Alternating Renegade Row

Position yourself in the basic push up position and place your hands around kettlebell handles, slightly wider than shoulder width apart
Your feet should be slightly apart, about the width of your hips, with your toes on floor and keep your stomach tight.
Straighten your arms and keep your body raised off the floor. Always maintain a slight bend in the elbows.
With one hand slowly lift the kettlebell in a rowing position towards your chest.
Slowly return to the starting position and repeat with the other hand.
Repeat 10-20 times and do 3-5 sets (beginners do 1-2 sets).
Two Arm Kettlebell Row

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent.
Bend at the hips with your back straight. Hold a kettlebell in each hand with palms facing each other and let your arms hang down.
With both arms, slowly pull both kettlebell?s up to your body and squeezing the shoulder blades together.
Slowly lower back down.
Repeat 10-20 times and do 3-5 sets (beginners do 1-2 sets).
One Arm Kettlebell Row

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent.
Bend at the hips and knees and keep your back straight. Take one hand and place it on something stable that is approximately waist height to support your upper body.
Hold a kettleball in other hand with your palms facing inward and let arm hang straight down.
Keeping your elbows close to your body, pull the kettlebell up to body and squeeze your shoulder blade at top of movement.
Slowly lower back down.
Repeat with the other hand and do 10-20 reps and 3-5 sets (beginners do 1-2 sets).
Low Back Extension

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and keep your legs straight.
Grasp a kettlebell with both your hands and let it hang infront of you (for more weight grasp a kettlebell with each hand).
Slowly bend your back forward, keeping your back straight and your abs tight.
Slowly rise back up.
Repeat doing 10-20 reps and 3-5 sets (beginners do 1-2 sets).

Tigers face Giants' Vogelsong in critical Series game

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit's perceived advantage in pitching evaporated during the first two games of the World Series and now the Tigers find themselves facing the San Francisco Giants' hottest starter in Game Three on Saturday.

The Tigers entered the Fall Classic well-rested and were able to throw their best pitchers at the Giants early in the series and allow for a second start if the series goes long.

However, the Giants pounced on Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the opener and outlasted Doug Fister in Game Two and can take a nearly invincible 3-0 series lead with a win on Saturday.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland was philosophical about his team's chances to stop the bleeding.

"Well, I like to simplify things," he said. "I can simplify this one pretty easy. The way I look at it, we're two games back with five to play. But we're playing the team we need to catch.

"I think that's the best way to approach it."

The Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games in the National League Championship Series and had only one day of rest before the World Series began in San Francisco. Detroit, meanwhile, swept the New York Yankees in four straight in the ALCS and had a week to rest up.

The pitching rotation did not exactly work out for the Tigers, and it could get worse because in Game Three they will face Ryan Vogelsong, who is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three postseason starts.

With the series having shifted to Detroit for Game Three, Vogelsong, 35, did not think the frigid weather forecast for Comerica Park on Saturday would be much of an issue.

"The cold weather, obviously it's something we're going to have to deal with," he said. "But it's the World Series. You can't be worried about how cold it is.

"I threw a game in Chicago last year where it was 34 degrees (one degree Centigrade) and it was raining and sleeting, and I threw the ball pretty well that night.

"If I am thinking about how cold it is, it means I'm not thinking about what I'm doing on the mound."

SILENT BATS

The potent Detroit offense has just 10 hits during the opening two games of the series and Tigers catcher Alex Avila noted that the Giants' pitchers "haven't made many mistakes."

"Hitters hit mistakes, that's the bottom line," he said. "When you have opportunities with the guys on base, you've got to be able to take advantage of them. To this point in two games we haven't. That's really it. There's nothing more to it.

"There's no magical scheme that you can just flick a switch or change something, and all of a sudden you score nine runs."

Detroit will start right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who was 9-13 with a 3.86 earned run average this season having split his time between the Miami Marlins and Tigers, but in the playoffs is 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA.

"We need to forget what happened in San Francisco," he said. "I know we've got the talent. That's why we're here. We've got a pretty good team, so we're going to fight it to the end.

"We've got a long way to go, so we've got to keep working."

Manager's toughest call: sitting a slumping star

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pete Rose sat in the World Series. So did Reggie Jackson, Barry Zito and Paul O'Neill. Tim Lincecum lost his spot in the San Francisco Giants' rotation this October, and Jose Valverde forfeited his role as the Detroit Tigers' closer.

Finessing slumping stars with enormous egos and prodigious paychecks is part of a major league manager's mandate, and sensitive situations can turn radioactive come October.

"It's one of your most difficult things you have to do as a manager, particularly when you're talking to a star player," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, "and you have to tell him that you're going to go another way as far as the postseason."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi set off storm when he parked Alex Rodriguez for three playoff games this October and pinch hit for him in three others.

"Any time I'm in any lineup, I think that lineup is better and has a better chance to win," said the $275 million man, baseball's highest-paid player. "Any time I'm in the box, the game can change, and everyone knows that."

But a string of strikeouts earned A-Rod his own private brig on the bench.

Lincecum, a two-time Cy Young Award winner for the Giants, won the Series opener and the Game 5 clincher against Texas two years ago. Dropped as a Series starter this year following a 10-15 regular season, he came out of the bullpen in Game 1 and retired seven straight batters, striking out five.

"A different vantage, a different kind of feeling," he said of his `pen appearances this October, "a whole different experience for me."

A World Series benching that brought a particularly resentful response came in 1983. Then 42, Rose had started 31 consecutive World Series games before Philadelphia manager Paul Owens banished him against Baltimore ace Jim Palmer in Game 3. Tony Perez, Rose's 41-year-old replacement, went 1 for 4, and the Orioles overcame a two-run deficit for a 3-2 win that gave them a Series lead en route to a five-game victory.

"I'm hurt and embarrassed," said Rose, who went on to become baseball's hits king. "There are 65,000 people in this stadium tonight, and the two most surprised and astounded people are Pete Rose and Tony Perez. I didn't think that's the way baseball should be played."

Yankees manager Joe Torre removed four-time All-Star Chuck Knoblauch for Games 4 and 5 of the 2001 World Series after an 0 for 12 start, put him back in the lineup for a night and then took him out again for Game 7.

"I'm just fiddling with it to see if we can stimulate some offense here," Torre said.

He also sat five-time All-Star Paul O'Neill against Curt Schilling in the opener and O'Neill was joined by two-time All-Star Tino Martinez in the dugout for Game 2 as Torre went with eight right-handed hitters plus Andy Pettitte against Randy Johnson.

Torre's moves didn't work. Johnson pitched a three-hit shutout to give Arizona a 2-0 Series lead. He restored Martinez for Game 6 but not O'Neill, and Arizona won 15-2 to force a Game 7.

"I liked the days when I didn't have to look at the lineup," O'Neill said.

In 1981, Reggie Jackson missed the final game of the AL championship series and the first two games of the World Series because of an injured calf. He said he could play in Game 3, but manager Bob Lemon held him out against Los Angeles Dodgers rookie sensation Fernando Valenzuela.

"The best left-hander in the National League was pitching against us," Lemon said, "and Reggie hasn't been at bat in quite awhile. It wasn't fair to him, and it wasn't fair to us."

New York lost 5-4 that night and the Dodgers won the Series in six games. Jackson, in his final year with the Yankees, returned the following night and went 4 for 12 with an RBI over the rest of the Series.

Zito, a Cy Young Award winner with a $126 million contract, was dropped by Bochy from San Francisco's postseason rosters in 2002.

"The way he handled it was so impressive," Bochy said. "I think he threw a bullpen that day and throughout the postseason he kept himself ready in case something happened. He didn't hang his head and he even threw to hitters. He said, `I'll keep myself ready. If you need me, I'll be ready."'

And the manager maintained Zito's respect.

"He's always communicated," the pitcher said. "Sometimes the truth was not what I wanted to hear, but it was the truth."

Willie Mays, in the last of his 22 seasons, started the 1973 Series opener for the New York Mets and then entered Game 2 as a pinch runner. He fell down on Deron Johnson's fly ball leading off the ninth as Oakland rallied for two runs that sent the game into extra innings, then hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th. After Mays pinch hit in Game 3, manager Yogi Berra didn't use him in the final four games. And Mays didn't cause a fuss.

"Just because it was my last game, it didn't make any difference to me if I played or not," Mays said then.

By then, Mays was 42. Rodriguez, at 37, stills thinks of himself as a power. Girardi's move paid off when Raul Ibanez batted for A-Rod in the ninth inning of Game 3 of this year's division series and hit a tying home run. Ibanez homered again in the 12th to win the game.

"Those were tough moves to make - pinch hitting for a guy that's going to be a Hall of Famer," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "But it certainly turned out to be the right thing to do."

OCD and Homeschooling | Psych Central

After reading many of John Holt?s books in college and subsequently working with him in Boston, I became committed to the homeschooling movement. This was in the mid-?70s, way before homeschooling became an acceptable alternative to traditional schooling.

When my three children were young, we homeschooled off and on throughout the elementary school years. My son Dan, in particular, loved the freedom of being able to explore his interests as he pleased. He continued homeschooling throughout high school, and received his diploma from a nontraditional school that works with homeschoolers. Always bright and self-motivated, he was truly born to homeschool. He has since graduated college.

His diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder didn?t come until after he graduated high school, and while he had known something was wrong for ?a while,? his father and I didn?t have a clue. So the decision to homeschool, on our part, had nothing to do with the fact that Dan has OCD. From Dan?s point of view, it was how he learned best. He did give high school a try for a few months in ninth grade, but decided to leave so he could ?continue his education.? Whether his OCD played a part in that decision or not, I don?t really know. But I do know that Dan genuinely loves learning, and he and homeschooling were a great fit.

Over the years, I?ve noticed, mostly from talking with people and reading blogs, that a considerable number of children with OCD are homeschooling. This is a totally unscientific observation; I don?t have any statistics. But I do have a question: Why? No doubt everyone has their own reasons, but some possible explanations might include:

• OCD often is associated with above-average intelligence, as well as creativity, and these two attributes do not always mesh well with traditional schooling.
• The school is unable or unwilling to meet the child?s special needs (even though they are legally bound to do so).
• The child refuses to attend school. This might be directly related to the OCD (for example, he or she may believe the school is contaminated), or indirectly related (the child is being bullied because of his or her odd behaviors).
• The child is willing to attend school but parents feel it is advantageous (in reference to OCD) to keep the child home.
• The parents or child believe homeschooling is the best way for this particular child to learn (independent of any issues with OCD).

I believe in homeschooling. While I know it?s not for everyone, it can be a rewarding experience for parents and children who undertake it for the right reasons.

But if your child has left school or has never attended solely because he or she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may be a good idea to reevaluate the situation. It?s true that school might be a fervent breeding ground for OCD triggers, but is avoiding it the right thing to do?

To complicate matters more, for those also dealing with social anxiety and perfectionism, school can be torturous. I know it?s easy to say ?avoidance is never the answer,? but when you have a child who is terrified of going to school, what do you do? Sometimes, could it be that avoiding certain situations is the right thing to do?

As with everything related to OCD, there are no easy answers. Parents, therapists, teachers, and students all need to become as educated as possible about the disorder. If it?s decided the child will attend school, the appropriate support network should be put in place. Of course, a support system is also necessary if the child is homeschooling.

Either way, the child must receive proper treatment. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy, the frontline treatment for OCD, is actually based on facing one?s fears, and is therefore the opposite of avoidance. So the actual location of the battleground (school or home) isn?t so important. What matters is that the war against OCD is faced head-on.

Janet Singer?s son Dan suffered from OCD so severe that he could not even eat. After navigating through a disorienting maze of treatments and programs, Dan made a triumphant recovery. Janet has become an advocate for OCD awareness and wants everyone to know that OCD, no matter how severe, is treatable. There is so much hope for those with this disorder.

I Fell In Love On The First Online Date ? LifeBytes?Real Stories

As the social media manager for a worldwide online dating site, relationship blogger and all around wanna-be Carrie Bradshaw type girl, I tell women all the time to avoid falling for a guy on the first date. There is a part of me though that wants to tell them that stranger things have happened, and that falling in love on the first date can happen?because it happened to me.

I was in the midst of an online dating whirlwind. You know, when the stars, sun and moon align and you?re having so much fun emailing and talking to guys online and have dates planned every weekend? Things were clicking, and at one point I was having such a blast that the thought of a long term relationship was the furthest thing from my mind. But of course, isn?t that always what happens right before you fall hard for someone?

The particular guy in question was hard to nail down. He only checked his online dating inbox sporadically and since he took a week to respond to simple ?How was your day?? messages, I wrote him off as either not interested or not interesting. There were too many other guys to distract me. But, somehow we became friends on Facebook and I spent more time than I?d like to admit combing through his profile and liking what I saw. Every time I logged into my online dating account, I?d hope there was a message from this mysterious handsome stranger.

We finally scheduled a date-margaritas and Mexican food at the best place in town. As a seasoned online dater, I went into the whole thing knowing to keep my expectations low. I?d long learned that it?s much better to be pleasantly surprised than to be disappointed. Truth be told, I made plans with another online date for later on that night, which goes to show how I was not expecting to fall head over heels in love.

I?m a writer, I should be able to find a more eloquent way to describe our date other than-It was the best first date ever. It was one of those dates where you almost can?t believe it?s happening to you, and you know that no matter what happens with you and the man sitting across from you that you will never forget this moment. You feel lucky just to have been apart of it.

Of course, an incredible first date doesn?t equal a great relationship. We didn?t go from margaritas and hysterical laughter to living happily ever after. It?s been a winding road. But sometimes, I look over at him and get the same feeling I had when I was sitting across from him in the Mexican restaurant. I can?t help but feel lucky.
