Over the weekend, I traded Times Square for Harvard Square and headed north to Boston for the fourth annual Healthy Living Summit, a conference for bloggers interested in fitness, food, health and wellness. This was my second year at the Healthy Living Summit?I attended last year for my personal healthy living blog, Finish Your Broccoli?so it was nice to see some familiar faces and meet several new bloggers who share my interests in living a healthy and balanced life. I heard from bloggers from all walks of life?nutritionists, personal trainers, five-time marathoners, first-time 5K-ers, vegans, Paleo eaters, flexitarians, yogis, eating disorder survivors, college students, moms, athletes, 50-pound weight loss success stories?you name it.
The conference was packed with educational sessions on how to utilize new social media tools, building relationships with like-minded brands (like Pure Matters!) and even tips on how to host and manage virtual fitness or healthy eating challenges. And since this was a healthy living conference, fun workouts and balanced meals were plentiful. Reebok hosted a CrossFit intro class and Wild Harvest sponsored an organic breakfast buffet.
Here are three takeaways from the conference that stuck with me:
We spend just one hour a day eating on average?for all of our meals.

A balanced lunch served at the Healthy Living Summit.
That?s not a lot of time dedicated to making healthy choices. While most of us struggle with the constant work/life/family balance, this statistic implies that what we eat?what should be considered our fuel for the day?is not a priority. Start making small choices to take back your meals. Layer your ingredients to pack a flavorful punch without added fat and calories. If the thought of cooking dinner every weeknight after a full day overwhelms you, keep a few healthy one-pot recipes on hand that serve several people and allow for versatility with ingredients. I love this healthy four-cheese penne pasta bake from Food Network?s Ellie Krieger that I always serve with a simple side of greens. It?s high in protein and fiber, it lasts for days and you can easily add in roasted veggies or lean meats for variety.
Don?t underestimate the power of a 5-minute workout.

This weekend, I got to experience my first taste of CrossFit, the increasingly popular strength and conditioning fitness concept that?s meant to be scalable and accessible for people at all levels of fitness. Reebok was one of the main sponsors of the conference and offered attendees an exclusive intro to CrossFit class led by Jared Davis, a coach at Reebok CrossFit One in Boston. We did a WOD, or ?workout of the day? (CrossFit has its own language!), which consisted of AMRAP (?as many reps as possible?) in five straight minutes of 7 air squats and 15 jumps. Sounds like a piece of cake, right? That?s what I thought too. Not! My quads are still sore! I was sweating bullets by the end of the five minutes. This is just a testament to the fact that you don?t need to be in a gym for two hours every day to get in a good workout. A little bit each day makes all the difference. Search on YouTube for WODs that you can do at home that require little to no equipment!
Meet other people who share your interests and passions.

Last year I registered for my first blog conference knowing absolutely no one but armed with my laptop and a desire to learn and connect with like-minded people. I left with a stash of business cards and a network of new friends and passionate bloggers from my area (and around the country) who shared my interests in healthy living. Since then, I?ve participated in local blogger meet-ups in New York that have only widened my network and allowed me to experience fun and active opportunities in the city. But you don?t need a blog to meet others who share your interests to get fit and stay healthy. Meetup.com is a great resource for finding local face-to-face groups dedicated to everything from running to cooking to meditation to parenting. And if you don?t find a meetup in your area for what you?re interested in, start your own! Social media makes it infinitely easier to find events and groups in your area that interest you.
