Jason Burton has made a home for himself - OregonLive.com

ADDIS ABABA -- It's lunchtime at the Yehiwot Reay compound, in the Megenagna District of Ethiopia's sprawling capital city, and a mob of gangly boys scrambles for seats at a wooden table. They dive into plates of injera and shiro, 12 hands ripping at the food. The room buzzes with dinner-table chatter in three languages.

They are as young as six and as old as 20 -- though most can only guess at their age. And like boys anywhere, they push and scrap, argue and pout.

One of the youngest, Tareku, plays music videos on a laptop computer, a technological incongruity in this meager brick and plaster home. The skin on his forearm is cracked and disfigured -- an eight-inch sleeve of scars. He glances away from the screen and to his arm. "Fire," he explains.

Jason Burton does his best to piece together the painful facts of the lives once lived by these boys, who have come to him off the streets of one of the world's poorest cities. Some have been abandoned. Others came from far-off villages intending to support the families they left behind.

Now they are part of Burton's family. And like families everywhere, this one has its struggles. But after five years, Burton can't walk away -- even though he's put many aspects of his own life on hold.

As lunch winds down, the 25-year-old Hillsboro native looks across the table at his motley gang.

"It's time to get to work," he says.

Idleness is an enemy here. Some of the boys were addicted to khat, a mild narcotic that is cheap and popular in Ethiopia. Others have struggled with alcoholism. So Burton does his best to keep them busy with schoolwork, cooking and other chores. When they have free time they kick a tattered soccer ball around the yard.

Two boys and a mission
Soon after he graduated from Pioneer Heritage Academy -- a private Christian school in Portland -- in 2005, Burton came to Ethiopia, intending to volunteer for eight months at the Mother Teresa Hospital for the poor. After that, he assumed, he would have a little time to snowboard at Mt. Hood before leaving on a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Then he met two teenage street boys. And they became his mission.

Berhanu had left his village after the death of his father, hoping to find work in the city to support his mother and brothers. At the time he met Burton, Berhanu was staying overnight with other homeless youth by a church. At night he would pull a big T-shirt over his knees and curl up against a wall. One night, as he drifted to sleep, he fell and sliced his brow. When he met Burton at the hospital, Berhanu's eye was swollen shut and the infected area had ballooned to the size of grapefruit.

Masha was suffering from chronic stomach ulcers that made it difficult for him to eat. A glucose IV at the hospital had kept him alive, but Masha's problems were more than sickness. After the deaths of his parents, he had moved in with relatives. But they feared the boy was cursed and turned him out.

"I knew immediately that I had to do something that lessened that sort of pain," Burton says, "even if just for a few people."

When his eight-month visa expired, Burton returned to the United States. But Masha and Berhanu never left his thoughts. Ted Burton says his son spent hours reading U.N. reports on homeless youth and studies detailing the challenges nongovernment organizations face in developing countries.

"As a parent I kept saying, 'No. There's just too much war, too much famine, too much danger,'" Ted Burton recalls. "I said, 'Pick a different place; there's street kids all over.'"

But Jason Burton was determined. Soon he was back in Addis, where he rented a small home to share with the boys. And it wasn't long before other boys started coming for help.

"Usually how it worked was they had medical needs," Burton says. "That's how things started happening -- when boys who we'd known before started having little emergencies and saying, 'Can you help?'"

Today, 20 boys live in the home called Yehiwot Reay, which means "Vision of Life."

"It's more like a family rather than an organization, to be honest," he says.

Family matters
It's a big family, but Burton -- whose family in Oregon is 15 strong -- is used to that. That's where he learned the patience it takes to do this sort of work, he says.

As the years have gone by, though, Burton has begun to think more about starting his own family. He refuses to abandon the boys, but he thinks often of college, work and marriage.

"I knew there would be challenges," he says, "but I guess I didn't expect so many challenges."

He's largely supporting the boys with his own savings right now. He says he will be able to keep the program going for the next year. The four oldest boys have offered to get jobs to help pay the expenses of the home, which costs about $2,000 a month to operate.

Jote, 18, says it only makes sense, given the way Burton cared for him and his 12-year-old brother after their parents died of AIDS. "I learned from him what love means," he says.

In a nation where the per-capita income is slightly more than $1,000 a year, though, it's unlikely the boys could ever make enough to support the home by themselves.

Burton wonders, sometimes, what would have become of him if he had not been drawn back to Addis.

Some people accuse him of being some sort of Peter Pan -- the leader of a band of lost boys in a faraway world. But while this may be his Never Land, for now he feels it is where he needs to be.

His father agrees.

"I can see where he's happiest, and he definitely belongs there," Ted Burton says. "There's real joy and inner meaning to his life in Ethiopia, and that's not something I know how to replace for him here."

"But," he says after a contemplative pause, "we sure do miss him."

Back in Yehiwot Reay, Jason Burton gently chides six-year-old Kufa, who has missed his first day of summer school.

"I didn't see you go, Kufa," Burton says.

Burton holds the boy's gaze, prodding him to admit he was on Bole Road, his old stomping grounds. After a while the boy shrugs and turns away.

Burton holds no grudge.

"It's a struggle, especially for the ones that have been on the street for more than a year," he explains, noting that drug addictions are especially hard to break.

He reaches down to touch Kufa's hair.

"We're all human," he says. "Just do your best -- that's all you can do."

After Sandy, a desperate search for power

As New York slowly comes back to life, it's electrical power that divides the haves and have-nots. Gridlock also remains a concern, but subway service is slowly beginning to resume and the New York Marathon is still slated to go forward. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

NEW YORK?-- Days after the country?s most densely populated region was brought to its knees by Superstorm Sandy, those without power were going to desperate lengths to find it.

For graphic designer Robert Romiti, that meant a three-mile march up Lower Manhattan in search of electricity to charge his iPhone. Romiti told NBC News he had walked from his apartment on South Street to the corner of 36th Street and Fifth Avenue, where a condominium tower had put out several surge protectors for passers-by. About 20 people were huddled around it.

Romiti said he?d found a similarly improvised power station six blocks to the south ? but it was fully occupied.

Some people were searching for even more juice. Widespread power outages, combined with forecasts of falling temperatures and ongoing uncertainty about when power would be restored, sparked a surge in demand for home power generators. Online sites recorded most models as ?out of stock? and home centers sold out shipments shortly after they arrived. Phone lines to dealers of permanent standby generators were jammed. Home center stores turned away customers looking for portable models.

A Home Depot in Port Chester, N.Y. sold 190 units within hours on Wednesday, according to a store employee. At another location in Nyack, N.Y., a cluster of customers gathered in the darkened store based on word that a truck was en route with more generators. A store employee created an impromptu waiting list by handing out slips of paper with hand-written numbers and explaining the rules: ?You can?t leave and come back,? she told a new arrival. ?You have to be here when your number is called.?

Across the region, more than 6 million people were without power, and many were driving miles and miles to find it.

At a Lukoil gas station in Bloomfield, N.J., about 40 cars lined up for gas Wednesday afternoon. Cesar Baez and a friend had tried five stations from Newark to Union before reaching the station, where they had already waited 90 minutes before nearing the entrance. In nearby Union, he had waited two hours before reaching the pump, only to be told the station was rationing. Baez wanted to fill his BMW to drive to Boston. ?We?re trying to get out of town,? he said. Baez did not gas up before the storm. ?That was an error,? he said.

Also in line were Eileen and Michael Minogue, from Butler, N.J., about 20 miles northwest of Bloomfield. This was their first stop because none of the stations in Butler had gas. The Minogues had been waiting 40 minutes for gas for their SUV and a generator they were using to power their home. The Minogues had been without power since Monday and had been told it wouldn?t be back until at least Monday. They were going through about two gallons of gas a day to run their generator for about 4 or 5 hours a day, mostly for their refrigerator.

For some, the scenes harken back to the fuel-shortages of the 1970s.

?Right now, there is a shortage of gas in the area because of the extraordinary demand of the few places that have electricity,? AAA Spokesperson Chris McBride told NBC News. ?Without power, even if they do have reserve gas in their storage tanks, they can?t pump it out.?

On one side of an Exxon station in Belleville, N.J., cars stretched down the street, snarling traffic.?On the other, people stood in line with gas cans in hand, grabbing as much fuel as they could for cars and generators.?

One man from Montclair, N.J., said his girlfriend's car ran out of fuel in line at another Exxon station. He offered money to people for their empty gas cans, hoping to carry away as much fuel as possible, but he didn't have any takers.?

The station's owner said the pumps would run out of fuel around 8 p.m. He said Exxon had a new shipment of gas on the way, but that it wouldn't be in time to help anyone tonight.

Improvised charging stations
New York City's?power company, Consolidated Edison Inc., said Wednesday that it had restored power to more than 160,000 of the 930,000 customers left in the dark by Hurricane Sandy. Con Ed estimated Tuesday that those served by underground electric equipment in Manhattan and Brooklyn should have their power restored within four days.?

Even without power, New Yorkers found creative ways to charge their phones and devices.?

At 10^th?Street and Avenue C, where Bill DiPaola said he saw cars floating in flood waters just a day ago, some two dozen people were huddled around a two-person bike hooked up to a generator that was charging tens of phones. DiPaola, founder of the not-yet-open Museum of Reclaimed Urban Spaces, said he had used the bike earlier to power a pump to drain the basement. He hoped he?d still be able to open the museum as planned on Nov. 17.?

Outside, two women were pedaling furiously; they had volunteered to do so in exchange for getting to charge their phones. Audrey Conway, a fashion school student whose apartment is without power or running water, said pedaling this bike was harder than the one she rides every day.

?I?m happy I can do this,? Conway said, slightly out of breath. ?Better than sitting in my apartment.??

New Yorkers found unique ways to work with limited electricity in New York on Wednesday.

At the main branch of the Montclair Public Library, where a line formed before its 10 a.m. opening,?several hundred people were using every available outlet to charge computers and cellphones, with some sprawled on floors near electrical plugs. Library staffers opened an auditorium, additional conference rooms and arranged for a branch building to open Wednesday to accommodate townspeople without electricity.

?We?re trying our best to serve the public the best we can,? said library supervisor?Dawn Quinn.

Jennifer Dwyer found a desk space at the library to work. ?I was here earlier but the Wifi was overwhelmed so I had to buy my own hot spot,? a battery-powered Internet connection, for her computer. Dwyer had lost power Monday night. ?I?m like everyone else here,? she said of her hunt for electrical power. ?At least it?s not cold.?

Driving around in a mobile hotspot of their own creation, Daymion Mardel, 38, and Angel Hernandez, 36, were out in lower Manhattan to help people charge their phones out of their car. The two photographers, who live in Harlem, where they actually do have power, set up a solar panel where they could plug in about 40 phones.

?We?re just trying to help in the small ways we can,? Mardel told NBC News. ?Some people donate money, we had the resources to do this. We know how important it is for people to have mobile phones to keep in touch.? ?

BP raises dividend as Q3 profit swells 5 percent

LONDON (AP) ? Oil company BP is rewarding long-suffering shareholders with a substantial dividend increase just days after it sold a stake in a Russian joint venture for billions of dollars.

BP also revealed Tuesday that it made a net profit of $5.5 billion in the third quarter, more than offsetting the $1.34 billion loss reported in the previous three months when the company wrote down the value of some assets. It was also 5 percent higher than last year's equivalent of $5.2 billion.

Most interest came with the news that BP was raising its quarterly dividend 12.5 percent to 9 cents per share. The company's shares were up 5.3 percent to 447.6 pence in late morning trading in London.

"The results were much stronger than we and the market anticipated - almost entirely in refining and marketing where the clean result was $3 billion versus our forecast of $1.8 billion," said Stuart Joyner at Investec Securities.

Chief Executive Bob Dudley said the dividend hike was based partly on BP's deal announced last week to sell its half share in Russian joint venture TNK-BP to Russia's state-controlled rival Rosneft, a deal which will yield $12.3 billion in cash for BP.

Some $11 billion in asset sales in the last quarter and new projects coming onstream also gave the board confidence to raise the dividend, he said.

"We recognize that we have had some very patient shareholders," Dudley said in a conference call with reporters.

BP is selling its 50 percent share in TNK-BP for $17.1 billion cash and a 12.84 percent stake in Rosneft. BP is using $4.8 billion of the cash to buy a further 5.66 percent of Rosneft for $4.8 billion.

Dudley said there had been no discussion with Rosneft about reviving BP's bid to join in exploring for undersea oil in the Arctic. That plan died because of opposition from BP's partners in TNK-BP.

"TNK-BP has been a great investment for BP and its partners but as I have said many times, the partnership seems to have run its course and BP did not want to leave Russia," Dudley said.

Rosneft has said it intends to buy the other half of TNK-BP, which is owned by four Russian tycoons, but Dudley said it was possible that Rosneft would decide not to carry through with that.

BP has faced a difficult few years since the big and costly oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The company booked another $59 million in costs related to the spill in the third quarter, raising the nine-month total to $882 million.

BP said it expects to make the final payment this year into a $20 billion trust fund to compensate losses from the Macondo well blowout, in which 11 people died. Since the disaster in 2010, BP has announced disposals of assets valued at $35 billion toward its goal of $38 billion.

Dudley said BP still hopes to reach a "reasonable" settlement of a suit by the U.S. Department of Justice over the damages created by the spill. He said, however, that the company continues to prepare its defense should the case come to trial, which would be in late February.

Elsewhere, BP said its replacement cost profit, a key industry benchmark, during the period was $4.7 billion, down from $5.3 billion a year earlier. It blamed lower oil prices and production and higher costs. Revenue of $93.1 billion was also down from $97.7 billion a year earlier.

Production of oil and gas, excluding TNK-BP, was down 3 percent compared to a year ago at 2.26 million barrels a day. BP said it expects higher production in the fourth quarter as its maintenance season ends and new projects make a contribution.
