additions. The app adds support for virtual surround sound on both the new Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 running Android 4.3, and there is a new option for syncing your Watch Now items across devices. Of course, there are also the usual bug fixes.?

As we said, the updates should be in your apps list in the Google Play Store.?

Strong iPhone sales buoy Apple's third quarter, shares climb

SAN FRANCISCO | Tue Jul 23, 2013 8:00pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sales of Apple Inc's iPhone trumped Wall Street estimates after U.S. shipments soared 51 percent in the third quarter, lifting its stock 5 percent even as profit fell.

The world's largest technology company said Tuesday that profit fell 22 percent as gross margins slid below 37 percent from more than 42 percent in the year-ago quarter.

The iPhone's solid showing eased concerns that growing competition is hurting demand for Apple's top-selling product as the global smartphone market matures. Rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which overtook Apple to become the world's largest smartphone maker in 2012, fueled those fears when it issued a disappointing earnings forecast earlier this month.

Apple's stock, which has fallen 20 percent since January, rose 5 percent to $437.94 in after-hours trade. It closed at $418.99 on Nasdaq.

"The iPhone number should provide some comfort to investors who were worried about smartphone demand. That's one of the reasons the stock is up. Expectations were not strong for this quarter," said Shannon Cross of Cross Research.

The company sold 31.2 million iPhones last quarter - far more than the estimated 26 million - and 14.6 million iPads.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in an interview that iPhone sales rose 51 percent in the United States from a year earlier, and 66 percent in Japan.

But revenue from greater China - an increasingly crucial market for the Silicon Valley giant as it strives for growth - dived 43 percent from the second quarter and 14 percent from the year-ago period.

Executives blamed China's slowing economy for the revenue decline but did not elaborate.

"China is a huge opportunity for Apple," Chief Executive Tim Cook said on a conference call. "I don't get discouraged over a 90-day kind of cycle."

Apple earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 a share, on revenue of $35.3 billion. That compared with a profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 a share, on revenue of about $35 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street's average forecast was for revenue of $35.02 billion and earnings per share of $7.32, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company has $146.6 billion in cash and short term securities.

HINTS ON NEW DEVICES

Investors' biggest long-term concern about Apple is whether the company has lost its innovative edge after re-imagining at least three major consumer electronics markets, with iTunes and the iPod, the iPhone and then the iPad.

Since launching the iPad mini last fall, the company has yet to update its major devices.

Cook told analysts to expect new products in coming months, with some "in new categories," but as usual he played his cards close to the vest.

"We are on track to have a very busy fall," CFO Oppenheimer said earlier during the call without going into details.

Apple forecast revenue of $34 billion to $37 billion this quarter, slightly below Wall Street's average projection of $37.04 billion.

It estimated a margin of 36 to 37 percent. Gross margins came in at 36.9 percent in the third quarter, sharply below 42.8 percent a year ago, as Apple sold more cheaper older model iPhones along with the new iPhone 5 model.

"It's pretty remarkable that they are selling as many phones as they are, given that it's not a new product," said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of Destination Wealth, which owns Apple shares. "That's really the key for them; they've got to come up with a new product."

Officials: Attacks kill 14 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents assaulted a police headquarters in northern Iraq early Wednesday, killing nine policemen as part of a series of attacks that left at least 14 dead as the country grapples with a growing surge of violence.

The attack took place in the town of Bashmaya outside the city of Mosul, which has been one of the major flashpoints in a wave of bloodshed that has washed over the country since April and left more than 3,000 people dead. The scale of the violence is intensifying fears of a return to the widespread sectarian killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

A police official said nine policemen were killed and two wounded in the initial attack. An ambulance rushing to the scene was hit by a roadside bomb, wounding the driver and his assistant, the official said.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to talk to the media.

Insurgents this year have regularly attacked security forces in Mosul, a longtime militant stronghold.

On Monday, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into an army convoy, killing at least 13 people ? including 10 soldiers. Police found the bodies of four off-duty policemen Tuesday on a road with bullet wounds in their heads. Gunmen in a speeding car also shot dead two other off-duty policemen as they were walking down a street.

Also Wednesday, a car bomb exploded as an army patrol passed by outside the northern city of Kirkuk, killing an officer and a solider, police Lt. Col. Abbas Qadir said. Five soldiers were wounded, he said. Kirkuk is 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

And in Baghdad, police found three bullet-ridden corpses across the city, police and medical officials said on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief media.

In the northern city of Tuz Khormato, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Baghdad, a bomb hidden in a motorized cart exploded in a residential area, wounding 35 people and damaging several houses, police Col. Hussein Ali Rasheed said.

The security situation in Iraq began to deteriorate after security forces cracked down in April on a protest camp in the northern city of Hawija, sparking clashes in which 44 civilians and one member of the security forces were killed, according to estimates by the United Nations.

Overall levels of violence have since escalated and insurgent attacks have become more audacious, including raids this week against two high-security prisons near Baghdad that killed dozens and set free hundreds of inmates, including al-Qaida-linked militants.

On Tuesday, al-Qaida's Iraqi branch claimed responsibility for the attack.

Brazil police: Francis security 'positive' rating

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Security officials in Brazil say they've given a "positive" evaluation to how security was handled when Pope Francis' motorcade was swarmed by faithful.

That comes from an emailed statement Tuesday from the federal police, who are in charge of security during most of the pope's seven-day trip in Brazil, his first international journey as pontiff.

Francis' motorcade made a wrong turn onto a blocked section of a main boulevard in Rio de Janeiro after his arrival Monday. For 15 minutes, the motorcade was repeatedly halted as faithful swarmed the cars, reaching for Francis.

The statement says federal police, highway police and the mayor's office all met to review the actions of security officers. It says that "the evaluation was positive, since there was no incident involving the pope or with any of the faithful."

The note says the fact that Francis kept his window rolled down showed that he wanted contact with the faithful.

PREVIEW-San Jose and unions set for court battle over pensions

By Jim Christie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's third-largest city, San Jose, and its employee unions face off in court on Monday over public pension reforms in a case that has major implications for other local authorities in the state trying to rein in the costs of retirement benefits.

The lawsuit brought against the measure, led by San Jose's police union, shows how difficult it is for local governments to break benefit promises to current and past employees even when other public services are being cut to pay for them.

San Jose's pension overhaul in San Jose was promoted by Democratic Mayor Chuck Reed and approved by nearly 70 percent of voters in 2012 but city unions argue the move violates the rights of its members and is in breach of the California state constitution. They want the court to block the measure from going into effect and to maintain the current pension plan.

"If the unions prevail it will give local leaders elsewhere reason to pause. If Mayor Reed prevails, they may get even more ambitious in finding new ways to reduce pension outlays," said Larry Gerston, a political science professor at San Jose State University.

In recent decades, municipalities across the country have provided their workers with higher retirement benefits, both pensions and health coverage, often in lieu of pay increases. But this has often created a future burden for budgets, made worse in some cases by skipping payments into pension funds.

Two other California cities, Stockton and San Bernardino, last year filed for bankruptcy due to deep financial problems that include spiking pension costs.

Detroit's decision to file for bankruptcy on Thursday, the largest U.S. municipal bankruptcy filing ever, was also partly related to the cost of pension and other post-retirement benefits for city employees.

San Jose's pension reform, which has not yet been adopted because of the lawsuit, does not reduce benefits already earned by employees, but would require them to either pay higher contributions to maintain current benefits or receive lower benefits.

It also requires new city employees to split pension contributions evenly with the city. San Jose, which has two pension funds, currently pays $8 toward pension benefits for every $3 contributed by its employees, according to Dave Low, a spokesman for the mayor.

Reed made tackling San Jose's pension spending, which rose to $245 million last year from $73 million in 2001, a priority. San Jose has had to slash other spending to help cover the costs and balance its budgets.

San Jose, Silicon Valley's biggest city, is starting to see its revenue pick up as its economy and real estate market strengthen, but Reed says city services could be back on the chopping block without the projected savings from the pension reform.

Savings from the measure will help balance San Jose's books in future years and restore services cut over the past decade in response to budget shortfalls, said Low.

A FLAWED MEASURE, UNIONS SAY

Unions for public employees don't see it that way.

"The mayor's initiative was flawed from the get-go because it pulls the rug out from employees who have worked hard, played by the rules and expected the city to keep its promise," said Steven Maviglio, a spokesman for Californians for Retirement Security, a coalition representing more than 1 million public employees.

"The foundation of California's public pension system for nearly a century is that pensions are a legally protected promise," Maviglio added.

The court hearing San Jose's case consolidated five lawsuits brought by two unions, individual employees and retirees.

The unions argue that any change in employee benefits needs to be negotiated and cannot just be imposed by the city.

Public sector unions in California say the law shields their pension benefits from changes as they are the property of employees tied to their compensation.

San Jose's public pensions are generous in comparison to others in California, which are already well above the country's average.

The average San Jose police officer and firefighter who retired in the past decade, and worked for 26 years, gets an annual pension of $100,000, while the average civilian city employee who retired in the past decade, and worked for 20 years, has an annual pension of $45,000, according to proponents of the city's pension reform measure.

The average yearly pension benefit for a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System, the pension system for state workers and scores of local government across the state, was around $29,000 in April.

The case is in Santa Clara County Superior Court, No. 1-12-CV-225926.
