Royal Calcutta Golf Club

Mood & music: Tables were set out in the lawn facing the Shamiana-like dance floor. With starters and drinks served at the table, it was a chilled-out affair with no long queues for F&B coupons. The crowd was on the dance floor by 10.30pm. DJ Hussain played a little bit of everything, from Sadi gali and Kolaveri di to Aap jaisa koi. Even the English numbers spanned generations with the Dire Straits Sultans of Swing, Boney M?s Daddy Cool and Pitbull?s I Know You Want Me. Sanober Kabir joined in and got the crowd heading for the dance floor with Munni and Chikni Chameli.

MIDNIGHT MOMENT: When the clock struck 12, guests turned around to gaze at the fireworks while others danced to Sanober Kabir?s cover of Sukhbir?s Ishq tera tadpave. Spotted in the crowd were ?soul sisters? Dipanwita and Srimoyee who cuddled up to watch the fireworks. Asked what they liked most about the evening, they said: ?The fact that they played retro numbers.?

Club speak: ?It was a successful party with over 600 guests. We wanted to close it at 400 but more requests kept pouring in,? said club CEO M.M. Singh.

Style quotient: PYTs opted for dresses and LBDs while older women went for tunics with tights or jeans. The strict dress code meant men had to take the jackets-and-tie route, though most chose to dispense with the ties after entering.

Looker of the night: Dipanwita (right) cut a pretty picture in a blue wrap dress she paired with heels and a stack of golden bangles, leaving her hair casually open.

2 lawyers become 1st same-sex couple to enter into civil union in Delaware

More than 400 people, including a U.S. senator, witnessed the first same-sex civil union in Delaware on New Year's Day.

Lawyers Lisa Goodman and Drewry Fennell were joined in the union by the Rev. Patricia Downing, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Wilmington, where the Sunday afternoon ceremony took place.

Goodman and Fennell have been partners for 14 years. Goodman is a lawyer who led the advocacy group Equality Delaware's fight for the civil union law. Fennell heads the state Criminal Justice Council and formerly led the ACLU's Delaware chapter.

U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., delivered the sermon and Lt. Gov. Matt Denns read scripture.

"We felt so lifted up by everyone who was there," Goodman said by phone as she and Fennell were riding to their home after the ceremony and reception.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed the law authorizing civil unions in May. Delaware is one of about a dozen states that allow either civil unions or marriages for same-sex couples.

Neighboring Maryland is preparing for a renewed fight over a same-sex marriage proposal, with Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley promising his full support for the measure in the coming legislative session.

In Delaware, observers of the Sunday ceremony said it went off without a hitch.

"Everything went perfect, I couldn't be happier, everything was flawless," said Ken Boulden Jr., the New Castle County Clerk of the Peace. Boulden opened his office on Sunday so that Goodman and Fennell and seven other couples could get their licenses on the first day they were available. Boulden was a guest at the Goodman-Fennell ceremony.

Calling the event a "lovefest," Boulden said the good weather meant even heaven was smiling down upon the couple.

"It was a great way to begin the new year," he said.

Downing said she has known Goodman and Fennell for about four years and that the couple crafted a service to reflect their relationship. "I'm full of pride and joy and extremely happy and excited that this could happen in Delaware," Downing said.

The couple had a choir that performed hymns and Christmas carols, one in Spanish, because the church has a Spanish-speaking congregation.

Goodman said that when the congregation gave the couple a standing ovation after the union was pronounced, "I was afraid to turn around because I was afraid I might cry."

Google Pulls 'Official' Siri App From Android Market

PC World ? Google has reportedly yanked an app masquerading as Siri, Apple's voice command personal assistant software, from the Android marketplace.

The move comes amid a deluge of Siri wannabes that have invaded the Android market since Apple introduced the iPhone 4S and its innovative features.

An app called Siri for Android, made by an outfit called Official Software, appeared in the Android market on Friday and was pulled from the bazaar by Google just hours after its arrival there, according to a report by The Next Web.

Also, all other apps by Official Software disappeared from the market, as it appears that Google has pulled the software maker's account, which allows it to sell programs at the outlet.

The software company did a number of dubious things that appear to have prompted Google to act against the firm.

For example, it used Apple's Siri icon for the Official Software Android app. The word "official" was used in a way to make the app look like it was a true clone of the Apple app. When the Siri icon was tapped, all Official Software's app did was load Google's own voice command software, Voice Actions.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened.

A French developer has even found a way to tap into Apple's servers to enable software running on other mobile phone platforms to duplicate Siri's feats, although the legality of such a move would be doubtful.

A search for "Siri" on the Android Market by PCWorld revealed 131 hits, but less than a handful of the programs had more than 10,000 downloads. They were Vlingo Virtual Assistant (32,328 downloads), Iris (20,309), Skyvi (19,444) and Speaktoit Assistant (11,600).

While the Android world has been laboring hard to emulate Siri's functionality since Apple pulled the wraps off it, it hasn't quite made it there yet, according to PC World's Ed Albro.

"I've concluded that you can find decent virtual help on an Android phone, but the assistants available likely won't be as smooth and capable as Siri," he wrote.

He described Siri as the classic executive secretary -- "always well-dressed and possessed of an elephant's memory and a dry wit."

Belarus limits use of 'foreign' websites, while Kuala Lumpur mandates WiFi in eateries

Talk about polar opposites. In an update posted to the Library of Congress, we're told that the Republic of Belarus will begin fining citizens that host domestic sites on "foreign" domains. Crazy? Definitely, but no less true. Starting later this week, any Belarusian not registered as an entrepreneur may use "only domestic internet domains for providing online services, conducting sales, or exchanging email messages." According to the interpretation, it "appears that business requests from Belarus cannot be served over the internet if the service provider is using online services located outside of the country," and police (as well as the secret police) are authorized to "initiate, investigate, and prosecute such violations." Wilder still, owners of internet cafes could have their entire business shut down if users are found to be accessing external sites on those networks, and for those curious, the law "may" extend to browsing within one's private home.

In a land a bit closer to the equator, it seems as if officials have their heads in a far more sensible place. Kuala Lumpur -- already home to one of the world's most lust-worthy airports and some of the most accessible / affordable mobile data plans -- will soon mandate that all new restaurants provide WiFi to their customers. And by "WiFi," we mean "access to the entire internet." According to the New Strait Times, the rule will be enforced as early as April, applying to eatery owners operating on premises larger than 120 square meters. We're told that existing owners will be forced to comply when renewing their license, and while the waves won't have to be given away for free, they'll be encouraged to charge no more than a "reasonable fee." Furthermore, the government is considering dipping into its own pockets in order to extend gratis WiFi to public facilities in the city, likely as a follow-up plan to the expiring WirelessKL contract. As if going to wander through Batu Caves and the colorful streets shown above weren't enough reason to visit Malaysia...

Farmers and others see 'fracking' as threat to thirsty South Africa land

KAROO, South Africa -- Covering much of the roughly 800 miles between Johannesburg and Cape Town, this arid expanse -- its name means "thirsty land" -- sees less rain in some parts than the Mojave Desert.

Even so, Shell and several other large energy companies hope to drill thousands of natural gas wells in the region, using a new drilling technology that can require 1 million gallons of water or more for each well. Companies will also have to find a way to dispose of all the toxic wastewater or sludge that each well produces, since the closest landfill or industrial-waste facility that can handle the waste is hundreds of miles away.

"Around here, the rain comes on legs," said Chris Hayward, 51, a brawny, dust-covered farmer in Beaufort West, quoting a Karoo saying about how rare and fleeting precipitation is in the area.

With his three skinny border collies crouching dutifully at his side, Mr. Hayward explained that he had to slaughter more than 600 of his 2,000 sheep last year because there was not enough water to go around. "If our government lets these companies touch even a drop of our water," he said, "we're ruined."

South Africa is among the growing number of countries that want to unlock previously inaccessible natural gas reserves trapped in shale, deep underground. The drilling technology -- hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," for short -- holds the promise of generating new revenue through taxes on the gas, creating thousands of jobs for one of the country's poorest regions, and fueling power plants to provide electricity to roughly 10 million South Africans who live without it.

But many sites here and on other continents being considered for drilling by oil and gas companies and by governments short of cash are in fragile areas where local officials have limited resources, political leverage or experience to ensure that the drilling is done safely.

Michael Klare, a Hampshire College professor of world security studies, said new natural gas sources from shale may lessen the geopolitical importance of nations that historically have been top gas producers, including Iran, Qatar and Russia.

The new drilling, which draws strong support from the United States government, represents a boon for U.S. companies such as Halliburton, Chesapeake Energy and ExxonMobil that have greater experience with shale gas, and therefore are likely to win many lucrative contracts abroad.

More than 30 nations, including China, India and Pakistan, are now considering fracking for natural gas or oil. The gas production surge has spurred interest in building pipelines and terminals that liquefy the fuel, so it can be shipped to far-flung markets.

"The big problem is that all the excitement around shale gas -- most of it fostered by the U.S. -- has also led some countries, especially in the developing world, to take a drill-first, figure-out-regulations-later attitude," said Mr. Klare, who has written extensively about the way energy policies affect global security.

In the United States, where the water-intensive drilling technique of fracking was invented, the government is taking a lead role in supporting dissemination of the technology abroad. Over the last three years, President Barack Obama has promoted shale gas during visits to China, India and Poland.

The U.S. Geological Survey has offered training and technology to geologists exploring shale gas in Europe. The State Department's Global Shale Gas Initiative, begun in 2010, has been advising many foreign countries on fracking. It has organized a half-dozen trips this year for foreign officials to meet with U.S. energy experts and visit U.S. drilling sites.

Some economists and environmentalists say that while governments of poorer countries may benefit from new tax revenues and jobs, they may not be paying enough attention to environmental risks of drilling. They also note that local residents -- who bear the brunt of air pollution, potential water contamination from spills or underground seepage, and truck traffic tied with drilling -- may see few benefits.

Apple lead designer Jonathan Ive knighted for the New Year, how's your 2012 looking?

Apple Senior VP Jonathan (or Jony) Ive has been credited with fueling the company's resurgence alongside Steve Jobs with products like the iMac, iPhone and iPad, and for these successes has been made a Knight Commander of the British Empire as a part of the New Year's Honour's List. Aside from having a much better NYE celebration than yours, he'll be tapped on the shoulders by the Queen's sword (we'll see if he can make it through the ceremony without suggesting some tweaks for better balance and usability -- you can see his passion above as he eats an invisible sandwich pontificates about new iMacs) and that will forever be Sir Jony to you, commoner. It's a bump up from his previous title of Commander of the British Empire, and a full circle, as he noted benefiting from a "wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making" in a statement.
