BEIJING ? At least 17 preschoolers and two adults were killed Wednesday when their overcrowded minibus crashed with a truck in China's Gansu province, an official and state media reported.
The bus, designed to normally carry nine people, slammed into the truck at 9:40 a.m. (0140 GMT) in Qingyang city when the children were on their way to school, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It did not immediately give other details.
A local government official, who like many Chinese would give only his surname Gao, said there were also injured children, but he declined to say how many.
"Most of the victims were kindergarten kids. Some of the seriously wounded were sent to a hospital in Qingyang city. We are doing all we can to reassure the parents," Gao said.
Accidents are common in China because of overcrowded and poorly maintained vehicles and poor driving habits.
