Hurricane Sandy inspires home cooking - Mother Nature Network

Greetings from the front end of Hurricane Sandy. Here in South Jersey, the rains started in earnest sometime in the middle of the night, but we?re not expected to get the brunt of the storm until much later tonight. School is cancelled for the next two days, and I slept until an indulgent 9 a.m. this morning. I was very happy to still have power this morning when we woke up. There are power outages just 15 minutes south of me.

The big talk on Facebook yesterday was storm preparation, and I asked my friends what they were stocking up on or cooking to prepare for Sandy. It?s no surprise that comfort foods came up a lot. Food can comfort, and when people are worried impending harm to themselves and their loved ones, destruction of property, and an interruption to their normal routines, they turn to favorite foods to help them get through it.

What is everyone cooking? Here?s a roundup:

?

  • Slow cooker favorites ? Chicken and pork cooked for pulled meat sandwiches as well as roast beef and stews were mentioned by several people. Big batches of foods like those that can be reheated on gas stoves if the electricity goes out are a great idea.

  • Soups ? Chicken noodle, of course, but also soups like lentil with sausage, butternut squash, and broccoli cheddar are going to get families through the next couple of days.

  • Chili ? I needed to buy chili powder the other week, and it was all sold out. Last week, I was able to get it, but I took the last two jars off the shelf. It?s obviously chili season anyway, but a good pot of chili cooking on the stove ? with or without meat ? will certainly be comforting during a storm.

  • Pasta, meatballs and gravy ? There were lots of pasta dishes being baked and lots of meatballs and homemade gravy (sauce) making homes smell wonderful yesterday.

  • Hardboiled eggs ? This is something I wouldn?t have thought of, but several people mentioned they were hard boiling eggs so if the power went out, they?d have them ready for eating or making egg salad.

  • One-offs ? Chicken schnitzel sandwiches with cole slaw, spare ribs, Cornish game hens, and smothered pork chops ? most of these dishes made with mashed potatoes on the side ? were in my friends? ovens yesterday.

  • Baked goods ? Brownies and cookies topped the list, but MNN?s family blogger Jenn was baking her daughter?s birthday cake a couple days early just in case she doesn?t have power tomorrow on her birthday.
  • Me - I roasted a chicken yesterday. We had a wonderful dinner last night of chicken and gravy, corn bread, mashed potatoes and broccoli. Today, I have lots of leftover chicken to make soup if I we still have power or chicken salad if the power goes out.

How about stocking up? Most people realize that at some point they might not have the ability to cook, so they are also stocking up on non-perishables.

  • Water

  • Peanut butter

  • Raw fruits and vegetables

  • Bread

  • Coffee

  • Granola bars

  • Pizza (one friend had several pizzas delivered and was counting on room temperature leftovers lasting a day or two if the power went out)

  • Wine, beer, alcohol and mixers ? these were the most mentioned items of all!

My friends and neighbors are certainly well prepared to eat (and drink) their way through the storm, but I want to mention that it?s not just food that people were sharing yesterday on Facebook. They were also sharing support. I saw so many mentions of open-ended offers to help anyone who needed it including people offering up their homes for anyone being evacuated from the coastal regions. I also saw a lot of prayers and well wishes.

If you?re in the path of Sandy, I hope you stay dry, safe and warm.

What Happened to the 56 Men Who Signed the Declaration of ...

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Continental Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from the wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunse and thier sacred honor. What kind of men were they?

Twenty four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept form the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. he served in the Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his head quaters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. HIs fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a brken heart.

Norris and LIvingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: For the support fo this declaration with firm reliance on the protecton of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revoutionary War. We didn't fight just the British, we were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't. So take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots, it is not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember freedom is never free! It's time we get the word out there that patriotism is not a sin and the Forth of July has more to it than beer, picnics and baseball games.

East Coast grinds to a halt as superstorm nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard's largest cities Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet tall.

Sandy strengthened before dawn and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York ? putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. About 2 to 3 feet of snow were even forecast for mountainous parts of West Virginia.

The tempest could endanger up to 50 million people for days.

Many workers planned to stay home Monday as subways, buses and trains shut down across the region under the threat of flooding that could inundate tracks and tunnels. Airports also closed, and authorities warned that the time for evacuation was running out or already past. Utilities brought in extra crews, anticipating widespread power failures.

The center of the storm was positioned to come ashore Monday night in New Jersey, meaning the worst of the surge could be in the northern part of that state and in New York City and on Long Island. Higher tides brought by a full moon compounded the threat to the metropolitan area of about 20 million people.

"This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, N.J., where the city's 12 casinos shut down for only the fourth time ever.

"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., with the same wood he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, 'Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food.'"

President Barack Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."

Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial center.

Major U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The NYSE closed on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. The United Nations also shut down and canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

New York called off school Monday for the city's 1.1 million students and announced it would suspend all train, bus and subway service Sunday night. More than 5 million riders a day depend on the transit system.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney reshuffled campaign plans as the storm approached.

In Virginia, one of the most competitive states, election officials eased absentee voting requirements for those affected by the storm. Early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 5 a.m. Monday, it was centered about 385 miles south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 15 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an unusual 175 miles from its center.

Gale-force winds blew overnight over coastal North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and coastal New Jersey.

Sandy was expected to hook inland Monday, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic, and then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York state.

Forecasters said the combination could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge of 4 to 11 feet across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. The storm could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains. Those cities shut down their schools, as did Boston. Non-essential government offices closed in the nation's capital.

Pennsylvania's largest utilities brought in hundreds of line and tree-trimming crews in anticipation of several days of power failures or intentional shutdowns in areas with heavy flooding.

In New Jersey, where utilities were widely criticized last year for slow responses after the remnants of storms Irene and Lee, authorities promised a better performance. Bob Hanna, president of the state's Board of Public Utilities, noted that this storm has the potential to threaten even large transmission lines.

Nearly 100 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., a replica of the tall ship made famous in the film "Mutiny on the Bounty" was taking on water and without propulsion with 17 people aboard, the Coast Guard said. Officials were monitoring the situation early Monday.

On Sunday evening in Rehoboth, Del., only a few cars rolled along Route 1, an artery that is often bumper-to-bumper in summer.

"We were told to get the heck out. I was going to stay, but it's better to be safe than sorry," said Hugh Phillips, who was one of the first in line when a Red Cross shelter opened Sunday afternoon in neighboring Lewes.

Despite the dire warnings, some refused to budge.

Jonas Clark of Manchester Township, N.J. ? right in Sandy's projected path ? stood outside a convenience store, calmly sipping a coffee and wondering why people were working themselves "into a tizzy."

"I've seen a lot of major storms in my time, and there's nothing you can do but take reasonable precautions and ride out things the best you can," said Clark, 73.

The storm threatened to drench areas still recovering from last year's deluges.

In Pompton Lakes, N.J., where record flooding inundated homes a year ago, some residents were already putting belongings out near the curb in advance of the storm.

"They're figuring, divide and conquer," said resident Kevin Gogots. "They'll take the stuff they want to save and put the rest out. Of course, if the street floods again, we'll just have things floating around."

I have seen people receive a fast return on their investment through recruitment when their businesses first started followed by a business flat line, no sales and no new team members. I have seen others reach a comfortable plateau with achieving the optimal levels of the company. Yes there are those who accomplish much in the direct marketing business, they are the ones who dedicate full time plus hours to marketing their products and promoting? the company.

I am learning, still, to distinguish from the people who manipulate the truth and the actually company values.? A basic presentation may lack flair, jokes and cute little antidotes, however, if you want to begin start your own business through direct marketing then all you need is the facts.

There is no such thing as legal ?fast cash? a business requires work.? Most direct marketing businesses present a way to receive a return on your initial investment through various bonus programs; some people do not earn the bonus (more on that later). You can earn a substantial size income if you follow the guidelines followed by the company. ?What you should be looking for is a way you can earn a consistent and constant flow of income.

I did not earn the bonuses the business offered because I did not fully understand the business when I handed over my hard earned money.? When an individual first enters the direct marketing business he is dependent on friends and family to jump-start the business, my friends and family were not as supportive thus I am totally dependent on strangers .? In order for the bonus programs to work you must know people who will purchase your products no questions asked and or be able to afford to join your team.? ?Not earning the bonus is not a deal breaker if you are focused on a profitable business more so than fast cash. Bonuses are incentives the company gives to keep the business partners encouraged.

To have a successful business you must be:

  • REALISTIC- Know the pros and cons of the business. Listen to the testimonies of those who did not succeed; reasons for failure may be why you fail testimonies of success can motivate you to succeed.
  • HONEST: If you have to lie, exaggerate or misrepresent the truth to get people into your business you are going to develop a team of liars- people you will not be able to trust. ?As I watch various business owners struggle to keep their team from falling apart I cannot help but think it is because they chose to lay a business foundation of deception.
  • COMMITTED- Start with the guidelines the company presented and continue using those guidelines. ?Do not try to take short cuts and do not quit. Go all in or do not get in.
  • CONSISTENT -Once you have mastered the tools for success continue doing so. Develop positive healthy patterns of business that you can maintain. Do not get locked in to ideas that may hinder your business.
  • ENJOYABLE: If you are not having fun your business will be just another job. Find time to laugh and surround yourself with business partners who want to have fun.
  • BELIEVE: We do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13) and not of ourselves (Ephesians 2:7-9). Faith in God and your time to fellowship with Him must be a priority (Matthew 6:33)

Former pop star Gary Glitter arrested

LONDON (Reuters) - One-time pop star Gary Glitter was arrested on Sunday as part of an investigation into allegations of child sex abuse by the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, the BBC said.

It was the first arrest to be reported in a scandal that has already damaged the reputation of the publicly-funded BBC and the legacy of Savile, a former DJ who was one of the broadcaster's top show hosts and a dedicated charity fundraiser.

The head of the BBC's governing body said on Sunday the broadcaster's reputation was on the line, and promised to get to the bottom of the scandal.

A police statement said a man in his 60s had been picked up just after 7 am British Time on suspicion of sexual offences in the investigation into "Savile and others". The statement did not name the man and a spokesman declined further comment.

The BBC and Sky News identified the man picked up from his London home as Glitter, a 68-year-old who was popular as a glam-rock singer in the 1970s. Footage on both broadcasters showed Glitter, who was not handcuffed, leaving an apartment in central London and being driven away.

Glitter, born Paul Gadd, shot to fame in the early 1970s with the hit "Rock and Roll". He has long been dogged by child sex accusations. He was convicted of abusing two girls in Vietnam in 2006 and has been jailed in that country.

Allegations that Savile sexually abused young girls for decades first emerged in an expose on the TV channel ITV. Since then, police say some 300 victims had come forward.

The victims' allegations include claims from one woman that she had seen Glitter having sex with an underage girl in Savile's BBC dressing room while Savile abused another girl.

BLIND EYE?

The scandal has raised troubling questions about the BBC's management and its workplace culture in the past. Revelations that an investigation by Newsnight, the BBC's flagship TV news show, was shelved last December led to claims bosses at the broadcaster knew about the allegations but kept quiet.

"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality?" asked Chris Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust which oversees the broadcaster, writing in the Mail on Sunday.

The Sunday Times said the office of former BBC director Mark Thompson was alerted about the allegations twice, in May and September. Thompson is poised to take over as chief executive of the New York Times, and the Sunday Times quoted his spokesman as saying Thompson had not been told about the allegations on either occasion.

Thompson has told Reuters that he did not know about the nature of the investigation by the Newsnight programme into Savile, and had no involvement in the decision to axe the report.

The BBC said on its website on Sunday that "Thompson has said the first time he had been made aware of claims that Savile had committed serious crimes and that some had taken place while the entertainer was working at the BBC was after he stepped down as director general".

The broadcaster has announced two investigations as a result of the scandal, and Patten promised full cooperation.

"The BBC's reputation is on the line," he wrote. "The BBC must tell the truth and face up to the truth about itself, however terrible."

When Savile died in October last year aged 84, his gold coffin went on public display and he was lauded as a "national treasure" who had raised millions of pounds for good causes.

A year later, police describe him as "undoubtedly" one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, and the Vatican said a papal knighthood given to Savile decades ago for his charity work "should not have been bestowed".

Savile's family said it was in despair over the allegations and offered its "deepest sympathy" to abuse victims. It also said it had decided to remove the headstone on Savile's grave and destroy it to avoid it becoming a target for vandals.
