Flip-Flops aren't the problem, Shoes are - Aspire Fitness & Health

The negatives of wearing flip-flops can be found all over the internet. Anti-Sandal prophets claim they don?t keep your foot in place, leading to tumbles, twisted ankles, and broken bones. They say shoes should be flexing consistently where your foot bends and sandals bend too much or not at all. They say sandals rub as the wearer walks, creating friction that can lead to blisters.? They say the thin layer or rubber will protect you from stones or glass, but not nails. In an article on CNN which states the above opinions, it also recommends that sandal wearers purchase sandals with deep heel cups, high arch support, and comfortable toe support (1). Here is my argument on the complete and utterly contrary option to be as minimalist as possible, wearing barefoot-like shoes only when necessary, sandals when desired, and barefoot as much as humanly possible.

Many physicians and specialists love to blame improper footwear (or lack of footwear) on the most common foot injuries and conditions. Boldly I will say this; many of them are the real problem. Homo sapiens (aka humans) reached anatomical modernity about 200,000 years ago and have been exhibiting full behavioral modernity for around 50,000 years (2). The oldest discovered sandals were found in Fort Rock Cave, Oregon with carbon dating of the bark indicating an age of at least 10,000 years old (3). Furthermore, athletic shoes haven?t been around for nearly as long. The first athletic shoes had a canvas upper and rubber shoe, developed in the 1830s (4). Modern sneakers, with high heel to toe drops, plenty of support, and excessive padding weren?t even developed until the 1960?s. Doing some math there, that gives humans over 190,000 years of anatomical modernity without any form of shoe or sandal support or protection. The incredible evolution of the foot that must have occurred during that amount of time is one of the most extraordinary traits humans possess. Standing on two feet is what helped humans evolve greater intellectual thinking, reasoning, and mental ability than any other creature on planet earth. Why are we now using this intellect to over think the power of natural selection by conditioning individuals that a world of shoes and support is the answer?

According to a survey released by the Institute of Preventative Foot Health (IPFH), their National Foot Health Assessment for 2012 concluded some saddening results. They found 17% of Americans had ?fair to poor? foot health, with 78% of Americans having one or more of the foot issues listed in the survey (5). The most common injuries were (in order from most common to least common): Ankle Sprains, Blisters, Calluses, Foot Fatigue, and Cracked Skin. If one were to go to a physician or podiatrist, I can almost guarantee (unless injury was sustained by a direct cause) the source of injury stated by the health professional would be relating to footwear. Sandals and improperly fitting footwear are the go to solution in healthcare. Especially with high arches or flat feet, a custom (or over-the-counter) orthotic will be prescribed.

No conclusive scientific evidence has ever proven that any form of insole is actually beneficial to the foot or helps prevent or correct injuries/improper foot alignment. To be fair, no conclusive evidence has shown being barefoot or any other type of footwear helps either. What I will do here is let you make your own opinion and use your own reasoning to create an answer for yourself.

It is a fact that exercise and resistance training helps the body prevent illness, disease, and injury. We workout our whole body, yet consistently neglect our feet. Foot strength is simply not a priority. Yet, these are the very things we base the portability and sustainability of our lives upon. By inserting out feet into these things called shoes, we are forgetting all about them. Shoes and orthotics support our feet themselves, leaving our feet to become lazy and dependent on them. On the contrary, we should be strengthening our feet, providing a foot that supports itself without the need of a crutch. An example I see is when older individuals stop walking for themselves, their lives quickly deteriorate. They stop using the muscles and joints in their lower body, thus muscles atrophy and joint strength diminishes. The same goes for your feet. By not using our feet, rather putting them into a tight fitting padded box, we are neglecting out main mode of transportation and support. Our feet are the roots of our human tree and if a tree didn?t have roots it would fall over. Be like a tree and expand your roots, strengthen your roots, and add a natural sustainability to your life.

Going back to some of the most common injuries that the IPFH found, many of these may actually be able to be prevented by being barefoot (or the lesser alternative of minimalist footwear).? The most common injury was ankle sprains, typically caused by the rapid shifting movement when your foot is planted. This shifting most often occurs when the ankle rolls outward and foot turns inward (6). Being barefoot could decrease the incidence of this by improved reaction time caused by better sensation of the mechanoreceptors on the feet, improved ankle strength, and the foot being lower to the ground. Blisters and calluses are often caused by footwear because of repeatedly being rubbed. Being barefoot will cause blisters as well. Luckily, after a short amount of time, blisters will form calluses ? in this case a good thing. Calluses are just a build-up of hard skin, which are normal to have to begin with. Calluses will lead to stronger skin on the bottom of the foot and natural protection of the elements.? Finally, Athlete?s Foot and Foot Fatigue round out the top 5 most common foot injuries. Here, being barefoot can be of great help. Although Athlete?s Foot is caused by being barefoot in warm, wet places, the fungus associated with the issue only grows while your feet are in your shoes with no air flow. This fungal skin infection simply cannot grow or reproduce in an airy, cool environment such as that while barefoot or in sandals. Foot fatigue is probably the easiest one here to fix by being barefoot or wearing minimalist footwear. The solution is straightforward: strengthen your feet. You can do foot strengthening exercises or by not wearing shoes your feet will be able to strengthen naturally.

A popular argument for cushiony shoes are that because of our hard packed pavement and concrete jungle we live in, our feet need the support and cushioning on these surfaces that shoes provide. I disagree completely solely on the fact that if our ancestors could survive walking and running on densely packed earth, warm surface temperatures, and uneven terrain complete with pebbles and stones, I can walk on a smooth side walk barefoot any day. Moreover, the obstructions like glass and nails cover the earth that many suggest we need shoes for to protect against, I provide you with a solution: look where you are walking with those wonderful things we call eyes to avoid dangerous objects in your path. And honestly, how many nails are sticking upward in the streets ready to penetrate your foot? With more and more shoe companies advertising a barefoot-like, minimalist, flexible shoe most like our bare feet, why do we need something almost as good as being barefoot when we could just? I don?t know? be barefoot?

Always remember, barefoot is best, flexible sandals can help protect feet from jagged and rough ground, and minimalist shoes are a great option for them when the above aren?t allowed.

When Do We Become Truly Conscious?

120831_SCI_ultraSoundChild Left: An ultrasound of the author's daughter at 20 weeks. Right: Lalana, the author's daughter, at age 2.

Courtesy Daniel Bor.

It is easy to view consciousness as a kind of magic. In religion it is represented by the mysterious soul, and in science the concept of consciousness at first appears quite alien. But many fields, such as the study of what distinguishes life from nonlife, had their earlier magical states eroded by careful scientific study. Consciousness is in the midst of a similar revolution.

The investigation of our own awareness is a blossoming scientific field, where experiments are illuminating exciting details about this most intimate of scientific subjects. In my book The Ravenous Brain, I describe the latest consciousness science and how we are closing in on establishing a consciousness meter?a way to measure levels of awareness in any being that may be able to experience the world. Consciousness is in many ways the most important question remaining for science.

But the nature of consciousness is not just a vital question for science; it?s also the source of some of society?s thorniest, most fundamental ethical dilemmas.

On a personal level, consciousness is where the meaning to life resides. All the moments that matter to us, from falling in love to seeing our child?s first smile, to that perfect holiday surrounded by snow-capped mountains, are obviously conscious events. If none of these events were conscious, if we weren?t conscious to experience them, we?d hardly consider ourselves alive?at least not in any way that matters.

Whether I?m reveling in a glowing pleasure or even if I?m enduring a sharp sadness, I always sense that behind everything there is the privilege and passion of experience. Our consciousness is the essence of who we perceive ourselves to be. It is the citadel for our senses, the melting pot of thoughts, the welcoming home for every emotion that pricks or placates us. For us, consciousness simply is the currency of life.

Although some philosophers and scientists suspect that consciousness is a pointless side effect of cognitive processes, I believe the opposite: that our consciousness might indeed be responsible for our greatest intellectual achievements in both the arts and sciences. Whether our creativity and insight originates in our unconscious mind or not (I believe that the role of the unconscious has been overestimated), at the very least, our consciousness is the conduit to inspect these gems of inspiration and the driving force for turning them into reality.

It is not surprising, therefore, that questions about consciousness lie at the heart of many of our most fundamental ethical debates, one of which is abortion and the right to life. This is an appropriate point for me to play my proud father card and slip in a couple of pictures of my daughter, Lalana. The ultrasound was taken halfway through pregnancy, at 20 weeks. Soon after this scan, we could clearly feel her kicking.

The second image is a recent photo of her. As a 2-year-old, Lalana runs around everywhere and has a vocabulary of a few hundred words. She can convey events to us that happened days or weeks before, usually because she is still so excited about them. She can also store wishes for the future. For instance, we might tell her offhand that when we get home, we?ll play with making bubbles. Hours later, as soon as she enters the house, she?ll run straight to the shelf with the bubble bottle and scream, ?Bubbu! Bubbu!? She has a strong set of loves and hates, and her emotionally sensitive, passionate, cheeky, disturbingly stubborn personality is already pronounced.

PastBook Raises $250K To Help Preserve Online Memories, Instagrammers First In Line

Screen Shot 2012-09-03 at 16.36.31Some of our most precious memories exist online-only, in the form of photographs scattered across various and disparate social networks. And when the time comes to share those memories with grandchildren... Well, good luck with that. It's a problem that PastBook, a startup currently based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, as part of the RockStart.Accelerator program, wants to tackle head-on with a service that makes it easy to consolidate and preserve those photographic memories both online and off-line. Today, the company is announcing a $250k seed financing round from Noro Venture Capital, Vidoze BV and a group of undisclosed angel investors. The funding comes in the form of a convertible note and follows an earlier investment of ?15k (plus office space and mentoring) from RockStart as part of PastBook being accepted into its program.

Pakistan imam held in 'blasphemy girl' case

A Pakistani cleric who accused a young Christian girl of blasphemy in a case that sparked international concern was remanded in custody Sunday on suspicion of evidence-tampering and desecrating the Koran.

The girl, Rimsha, has been held in prison since being arrested in the poor Islamabad suburb of Mehrabad more than two weeks ago accused of burning papers containing verses from the Koran, in breach of Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws.

A medical report last week said she had a mental age of less than 14 and her case has prompted concern among Western governments and anger from rights groups who say Pakistan's strict blasphemy legislation is often abused to settle personal scores.

Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, the imam of the mosque in Rimsha's area, who first gave police the burned papers as evidence against her, was detained by police on Saturday evening.

"The imam was arrested after his deputy Maulvi Zubair and two others told a magistrate he added pages from the Koran to the burnt pages brought to him by a witness," police investigator Munir Hussain Jaffri said.

Zubair and the two others, Mohammad Shahzad and Awais Ahmed, said they had urged Chishti not to interfere with the papers, Jaffri said.

"They protested that he should not add something to the evidence and he should give the evidence to the police as he got it and should not do this," Jaffri said.

"But they said Chishti said, 'You know this is the only way to expel the Christians from this area.'"

On August 24 Chishti told AFP he thought Rimsha had burned the pages deliberately as part of a Christian "conspiracy" to insult Muslims, and said action should have been taken sooner to stop what he called their "anti-Islam activities" in Mehrabad.

Jaffri said the cleric was arrested at his home on Saturday under the blasphemy law.

"By putting these pages in the ashes he also committed desecration of the Holy Koran and he is being charged with blasphemy," he said.

Rimsha's lawyer Tahir Naveed Chaudhry said the case against her was fatally flawed.

"This development has created doubts and under the law, the benefit of the doubt is always given to the accused," he told AFP.

"Now it has been fully proven that it was a conspiracy. We want that Rimsha should be acquitted immediately."

Chishti, who arrived at court on Sunday blindfolded and handcuffed and guarded by armed police commandos, was remanded in custody for 14 days and will be held at the same jail as Rimsha.

Speaking to reporters, Chishti said the allegations against him were "concocted".

Rao Abdur Raheem, the lawyer for Rimsha's accuser, her neighbour Hammad Malik, said the development was intended to "spoil" his case and he accused the authorities of interfering.

"They are pressurising the complainants and witnesses to facilitate the bail of Rimsha," he told the court.

"They are making threats on behalf of the people sitting in the president's house."

A medical report earlier this week said Rimsha appeared to be around 14 years old, which would make her a minor, and had a mental age below her true age, but the court has yet to decide whether to accept the assessment.

Some reports have said Rimsha has Down's Syndrome.

She is being held in a high-security jail in Islamabad's twin city Rawalpindi and on Friday a judge extended her remand for another two weeks.

On Sunday around 150 Christians and rights activists held a protest march in Rawalpindi calling for Rimsha's release.

Blasphemy is a very sensitive subject in the Pakistan, where 97 percent of the 180 million population are Muslims, and allegations of insulting Islam or the Prophet Mohammed often prompt a furious public reaction.

Jaguars RB Jones-Drew ends 38-day holdout, reports

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Maurice Jones-Drew remains as passionate as ever about his value.

So when the Jacksonville Jaguars running back ended his 38-day holdout Sunday ? without a new contract ? he had no apologies, no regrets and no concerns about his standing with the franchise.

"I'm in a good place," he said. "I did something I felt was right, and I'm always going to feel right. I'm not going to feel wrong for what I did it at all. And that's why I can come back and not have a negative attitude. I think if you regret things, you're going to come back salty, be a distraction, things like that.

"I don't feel that way 'cause what I did was right. No one can tell me it was wrong. Not one person here can tell me what I did was wrong."

Jones-Drew arrived at the team facility Sunday morning, chatted with teammates and then had a 40-minute conversation with coach Mike Mularkey.

Later, he spent nearly half an hour answering questions about his holdout, even getting to a point where he told reporters to "make sure we all get this out of the way because I'm done after this."

"This is the last talk about the whole contract situation," he said. "We're going to more forward to football after this."

Jones-Drew considered skipping games, missing paychecks and causing an even bigger distraction for the team. Ultimately, though, he opted to report a week before the season opener. Jacksonville plays at Minnesota next Sunday.

"It really wasn't about budging," said Jones-Drew, who took a conditioning test later in the day. "For me, it got to the point where I wasn't going to be traded. Obviously, they weren't going to pay me. I could have easily sat out until Week 10, come back and been a distraction. It wasn't about that. I'm not going to come back and distract guys from playing the game the right way."

The NFL's leading rusher in 2011, Jones-Drew skipped the team's entire offseason schedule in what became a nasty contract dispute.

Mularkey can fine MJD up to $30,000 a day ? plus $60,000 for a three-day, mandatory minicamp in June ? meaning the total tab could end up being $1.2 million. Jones-Drew declined to reveal what he and Mularkey discussed regarding the potential fine.

Jones-Drew is scheduled to make $4.45 million in 2012 and $4.95 million next year.

He wanted to renegotiate the final two years of a five-year, $31 million deal that paid him nearly $22 million the last three seasons. Owner Shad Khan and general manager Gene Smith refused, not wanting to set a precedent of paying players in the middle of lucrative deals.

Things got tense after Khan said publicly that Jones-Drew's absence "doesn't even move the needle." Khan also said his message to Jones-Drew is the "train's leaving the station. Run, get on it."

Those comments didn't sit well with Jones-Drew, who would have accepted a trade if it meant getting a new deal.

"I was disappointed about the comments," Jones-Drew said. "I expect you guys or people outside the organization to make those comments like that. But when you do get it inside the organization, with how hard we work, with the time you put in through the offseason, the time you spend away from your family here at the facility, you expect a little more appreciation."

Khan welcomed Jones-Drew aboard Sunday.

"The Jaguars are a better football team today than we were yesterday, and now our entire franchise can move forward together and as one," Khan said in a statement. "Nothing more needs to be said. "

Coming off a career year, Jones-Drew wanted to be one of the NFL's highest-paid backs. His average salary per year ranks behind Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, Tennessee's Chris Johnson, Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy, Houston's Arian Foster, St. Louis' Steven Jackson, Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Seattle's Marshawn Lynch.

The 27-year-old Jones-Drew signed his deal in 2009, before rushing for at least 1,300 yards in three consecutive seasons. He had a league-best 1,606 yards on the ground in 2011. Not only has he seemingly outperformed his contract, Jones-Drew is the face of the franchise and probably the only player on the roster known outside small-market Jacksonville.

"My production spoke for itself," he said. "At the end of the day, that's how it played out. I read some articles that said there's no way you can outperform a contract. That's a lie."

The Jaguars, though, felt like they paid him based on the expectation that he would flourish as a starter after spending the first three years of his career splitting carries with Fred Taylor. The team doesn't want to pay a running back into his 30s, especially one who takes as many pounding hits as Jones-Drew does. Plus, the Jaguars have missed the playoffs in each of his three seasons as the starter.

"I knew it was going to be a difficult situation," Jones-Drew said. "I had two years left. But the way I was raised, the way I grew up, is if you believe something you fight for it. You fight for whatever you believe. My production stated something. I fought for it, plain and simple.

"Yes, it went into a holdout and all these different things. At the end of the day, that's what it was about: my production and my value. I haven't stopped fighting. I'm going to come out and play."

But will playing get Jones-Drew a new contract? Or will MJD and the Jaguars be in a similar position next year?

"We're over it," he said. "It's solved for the time being and we're ready to move on."
