Isn?t it nice when you find out that the girl who teased you in middle school actually just had a crush on you?

Isn?t it even nicer when you meet again years later and fall in love?

The cherry on top is when you marry and create a whole new entity comprised of only the best parts of the two of you.

I am probably naive to compare a very tangible business win to an intangible concept like love, but the 2012 FDDG Sales Kick-Off felt, at the very least, like a great first date.

The truth is ?mergers and acquisitions? can be (and should be) mutually beneficial to all parties involved. Such is the case for us right now as we welcome a new partner to our team.

For the first time since OpenText announced its acquisition of communications powerhouse EasyLink July 7, sales and executive leadership from the two teams came together in Tucson last week to meet face to face and talk about the future of secure information exchange.

One question had the 2012 Sales Kick-Off event buzzing with anticipation: now that we are far and away the world?s leading provider of information exchange solutions, what do we do next?

The overwhelming tone throughout the week in Tucson was one of excitement, collaboration and creativity. It is a relief to finally be on the same team with this fellow market leader. WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney said Tuesday that Poland's economy is a model of small government and free enterprise that other nations should emulate, an unspoken criticism of President Barack Obama's policies in the wake of the worst recession in decades.

Wrapping up an overseas trip, the former Massachusetts governor said that "rather than heeding the false promise" of a government-dominated economy, Poland sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means" after the Communist era.

Shortly before ending his stumble-marred trip, Romney sought to minimize any damage from comments in Israel that sparked strong criticism from Palestinian leaders, saying his words had been mischaracterized.

In an interview with Fox News, he said he "did not speak about the Palestinian culture or the decisions made in their economy" when he told Jewish campaign donors that their own culture is part of the reason the Jewish state is more economically successful than areas where Palestinians live.

Romney also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw before flying home to the United States, and paid tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Poles who died in a World War II ghetto uprising against the Nazis. Both are traditional gestures for dignitaries visiting Poland.

His speech seemed an attempt to link his overseas trip to the campaign at home.

He said that in his talks on Monday, one unnamed Polish leader "shared with me an economic truth that has been lost on much of the world. 'It is simple. You don't borrow what you cannot pay back,'" said Romney, who frequently criticizes Obama at home for the growth of the U.S. debt in the past four years.

"The world should pay close attention to the transformation of Poland's economy," Romney said. "A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad, and an important and growing role on the international stage."

While holding up Poland as an economic example, Romney did not mention that the nation's unemployment is measured at 12.4 percent. Unemployment in the United States is 8.2 percent.

Romney did not mention Obama by name during his speech, but he frequently accuses the president of failing to understand the importance of the private economy and favoring government solutions to the nation's problems.

Romney resumes his campaign at home with appearances Thursday in Colorado.

His aides told reporters that despite any mistakes, the trip had been a success.

Already, they were eager to turn the campaign focus back to the race against Obama.

The campaign issued a statement from its headquarters in Boston noting that the announcement of Romney's selection of a vice presidential running mate is getting closer. It unveiled an app for smartphones that it said would "serve as the campaign's first official distribution channel" for the news.

Controversy accompanied the former Massachusetts governor in Poland as in previous stops in Britain and Israel, and comments he made earlier in the trip drew criticism from China.

Xinhua News Agency said Romney's "hawkish remarks" made in Jerusalem could worsen an already tense Mideast situation, or even re-ignite a war between Palestinians and Israelis.

Earlier this week, he declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel, even though U.S. policy holds that the city's designation is a matter for negotiations between the Jewish state and the Palestinians. He also sparked a charge of racism from Palestinians when he told donors that the strength of Israel's economy was due in part to the country's culture.

At his first stop, in London, he drew criticism from British political leaders when he appeared to question whether the nation was fully prepared for the Olympic Games, now underway.

The Republican presidential contender has been highly critical of China throughout his campaign, promising to challenge Beijing's growing influence in East Asia and get tougher with the communist government on its human rights record.

There was some tension between reporters and Romney aides as the campaign looked to Poland as a final opportunity to project the image of a leader ready to stand on the world's stage.

The two-day trip to Poland was aimed in part at building support among Polish-American and Catholic voters in the United States.

Poles generally have been skeptical of Obama's "reset" with Russia, and Romney has cited Polish concerns in his criticism of Obama. Some in Poland and the neighboring Czech Republic were upset by the Obama administration's decision to revise the Bush-era missile defense plan for Europe, which included sites in both countries.

In his speech, Romney said of Poland: "At every turn in our history, through wars and crises, through every change in the geopolitical map, we have met as friends and allies. That was true in America's Revolutionary War. It was true in the dark days of World War II. And it has been true in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Romney delivered his remarks in a deeply Roman Catholic country that for years has favored Republicans over Democrats. This is partly a legacy of President Ronald Reagan, whose efforts helped bring down communism across Eastern Europe, for which Poles remain grateful.

Poland has been a stalwart U.S. ally and significant contributor to military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Romney met earlier in the day with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. They discussed the longstanding ties between the two nations as well as the conflict in Afghanistan.

"On behalf of our countrymen, I express deep appreciation for your willingness to fight with us, to stand with us, and to be our friends in times of crisis and military conflict," Romney said.

"Poland has excellent ties with the United States, regardless of which American party is in power," Sikorski said. "We remember Ronald Reagan's warm feelings for Poland's Solidarity and also the fact that we joined (NATO) during Bill Clinton's term."

Romney also stopped to view a memorial to Pope John Paul II, who was born in Poland. He then met with President Bronislaw Komorowski.

The candidate ignored shouted questions from reporters about his comments on Israel and the Palestinians. Asked why Romney has taken just three questions from American reporters during the trip, traveling press secretary Rick Gorka said, "Shove it." He later called some journalists to apologize.

Romney's visit, campaign officials said, was at the invitation of Lech Walesa, the Polish labor leader who co-founded the Solidarity movement and served as the country's president during the country's transition out of communism.

Walesa effectively endorsed Romney when they met Monday.

But Solidarity, the organization Walesa helped found more than two decades ago, characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labor rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing the visit and expressed support for American labor organizations.

NEWTON ? Sussex County's use of information and communications research has been ranked first among all counties in the nation its size, according to a voluntary survey released by the National Association of Counties.

Each annual survey shows the direction digital innovation has taken across the country and, according to officials, "2011 left little doubt operational efficiency is guiding decisions in Sussex and county innovation offices everywhere."

Larry E. Naake, the national association's executive director, said the Digital Counties Survey, "identified best practices and innovative uses of innovation crucial with today's constrained budgets to maintaining and even improving service levels."

The county moved to the top of its size classification because of its development of server and desktop virtualization and creation of a private cloud computing model, which can be used by any other municipality in the county.

With the network combining its resources into a pool, available resources can be split into independent networks and each private network can be assigned to a particular government's requirements.

The county's entire network has been replaced with the private cloud allowing the county to share resources, improve research services and reducing the overall cost of the system.

Penn State likely will loan money to pay NCAA fine

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The president of Penn State says the university will probably have to give its athletic department a long-term loan to pay the $60 million fine imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in light of the child sex abuse scandal.

Rodney Erickson told CBS's "Face the Nation" program in a broadcast aired Sunday that a combination of funds including the football program's financial reserves will be used to pay the fine.

Asked whether Penn State had put too much emphasis on football, Erickson called the athletics program "a tremendous success" but said some parts perhaps "became too much areas unto themselves."

Erickson also said people will have to judge for themselves the legacy of longtime coach Joe Paterno, but he said he believes the coach's educational legacy will stand.

Tornado Warning lifted for Mountain View County and Rocky View County

A tornado warning has ended for the counties of Mountainview and Rocky View. Meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm with potential to form a tornado. The storm is about 35 km south of Olds and is moving southeast at 25 kilometers per hour. While the tornado warning has been lifted, the storm still is likely to produce large hail, strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall. All areas affected including Water Valley, Cremona, Carstairs, Stirlingville, Airdrie, Crossfield, Bottrel and Madden are now considered in the severe thunderstorm watch area.

Reds?defeat Rockies for 9th straight win

DENVER (AP) - A show of power from his teammates helped Johnny Cueto get through a rough start.

Cueto shook off his early struggles to pitch effectively for six innings, Ryan Ludwick hit two of the Reds' five home runs, and Cincinnati won its season-high ninth straight by beating the Colorado Rockies 9-7 Saturday night.

Scott Rolen, Drew Stubbs and rookie Todd Frazier also homered for the NL Central leading Reds, who have gone 13-2 since the All-Star break and hit a high-water mark for the season at 20 games above .500 (60-40).

The winning streak is the longest for the Reds since a 10-game run in 1999.

"It was not an easy night, but I really liked the way they worked today and I love what happened" Cueto said of his offensive support. "They came in and did really well."

Consider it payback for what is shaping up as a standout season for Cueto.

"He can't throw zeroes up every time, even though he is really good," Ludwick said. "If he's not in the Cy Young talk now, there's something wrong. He's tied for the league lead in wins now. He's up there."

Cueto (13-5) allowed 10 hits and five runs, including three in the first inning, and twice had errant pickoff throws but managed to keep the ball in the park at hitter-friendly Coors Field to win his fourth consecutive decision. He struck out three and walked two and worked out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth by inducing Dexter Fowler to ground into a forceout.

With two out and two on in the eighth, reliever Sean Marshall struck out Carlos Gonzalez. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth, stranding two base runners by fanning pinch hitter Andrew Brown for the final out for his 21st save in 25 chances.

"I never feel comfortable in this ball park," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It's a tough park to pitch in, a tough place to manage in."

But there's no arguing with the Reds' recent success.

"We just accept it and keep running with it," Baker said. "You don't think about how you're doing it. You don't think about how long you've been in it, and you don't think about when it's going to stop. You just come out and expect to win every day."

Michael Cuddyer connected for his 15th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh off reliever Jose Arredondo that made it 8-7. Ludwick added another run for the Reds when he led off the eighth with a homer off Matt Belisle, his second of the night for his third multihomer game of the season and 15th of his career.

Rockies pitchers were tagged for a season-high five homers, including three off starter Christian Friedrich (5-8). He went 4 1-3 innings and allowed seven runs overall on six hits.

"It's always something different," Friedrich said. "Tonight, I felt I was lacking control and firing it in the zone for the most part. But I can't just go up there trying to fill up the zone, throwing pitches up in the zone, whether they're strikes. You got to keep the ball down."

The Rockies got out to a 3-0 lead in the first on Gonzalez's two-run double and Todd Helton's sacrifice fly.

Ludwick and Frazier each hit solo shots in the second and Stubbs' third-inning homer evened the score at 3-3.

The Rockies regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Josh Rutledge singled, took second when Cueto threw wildly to first in an attempted pickoff, and moved to third on Gonzalez's single before scoring on Cuddyer's double-play grounder.

Frazier singled to start Cincinnati's four-run fifth. Ryan Hanigan walked and Cueto advanced them with a sacrifice before Zack Cozart's single tied it again. Stubbs put the Reds back on top with a single to left that chased Friedrich. Josh Roenicke relieved, and Brandon Phillips greeted him with a two-run double to the center field wall.

After Fowler scored on a fielder's choice by Gonzalez that pulled the Rockies to 7-5, Rolen led off the sixth with his fifth home run of the season.

Military riders mount up for charity

A barrage of motorcycle riders roared into Thrifty Foods in Parksville on Saturday to enjoy a free lunch while raising money for charity.

The group was part of the Military Police National Motorcycle Relay Ride and were on a local leg of the journey across Canada, from Comox to Victoria.

Thrifty Foods sponsors the group?s lunch every year.

The two charities benefiting from the ride are the Military Police Fund for Blind Children and the Children?s Wish Foundation of Canada.

Leader of the ride and Petty Officer Second Class George Robinson said the group is made up of a mix of civilians and both retired and active military personnel.

The ride takes place throughout July and August, with each region doing their own leg of the ride.

Robinson said personally he loves riding a motorcycle and feels it?s important to raise money for children in need.

?There are a lot of children in need who don?t have a voice or the ability to raise the money we can raise,? Robinson said.

Last year Robinson said the Ride raised $35,000 and this year they hope to raise $100,000 across Canada.

If you?re going to spend money on your home, make sure you invest in its infrastructure before picking out wall paper patterns. There?s no point spending time and money on the cosmetic appearance of your house if the basics aren?t right.

What home improvement projects sell houses?

Remember that gadgets quickly go out-of-date. A new boiler, on the other hand, is a better investment and a far more desirable feature for buyers. They can easily add gadgets, but sorting out plumbing can be expensive and messy and can easily put buyers off. It?s important to get the basics right, and these start with:

The roof:?an expensive job and less satisfying than internal projects, but small running repairs will always save money in the long run. Jobs such as removing moss ? which can clog gutters/ down pipes, and cause freeze and thaw damage ? are best carried out during the summer months. Surveyors are very picky nowadays and looking for reasons to mark-down the value of a property, often worried about over-valuing a property for mortgage purposes. Don?t give them an excuse to reduce their valuation of your property.

Heating:?a new central heating system will pay for itself. Fitting it is disruptive, which is why it is best done before you begin on any superficial home improvements. A new system will cost between ?1000 and ?3000 but could add up to ?5000 in value to your home.

If your boiler is old replace it or mend it. When buyers see an old boiler in disrepair they instantly question the quality of the plumbing. A new boiler won?t necessarily?add value to your property, but like many of these things, in a buyers market you need to do things not just to add value to your property, but to make it more salable.

Electrics:if they?aren?t up to scratch, have them mended or re-wire the property. Doing this before you re-paint will save you a lot of money. Not?getting them fixed could put buyers and, or, their surveyors off -?re-wiring and re-decorating is a major job and a major expense. Many buyers are looking for a property that either doesn?t require any work or some where that they can put their stamp on with simple decorations, whereas properties in need of disruptive renovations put many buyers off.

Damp and mould:?treat the cause and you won?t have to keep spending on fixing appearances. Again,this is something a surveyor is likely to spot.

Once the basics have been covered what projects add wow factor?

Big features tempt buyers, but bear in mind that they are luxuries and you need to be able to justify having them. Ask yourself, will they make your space better? Once you?ve got the basics right here are some you might want to consider:

Skylights:?light not only sells houses, it makes them more enjoyable to live in. Installing a skylight in the kitchen or above a dining table can make a huge difference to a room. Skylights don?t just mean small rectangular Velux windows. I am considering a large window that runs across the whole?length?of our upstairs corridor ? light will flood in, making the space look bigger. It?s not a cheap option, it will cost from about ?3,000, but it will make a feature of what otherwise might not be a very interesting space.

Remember that before installing a skylight or making any changes to the exterior view of your house, you?ll need to check with your local planning office that the plans are acceptable.

Sliding doors:?I always mention the flow of a house: doors opening out from the main living space into a well designed garden wouldn?t go a miss in any house. There are so many options with glass nowadays, you can even replace a whole wall with it. The finished result will transform your home and how you live in it, but replacing bricks with glass is expensive and disruptive. It?s not a project for the faint-hearted, but the result will speak for itself.

Long doors:?a trick of the trade and one that I have done in my own home. We all look for big rooms and high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling doors are a great trick to to create this effect. This is a look that works well in modern and period properties. In a modern house if you paint the doors the same colour as the walls you will create the illusion of space, while in a period property good quality wooden doors can add a sense of grandeur.
